Ukrainian Ambassador to lead the Famine 1848 Walk in Ballingarry on Saturday, July 30
The Ukrainian Ambassador to Ireland, Ms Larysa Gerasko, will lead this year’s annual Famine 1848 Walk in Ballingarry in South Tipperary on Saturday, 30 July, at 3pm. Welcoming the visit of the Ambassador as Walk Leader, the historian Dr Thomas McGrath on behalf of the Ballingarry 1848 Society stated: ‘The Walk this year is an opportunity for everyone to come out and express our solidarity with the Ukrainian Ambassador and Ukrainian attendees on the terrible suffering they have endured since the Russian invasion of their country on 24 February’.

The Famine 1848 Walk takes place, as usual, from the Young Ireland 1848 and National Flag monument in the village of The Commons to the national heritage monument, museum and visitor attraction, Famine Warhouse 1848, scene of the Rising and an important site in the European history of the 1848 Revolutions. The Walk covers a mile and a half of gently ascending ground and usually takes about forty-five minutes to reach the house. From the field in front of the house there are scenic and extensive views at 1,100 feet across south Leinster. The Ambassador will deliver the Walk Leader’s speech in English and Ukrainian once walkers reach the house. Walkers are then free to complete the circuit, if they wish, and return to the starting point in The Commons by the Upper Road.

Big Picture - ICA Group / Council for The Blind

See how many faces you can recognise in this group photograph of an Irish Countrywomen's Association outing or possibly a Council for The Blind. The photograph was supplied some years ago by Mick Phelan, who was married to Maura O'Keeffe, Kiltinan. Mick had a box of old photographs from his mother-in-law, Dolly O'Keeffe, who is fondly remembered locally for her tremendous work with the Council for the Blind and the local ICA. Any information about this group, the event and names of those in photograph would be greatly appreciated.

You can zoom in closer to see more detail by clicking the photograph to zoom-in and double-clicking the photograph to zoom-out. If you can help with further information please let us know. Your comments, names or corrections are always welcome to: fethardnews@gmail.com

Our first comment comes from John Lee who informs us, "That, from the front - the lady at the (right-hand end) of the second row is: Miss Ciss O'Donnell. Ciss O'Donnell was a National School Teacher and an older sister of Dolly O'Keeffe (the Barracks, Kiltinan).

The ‘Grey Ghost’ Centenary Festival in Moyglass weekending Saturday, July 30 & Sunday, July 31.
The Grey Ghost was a Lancia armoured car that ran on rail tracks and was used by the Free State Army to patrol the railway lines to prevent disruption to services. It was nicknamed ‘The Grey Ghost’, as it was painted grey and ran on a petrol engine, which was very silent in comparison to the regular steam engines.
