Now that the hunting season has started again it is a good time to reflect on a most successful fundraiser that took place last January in Ballylusky. The beneficiaries were the Quigley family of Ballingarry whose daughter Bridget was recuperating in Australia at the time from a very serious illness. Jimmy and Breda's daughter have now arrived home to Ireland and continues to make progress in her recovery.
The fundraiser took the form of a cross-country ride which covered a 12 miles natural bank course. Thomas Kearney and Charles Blackmore led the committee that organised the event. There was a wonderful atmosphere on the day with a tremendous turnout of supporters, not alone those participating in the ride but from all local communities including many neighbours and friends of the Quigley family, many of whom travelled distances to be present on the day.
Over 170 mounted followers took to the saddle to tackle some of the renowned Tipperary Banks that the organisers had in store. Refreshments were served at the halfway mark, to provide some energy and offer sustenance to those who had taken a tumble or two. There was a mini-track for the younger riders so that everyone was involved.
The field were welcomed home by a warm round of applause on their return to the cross at 3.30pm. Comments afterwards confirmed that they really enjoyed a good challenging course where everyone got around safely. Afterwards, once the horses were put away there was a wide selection of refreshments provided for all present. The winning tickets for the raffle were drawn and a number of items were auctioned to add to the fundraising effort. The sociable atmosphere of the day continued and was very much enjoyed by all present.
The Tipperary foxhounds and the Quigley family would like to thank, in particular, all the landowners who facilitated the ride and also everyone who helped out in any way to make the day possible. The White Heather Harriers hunted the Ballylusky area on the day and to support the fundraiser very generously donated the cap to the fund .
A total of €15,000 was raised and this was presented to Jimmy Quigley by Tim Hyde MFH at a function in the Archway bar Drangan last February.
We would like to take this opportunity to wish Bridget a speedy return to good health.

A reminder to take note of the phone number to CALL (not text) in case you need it in a hurry: (052) 6177640.
Fethard Community Text Alert Scheme was officially launched on Tuesday last, November 10, by Chief Superintendent Catherine Kehoe, before a packed hall at Fethard Tirry Community Centre. This launch completes the parish commitment to implementing ‘Text Alert’ as a means of combating crime in our community and to complement the Killusty Text Alert scheme already launched on September 5, 2014.
Chief Superintendent Kehoe, speaking at the launch, complimented the Community Council on their initiation of the scheme, and went on praise Muintir na Tire and their partnership with An Garda Síochána, that has helped to connect communities by sharing information in a safe environment. Communities are now sending out a clear message that they will no longer tolerate anti-social behaviour, burglaries, theft, drugs or fear related crime.
Chief Superintendent Kehoe went on to explain the importance that text alert schemes play in reducing crime. This district has the third highest amount of text alerts sent in the country and the scheme is actively encouraged in all local communities. Theft of farm machinery in the district is down by 11% with a detection rate of 26% compared to the regional detection rate of 19%; criminal damage in the district is down 14% with a detection rate of 37% compared to the regional detection rate of 27%. She thanked the people for their co-operation with the Gardaí and for their enthusiasm and engagement with the project.
Photographed at the Official Launch of Fethard Community Text Alert were L to R: Willie Quigley, Conor McGuire (Coolmore), Superintendent William Leahy, and Cllr. John Fahey.
Superintendent William Leahy, encouraged members of the community to keep a watchful eye for anything unusual and to report any activity by ringing (not text) the Gardaí phone number (052) 6177640, saying there is no such thing as a silly call to the Gardaí, let them decide what action to take and if a text alert is appropriate they will compose and send it. Superintendent Leahy also reminded people to be careful what information they give out about their neighbours to strangers or callers, in particular those inquiring about where someone lives, or are they at home? etc. He also stressed, don’t ever be afraid to ask for ID.
Photographed at the Official Launch of Fethard Community Text Alert were L to R: Michael Mallon, Donncha Doyle, Louise Coen, Kevin Ryan and Joe Lee.
Mr James O’Neill, Community Alert Development Officer with Muintir na Tire, then spoke and thanked all involved and in particular the local Gardaí district for their pro-active work in setting up Community Text Alert Schemes.
Photographed at the Official Launch of Fethard Community Text Alert were L to R: Tony McGarry, Annette Quigley, Eamon Kennedy, Joan O'Donohoe and Marie Murphy.
The official launch was followed by a question and answer session taken by the above speakers and Sgt Kieran O’Regan, Community Liaison Officer, and Garda Denis O’Brien who were also present.
Fethard & Killusty Community Council chairman, Brian Sheehy, then invited all present for refreshments in the community hall.
