Youth Film 'One by One' Premier

On Thursday night, August 25, a large group of young local budding 'film stars', friends, parents, youth leaders were joined by Cora Horgan, CEO, Tipperary Regional Youth Services, for the launch of their recent film, 'One by One', at Fethard Youth Centre.
The film, directed by Will Nugent, was a collaboration between Fethard Youth Club and TRYS (Tipperary Regional Youth Service) who invited local youth interested in film making to take part in the project over a six-week period.

The theme for the film evolved from the creative minds of the cast who sought to express many of the issues facing teenagers in modern day Ireland. Project leader, Will Nugent, did a terrific job in guiding the energetic crew through all the various stages of film making, beginning with 'storyboarding' – where the script is developed through brainstorming and research. The complete process, from start to finish, will be an invaluable experience in planning and completing a project, whether it be film making or something else.

The evening opened with a short introduction by Will Nugent who expressed his thanks to Fethard Youth Club and to Maura Carey, Tipperary Regional Youth Service, for their help and support in facilitating the project. Will then went on to thank the cast members for their absolute dedication and enthusiasm which extended way above the norm. As a prelude to the premier, Will's assistant Tim Vos, showed a short film by Ardfinnan youth, entitled 'The Village Fillum Ting!'
Will Nugent then introduced the 28 minute premier of, 'One by One, to loud applause, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all present. The short film will now be entered in the relevant Youth Film Festivals later this year. The cast: Will Nugent (Director),

Following the premier showing, teas, coffees and delightful refreshments were served by members and leaders of Fethard Youth Centre. Our thanks to Will Nugent for his film making expertise and talent in working with young people, Tipperary Regional Youth Service for supporting the project and reception, Fethard & Killusty Community Council and Fethard Youth Centre for the facilities, the cast for their commitment and dedication, and last but not least, Shannon Dorney and friends who also provided finger foods for the reception.
Annual Harvest Fete at Clonacody
Clonacody House welcomes the autumn with its first Annual Harvest Fete on Sunday, September 11.
Local artisans, chefs, and vendors will showcase their wares at this beautiful country house, which also offers luxurious accommodation in a bucolic setting. In addition, a treasure hunt has been organised for the children, along with face painting, pony and trap rides, and the always welcome bouncy castle.
Banna Chluain Meala, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary, will be on hand to provide the music. It promises to be a perfect afternoon outing for the whole family. Local artisans, including, Dóirín Saurus of Crampscastle Pottery and Marie Crean Basketing Weaving will be on hand to demonstrate their craft and answer your questions, and local chef, Barbara Russell will host a work shop on home cooking. Vendor Marie Moclair will be selling her chutneys, along with Katie's Cookies, and intricate jewellery from the developing world will be on sale, with some of the proceeds going back to the country of origin.

Five generations

Barbara Jones sent us this photograph of her 'five-generation' family living over in Sussex, UK. L to R: Neil (Erin's dad), David (her son), Sally (her granddaughter), Erin born 16th July 2011 on Sally's lap (her great granddaughter), Barbara Jones (great grandmother) her husband Chris Jones (great grandfather), her mother Margaret Holdsworth (great-great grandmother and daughter of Catherine Cummins).
Barbara Jones, whose grandmother was Catherine Cummins, born at Monroe, Fethard in 1891, now has five generations alive as her descendants, now living in Sussex, UK.
Barbara also has her first book 'Under The July Sun' published which is based on a family from Fethard. The book is now also available as an e-book at Amazon, Apple and other bookstores.

Pop Up Café opening extended

Fethard's pilot Pop-Up Cafe based in the Youth Centre has extended its opening trial period to Saturday, September 10. This will help allow the group monitor the café's potential during school hours.
The 'Pop Up Café' is an initiative spearheaded by the Business and Tourism Group in Fethard, serving as a tourist information location where visitors to the town, as well as locals, can find out more about the rich history of Fethard and learn about the local crafts people and businesses in the town.
The overall aim of the cafe is to ascertain the potential for a more permanent tourist information destination in the town and contribute to a more rounded tourism product for Fethard. The results of the eight-week project will be vitally important in ascertaining the next phase of the development of Fethard's tourism product.
The Café is run solely by volunteers. The limited menu includes teas, coffees, scones and cakes served from 10am-5.30pm Tuesday to Sunday.
Killusty Soccer Club golf classic
Killusty Soccer Club will hold a golf classic on Saturday, September 24, at Slievenamon Golf Club. This will be a fourball scramble and the cost per team is €80. Good results at Scoil Ruain

There were scenes of delight in Scoil Ruain as students opened their Leaving Certificate results. The results were excellent this year with the number of students who achieved over 500 points exceeding the national average. Schofield family information
Turlough Johnston sent us this request for information on the Schofield family.
I wonder if you could help me trace some family connections?
My great great grandfather John Sullivan married Margaret Schofield in Fethard, Co. Tipperary on March 30, 1818. John farmed in Grangebarry / Cattaganstown in Killenaule. One of their children, William, baptised on February 23, 1832, had a godmother (sponsor) called Johanna Schofield. One of their grandchildren, John, baptised on February 14, 1871, had a godfather called John Schofield.
This would suggest that there was a lot of contact between the Sullivans and the Schofields. I wonder if there are any relatives left in Fethard? I would be most grateful for any information that might assist me in finding out more about the Schofields?

Class of 76 Reunion
The Class of 1976 will hold a reunion this year on Saturday, September 17, at 8.30pm in the back room of McCarthys Hotel, Fethard. A large turnout is expected and most of the class that we have details for have now been contacted. If you were in that class of 1976 please come along and bring any relevant photographs or memorabilia.
We can recall that 1976 was an unusually dry summer and a very busy year for the local fire brigade who were called to 30 fires all of which we dealt with successfully. The Fethard Fire Brigade crew in 1976 were: John Whyte (Station Officer), Michael Ryan, Frank Coffey, Austin O'Flynn, Sean Ward, Laurence Kenny, Alfie Brett, Percy O'Flynn, Tony Hanrahan and Johnny Murphy.

Holy Trinity National School
Holy Trinity National School will reopen on Thursday, September 1, at 9.30am. The staff are looking forward to meeting all pupils in their new uniforms and to welcoming their new entrants.
New junior infants will finish school at 12 noon for the first two weeks; senior infants as 2.10pm; and first to sixth classes finish at 3.10pm

It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?"
