Students go 'Stone Mad'

Students from the Patrician Presentation Secondary School, Fethard, attended a stone carving workshop, run by Philip Quinn at his 'Stone Mad' studio in Holycross near Thurles last Friday. Killenaule man, Philip, brought students through the stone carving process in various stone such as local blue limestone, granite and sandstone and each student came away with their own unique piece based on their own design.
'Stone Mad' studio offers weekend, week-long and evening workshops for individuals or groups in a relaxed, country setting. More information on Philip's workshops can be got at www.stonemad.ie

Dance in Aid of Hospice
A dance in aid of South Tipperary Hospice will be held in Fethard Ballroom on Saturday, May 28, from 9pm. Your support would be much appreciated for this worthy cause. Admission is €10.
Loudest Whisper
The well-known and popular Fermoy based band, Loudest Whisper, returns to Butler's Bar, Fethard this Friday night, May 20. The band received a tremendous reception on their last to Fethard and should not be missed.
Fethard Tidy Towns
Following the annual general meeting of Fethard Tidy Towns the following officers were elected: Canon Tom Breen (president); Joe Keane (chairman); Thelma Griffith (secretary); Brian Sheehy (treasurer), committee members include Tom Tobin, Patrick Burke, Jimmy O'Shea, Eamon Kennedy, Mandy Quigley, Miceál McCormack, Davy Morrissey, Mary O'Connor, Gabrielle Schofield, Fionuala O'Sullivan, Bill and Liz Kennedy, Vincent Doocey, Rory Walsh and Johnny Burke.
South Tipperary County Council employees removing litter bins on Main Street as one of the security measures in place in preparation for the Queen's visit to Coolmore on Friday 20th May.
The Tidy Towns committee would like to thank Jimmy Horan and his team of County Council staff for their on-going help in the town. The committee are actively preparing for this years entry in the National Tidy Towns competition seven days every week and would appreciate more volunteers to come along and help.
Locals are asked to be aware that due to security measures for the visit of the Queen of England, all bins and bottle banks have been removed temporarily and will be replaced in due course. So please bring your litter home for this period. Contact any of the committee members for details.
Bingo and Quiz Night
Lonergan's Bar will hold a Bingo and Quiz Night in aid of Fethard Juvenile GAA Club on this coming Saturday, May 21. The event promises to be a great night's entertainment and for a great cause. Mark it in your diary!
Fethard Ladies Football Club

On Sunday, May 8, history was made for the Fethard club in Cahir when three of our U14 girls, Ciara Tillyer, Jessie McCarthy and Katie Butler were part of the Tipperary U14 squad that defeated Waterford in the Munster U14 ladies football final. This was a fantastic achievement for the girls and the club is very proud of them and it was great to see three Munster medals brought back to the parish. Congratulations also to to Tom McCarthy who is a selector with the county team. We wish the girls and Tom the best of luck as the continue their quest for All Ireland honours when they take on Cavan in the All Ireland semi-final weekending May 28/29 with venue to be decided.
Last Saturday saw the Tipp U14 girls head to Kinnegad, Co. Westmeath, for the All Ireland inter-county blitz, with Tipp entering two teams. Annie Prout was called up to Tipp's second team and along with Ciara Tillyer gave some great displays and were unlucky not to make the final. Tipp's first team, which included Jessie McCarthy, reached the final and were crowned All Ireland inter-county blitz champions after beating Leitrim. Well done to all involved.
Junior Ladies
Our junior ladies had a great win last Sunday evening in Ballylooby when they defeated Boherlahan on the scoreline, Fethard 2-19, Boherlahan 4-3, in the semi-final of the Junior B league. The girls now face either Templemore/Mullinahone in the final and we wish them the best of luck as they try to win back-to-back league titles in different grades having won the C league in 2010.
U16s
Our U16 girls played two matches last week. First up last Monday saw the girls defeat Mullinahone in Mullinahone on the scoreline 5-12 to 1-3 and then, last Friday night, they faced Aherlow in Fethard and after a tough test they came out victorious on the scoreline, Fethard 5-12, Aherlow 3-5. This now gives the girls four wins out of four and with a break now likely for exams they can look forward to a county semi-final. Well done to the girls and Tom, Kieran and Maureen.
U12s
Our u12s had a good start to the championship last week when they defeated St. Patricks 5-4 to 2-4 in Cloneen. The girls are due to play Gortnahoe next week.
U8s/U10
This age group return to training on this Saturday at 11am in GAA field following the recent break for First Holy Communion. All new girls welcome.

Australian Travel Writer Visits Fethard

Australian travel writer Tim Richards spent a day in the Fethard area recently and naturally his main interest was in the Moyglass family background of Ned Kelly, the famous – or infamous –Australian outlaw of the late 1800s.
The visit was organised by Fáilte Ireland as part of their push to increase tourist visitors to Ireland in 2011 and following years. The Fethard Historical Society were asked if they could provide a guide and Terry Cunningham, PRO of the Society, offered to show Mr Richards around last Friday.
There is much in the Fethard area that is of interest to international visitors, especially Australians with whom we have huge cultural links. It is stated that up to a third of Australians have Irish ancestry, be they emigrants from Ireland or 'convicts' like John Kelly from Clonbrogan who stole two pigs in Ballysheehan and got seven years Transportation in 1840 to Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania) for his exploits.
Tim Richards was taken around Kelly Country - including Ballysheehan near Cashel – and like many Australians he was surprized to see a church on the rock, as many Australians expect to see a 'big rock' like their own Ayers Rock.
The travel writer also saw the 800 year old walled town, with its churches and abbeys, the surrounding horse country with its castles and great houses, all of which have historic and modern connections that a typical Australian would understand and enjoy.
Most of Tim Richards articles appear in the The AGE newspaper in Melbourne, which is the quality broadsheet newspaper in the state of Victoria and whose readers would be the demographic profile that would be most likely to travel to Europe. Fáilte Ireland hope, of course, that they can direct some of them Ireland's way and the Ned Kelly Story and the horse and ethnic connections are a great draw in this regard.

Fethard U16s are the 'B' South Football Champions, bringing home the 'Danagher Shield' for the second time in a row, on Sunday, May 15. With lots of Fethard supporters cheering our lads on, they played a great game, amidst what some might say quiet controversial playing tactics on the opponents part at times. But Fethard played through and won by a well earned score-line of Fethard 4-17, Killenaule 2-7.
With a very small panel both in age and numbers our lads have earned their worthy place in the county semi-final which will be coming up shortly.

Premier 12s also played a great game on Sunday evening in Ballyporeen. Again with small numbers, we were able to overcome our opponents, Ballyporeen, with an end score of, Fethard 3-5, Ballyporeen 1-6. We are now set for our semi-final against Ardfinnan on Tuesday, May 17, which, if won, will send our team to Semple Stadium on Saturday, May 21, for the county finals day.
Cúl Camp Registration will take place on Saturday, May 28, at 11am for 1 hour. The cost is €55 for one child, €45 for second child, €35 for third and subsequent children from same family.
St Rita's Camogie Club
The very best of luck to St Rita's Camogie Club who will play in the county league final this Sunday, May 22, at 2pm in The Ragg. This is the second year running that the ladies have reached the league final and let's hope this year they can return with some silverware.

TY Students visit Newgrange

TY students from Patrician Presentation Secondary School, Fethard, travelled with teachers to visit Ireland's most famous monument – passage-grave or passage-tomb at Newgrange, Co. Meath, constructed around 3200BC. This makes it more than 600 years older than the Giza Pyramids in Egypt, and 1,000 years more ancient than Stonehenge.
Students are pictured in front of one of the more famous carved stones 'The Entrance Stone' with its enigmatic spiral and lozenge shapes. This large stone lies in front of the doorway that leads to the 19 meter long passageway. Over the entrance one can see the 'Roofbox', the space through which the light, on December 21 every year, shines through to the basin stone at the end of the passage.

Fethard business meeting on Tuesday next
A meeting to start a Fethard Business and Tourism Group will be held in the Tirry Community Centre on next Tuesday, May 24, at 8.30pm. Mr Anthony Fitzgerald, Business Development Executive, South Tipperary County Development Board, will be in attendance and the meeting will be chaired by Ms Catherine Corcoran, Tipperary Institute.
This meeting, facilitated by Fethard & Killusty Community Council, will hopefully result in the formation of an independent group who will promote business and tourism in Fethard and the surrounding district. In this time of recession it is even more important that we work together to promote commerce and employment using all resources available in our community.

The minibus was donated to Fethard Scouts by sponsor, Tony Burgess Site-Works, and has proved in recent times to be a great asset to the Fethard Scout Group who would like very much to thank Tony for his generosity.
Community Games
Well done to our ten competitors who took part in the County Finals of the Community Games Swimming last weekend. Congratulations to David Morgan, Grangebeg who won a gold medal in the U16 freestyle event and the Stokes sisters, Caroline and Zoe, from Ballybough, Caroline won a silver medal and Zoe won bronze. Oliver Pierson, Coolmore, also won a bronze medal.

Other competitors who all did very well were: Abigail Maher, Tinakelly; Conor Pierson, Oliver's twin brother from Coolmore; Cory Carroll from Kilknockin View; Hannah Dolan, Coolmore; Aisling Gorey, Monroe; and Thomas Morgan, Grangebeg.
David Morgan will represent County Tipperary at the HSE Community Games National Finals in Athlone on the weekend of August 12 to 14.
Niamh O'Sullivan, daughter of Johnny and Claire, won a silver medal for Powerstown-Lisronagh area beaten by the narrowest of margins by her club mate Beth Fitzpatrick. Niamh has strong Fethard connections being a granddaughter of Marie O'Sullivan, Main Street.
We would like to send best wishes to Kilsheelan U10 GAA team who defeated Fethard and subsequently went on to beat Drangan-Cloneen and Ballingarry, who had previously beaten Cashel and Clerihan, to win the south final. They will now play in the county final in Semple Stadium on June 6. So Fethard you can hold your heads high, you were drawn against a good one in the early stages.
HSE Community games PR Seminar took place in Athlone last week, the agenda included a section on the art of photography where our own Miceál McCormack featured in one of the slides and a good role model he made too!

A very successful table quiz, raffle and auction was held in Gaule's Pub, Burke Street, on Friday, May 13, in aid of the 'Tara Projects' – touching and rebuilding Africa. Tara (Trade Alternative Reform Action) is a fair trade program for community development and business. TARA members are involved in production and marketing (local and export) of handcrafts with the aim to improve the livelihood and education of the producers. The organisers would like to thank everyone who helped and took part in the quiz.
