Fethard & Killusty Community Council introduce ‘Transition Towns’
The next meeting of Fethard & Killusty Community Council will take place in the Tirry Community Centre on Tuesday night 10th February at 8.30pm.
At 9.30pm guest speaker Matthew Mather will give a short presentation on ‘An Introduction to Transition Towns’ which will be followed by a short question and answer discussion on how Fethard could become involved in ‘Transition Towns’. Fethard & Killusty Community Council are also currently working in co-operation with the pupils of Nano Nagle Primary School in helping to make Fethard a ‘Fairtrade Town’.
Anyone interested in either of the above topics are welcome to come along to the presentation in the Tirry Centre at 9.30pm on Tuesday night 10th February.

Book Fair this Sunday 8th February
Tipperariana Book Fair takes place in Fethard Ballroom on this coming Sunday, 8th February, between 2 and 6pm. Over 30 book dealers will attend from all over Ireland with stalls offering books of Tipperary interest and lots more. The authors of Tipperary books published in 2008 are also invited to attend and will be available to sign and sell their publications. Admission to the fair is €2.
As always, donations of books are greatly appreciated for selling on the Historical Society’s own stand and thus generating funds for the society’s work throughout the year. Any member of the committee will arrange collection or people can take the books to the Ballroom on Saturday 7th February between 2pm and 5pm or even on Sunday morning before 12 noon if possible. Intimate Sessions in McCarthy’s
Following the success of the Jim Rooney, Mick Daly and Arty McGlynn session in McCarthy’s, it has been decided to make the ‘Intimate Session’ a regular event. Mick Hanly turned up for the first session to greet his old friend Jim Rooney, who, as a producer, sent Mick’s song ‘Past the Point of Rescue’ to the top of the American charts for artist Hal Ketchum. He sat in and played in the session, and afterwards declared that he would like to play a session of his own. Mick will play McCarthy’s on Friday 13th February. Tickets are €15 available from McCarthy’s.

Meanwhile, the Pheasant Pluckers will hold the fort every Friday night in the back room of the bar in their session which has been going on for an estimated 25 years.
Tipperary Hunt Pony Club 50th Anniversary Reunion Party

The Tipperary Hunt Pony Club celebrated its 50 years of existence with a wonderful party in Slievenamon Golf Club on Saturday 24th January 2009. The evening kicked off to a great start with a drinks reception and an exhibition of photographs, newspaper reports, old movies and memorabilia of the past 50 years, including the minutes of the first meeting held. Over 275 people from all eras of the Pony Club came to join the party and were welcomed by the club president Mrs Diana Watson. The excitement was palpable as old connections were made and friendships renewed, with elements of surprise and delight as some people had not met for twenty-five years! Anne Croome-Carroll, MC for the evening, talked about the history of the club and how Pony Club camp had started in the Green in Fethard and was now held at Clonmel racecourse.

Rosemary Gaffney and John Watson both spoke about their experiences in the Pony Club and the many International riders that Tipperary Hunt Pony Club has produced from top Jockeys to Olympic eventers and show jumpers. They also recalled some of the many fun times especially the importance of water to Pony Club!
A presentation was made to the outgoing district commissioner Clare Corballis who spoke about her wonderful experience at the helm for the last five years, and paid tribute to the fantastic Pony Club members who were a pleasure to be with. She wished the team of new DCs Fiona O’Connor, Josephine O’Hagan, Pat Walsh and Anne Croome-Carroll well.

The evening finished late after a lively disco. It was a fantastic evening with so many wonderful memories, stories exchanged and happy reunions. One story told on the evening relates how a past Pony Club member called McCarthys Hotel in Fethard requesting accommodation for the party, to be told that they have not had rooms on offer since the 1960s!
Tipperary Hunt Pony Club has had a long successful 50 years and with current membership over 200 looks to have a very bright future.

Fethard & District Juvenile Rugby Club
Fethard & District Juvenile Rugby Club unfortunately we had no matches last weekend due to the weather conditions. Training continues on Friday evening (weather permitting) at 6.45pm to 8pm for the Under 8s, 10s and 12s. The girls and Under 14s, 16s and 18s train from 8pm. New members are welcome.
Please note that on Sunday 8th February we are planning to play Thurles and Cashel at home starting at 10.30am. Then the following weekend we are planning the re-arranged blitz at home against Waterford City and Roscrea. If you are not receiving the weekly texts regarding Training and Matches please text your child’s name and age group i.e. U8 to 087 744 7691.

From the 3rd November 2008 all phone numbers in the 052 area have had two extra digits 61 added to their old number. The old numbers and new number will work together for a period of six months after which your old number will cease. If your old number begins with 3, as most Fethard numbers do, you will have to add 61 to the start, e.g. Fethard Community Office’s phone number 31000 will now change to 6131000.

Died Recently
The death has occurred on 28th January at Woodside Nursing Home Killusty of Mr Michael Kennedy, Silverfort Cross, Fethard. Interment took place in Moyglass.

Benefit Night
A benefit night in aid of ‘Missing in Ireland Support Service’ will be held in the Castle Inn on this Friday night 6th February at 9.30pm. Music will be supplied by The Sheehans with lots of cash and spot prizes given out. Tickets are €5 and your support would be very much appreciated.
Fethard Ladies Football Club
The annual general meeting of Fethard Ladies Football Club will be held in the near future. Proposed date of Friday 20th February will be confirmed as soon as possible. We are anxious to make people aware that we intend to participate in the following age groups this year U-12, U-14, U-16 and Junior. Training will commence as soon as possible, weather permitting. We hope to hold an early blitz for the U-10 age group. It was wonderful to see two members of the Fethard Club, Barbara Ryan and Sinead Delahunty, on the County Team that won All Ireland medals last year. This was a great achievement. There is a lot of talent out there and we would be delighted to have a good turnout at our AGM to show your support for this up and coming sport.

Co Tipperary Community Games
Community Games will have a stall at the Book Fair in the Ballroom this coming Sunday, 8th February. Anybody who have not yet got copies of our book ‘History of the Games in County Tipperary’ will have a chance to pick one up at the very reasonable price of €10. There are articles of photos of several local individuals and teams in this publication.
Fethard and Killusty area have U-15 boys Indoor Soccer team entered for the County Finals which will take place in Monroe Sports Complex, Lisronagh on this Saturday, 7th February. The Area also have an U-16 Boys Volleyball Team entered who will be competing later in the year.
The County Finals of Art and Model Making will take place in Gortnahoe Community Hall this year in April. Closing date for Area Finals will be early March so all budding artists should now start practicing. County Finals of the U-14 Juvenile Quiz will take place in the Presentation Secondary School, Thurles on March 6th. Entries are for a panel of 6, team of 4 and 2 subs. Entry fee is €6 which can be paid on the night. This is always a good evenings entertainment.
The County Finals of Gymnastics will take place in Tipperary Town on May Bank Holiday Monday. We hope to see our gymnasts in action there again.

We wish all our teams the very best of luck in 2009. The County Senior Football and Minor Leagues start this weekend away to Rockwell Rovers in the Senior League at 2.30pm while also away to Knockmealdown Gaels in the Minor Football at 12 noon. We also expect to be out in Under-21 B Football on Saturday 14th February.
Our Lotto Jackpot was not won and we had no match three winners. The €30 tickets drawn went to Rita Doyle (Woodvale Walk, Fethard), Michael Clarke (c/o Merrys Clonmel), Catherine Ryan (c/o Merrys Clonmel), Dorothy Keane (c/o Merrys Clonmel) and James Wade (Thomastown Golden). Fethard ICA Meeting
Fethard ICA will hold their next meeting on Tuesday 10th February at 8pm as usual. Our speaker for the night will be Shay Hurley of the Clonmel Workman's Club. Shay has extensive knowledge of the river Suir and also has considerable experience in boat building. This promises to be a most interesting talk. The Yellow Group are in charge of catering on the night.

Finding on Knockuragh Hill from Drangan on Monday, Tipperary Foxhounds hunted to the Crohane Road which they crossed. Turning left-handed they ran down to Mr. Pat Hackett’s and back to the hill. Doing a full right-handed circle the fox again crossed the Crohane Road near the village. Re-crossing the road he headed back to Knockuragh. As the field would be entering the hill for the third time, hounds were stopped on the road and this fox was left. Moving on to Priestown they did not find until down to Mr Phelan’s at Cappanagrane. Hunting into the Glen, where there was a very poor scent, they stuck well on their fox which was very slow to leave. Getting him away eventually over the road past the bridge he crossed the Dublin Road. Running to the end of Glenmuckaduibhe they ran right-handed to the big covert at Tullowcussane. Hounds hunted very well here in covert. Charlie, however, just could not leave and eventually got to ground. Finding again in the glen near Ballyvadlea Bridge they ran back once again to O’Donovan’s and to ground.
Thick mist and strong wind coupled with poor visibility did not help hunting by any means from Dualla on Thursday. From Looby’s Hill they hunted one of a leash down to Ballyowen. From Georgesland a fox did a circle around the Cashel Harriers Kennels and ran to the Motorway where he was left. Drawing on, in ever worsening conditions, they found at Mr. Ritchie Delaney’s, Mocklershill. Hunting strongly, through Meldrum to the Dualla / Cashel Road, Charlie turned left-handed here to the top of the hill. Surprisingly, turning again into the teeth of a gale-force wind they hunted him too, back to Mayfield where they lost him near Brickíndonn.
High winds and heavy rain once more played spoilsport with the Tipperary Foxhounds from Lismolin on Saturday. Following a short hunt from the Glen they caught him on top of the Lismolin stone quarry. Saturday concluded with a nice circle from Kyle Wood.
With the White Heathers
Amy Pollard rounding up the White Heathers at a recent meet in Saucestown.
Much better weather favoured the Ballyluskey White Heather Harriers from their Coolbawn Cross meet on Sunday last. Finding at the adjacent Fort they crossed the Killenaule Road. Running towards the New Line, then left-handed, they crossed the Coolbawn Cross / Moyglass Road, down to the Bohermacogue Road they put to ground by the end of the Airport. Drawing back they did not find again until drawing the beech grove on the Blackmore Farm boundary. This fox crossed the Killenaule Road to the huge plantation at Mortlestown where he was left. Moving back down to Aiden Kennedy’s they found an outlier in a hedgerow. Hunting through Aiden Kennedy’s and Patrick’s to the Waterfall they checked briefly. Doing a U-turn here Charlie ran back to Bawnbrack where he crossed the St. Johnstown Road at the stables. Through Norton’s Gorse he ran towards Ballyluskey to the Fort on the late Willie McCormack’s. Swinging right-handed short of the Fort they hunted here strongly back towards Kilkennybeg and to ground in the Fort on Lyons Hill. This was a cracking run, hounds hunting unaided throughout without a check except for the brief stop at the Waterfall. The Ballyluskey White Heater Harriers meet on Sunday next, 8th February, at Thorny Bridge.
€70,000 Grant funding for Fethard Youth Centre
Deputy Mattie McGrath has today Monday, February 2nd welcomed the announcement by Mr. John Curran, Minister of State with special responsibility for Community Affairs and the National Drugs Strategy at the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, that he has approved €70,000 of grant aid to the Fethard & Killusty Muintir Council Ltd., under the Programmes of Grants for Community and Voluntary Organisations.
The grant funding of €60,000 is for the repair, refurbishment and renovation of the former school hall into a dedicated youth centre. A further €10,000 has been approved for the purchase of equipment for the centre.
“I am delighted that this funding has been approved and I know it will go along way towards this very valuable project in the Fethard/ Killusty Area. This is the first round of funding under the current Programmes in 2009 and it demonstrates the Government’s commitment to tackling disadvantage in our society by providing support for important projects being undertaking at a local level by community and voluntary organisations” said Deputy Mc Grath.
Deputy McGrath congratulated the Fethard & Killusty Muintir Council and all the staff at the Fr. Tirry Community Centre for all their hard work in the Community on an ongoing basis and wishes this project the very best of luck.
