Minister for Horse Racing visits Fethard A former teacher, solicitor and rugby player (he played for the Auckland Maori team), Mr Peters turned to politics and has become one of the most powerful politicians in New Zealand as the party he leads, New Zealand First, hold the balance of power in the country’s Government. He came to Fethard to visit Coolmore Stud and Ballydoyle and stopped into McCarthy’s Hotel where he met and entertained many New Zealand ex pats and their partners that live in the Fethard area. May Procession All-Ireland Volleyball Champions Great credit for the schools outstanding success in this event must also go to the dedication of the two team coaches, Bernie O’Connor and Denis Burke. The bus, on arrival back to Fethard on Friday afternoon, was escorted by flag bearing pupils from Main Street to the school grounds, were the team was met and congratulated by the teachers, pupils and parents. Well done to captain Debbie Lawrence, her team, and all concerned! Fethard ICA Guild Hostesses for the Annual General Meeting are the ‘Blue Group’ and the competition theme is, ‘Sprig of Flowering Shrub’. Many of the guild members are now preparing for the Arts, Crafts and Produce Day that will be held in Brú Ború on 11th May. The theme is ‘Birthday Celebrations’ as South Tipp Federation is 65 years old this year. At our April meeting votes of sympathy were passed to Margaret Phelan on the death of her nephew, Eamonn Ely, Littleton; to Jenny Kiely, Ballingeary Guild, on the tragic loss of her son Liam; and to Pat Looby, Kerry Street, on the death of her father. May all four rest in peace. Youth Soccer Knitting enthusiasts! Blue is the Colour! Time changes for some, not others! No Thoughtless Parking Please Fethard Thursday Market A variety of stallholders turned up on the Square on Thursday morning last and the market created a great buzz for the two hours it was in operation. The vendors were extremely pleased with the results. One lady who had a high class home-made confectionary stall said, her takings for the two hours trading in Fethard on Thursday morning far exceeded her sales at the established weekly market in a neighbouring town. Local hurley maker, Liam Hayes, was both surprised and delighted with his sale of a dozen hurleys. The Community Council wish to thank sincerely the stallholders who came and set up shop and also the general public for their support. Thursday’s market prevented a weekly market day for Fethard Town, granted to Town Councils by the English Crown hundreds of years ago, being lost forever. Following the success of last Thursday’s market and favourable comments and suggestions received, the Community Council are now considering making the Thursday Market Day at least a monthly venture in the near future. In connection with the market day, the market may have, in its early days, been held in and adjoining a Tholsel house in the centre of the Square. The market was subsequently transferred to the Town Hall where the weekly Country Market is now held every Friday morning. Some senior citizens still refer to the Town Hall as the Market House, the name by which it was commonly known up to forty years ago. The Well Golf Society Nearest the pin: A word of thanks to Tipperary Golf Club especially the club house staff who looked after us so well, also Tipperary Hon. Secretary, Joe Considine, for all his help. Our next outing is on Sunday 21st May, at Callan Golf Club. Tee-off is 3pm. Fethard Juvenile GAA Club Our under-14s played their second match in the championship and were narrowly beaten by Moyle Rovers. This is a very young team with most of them underage next year. They are showing great promise for the future and their next game is against Commercials on this Thursday 4th May, away. Bus leaves GAA field at 6.15pm. The under-16 footballers have now qualified for the south semifinal; venue and time have not been decided at time of going to print. Great credit must go to these young lads and their trainers for playing some great football and showing fantastic determination against all odds, having been dogged by injury from the start. It would be brilliant to see a large number present to cheer them on. Membership fees are now overdue. All those who have not yet paid please do so as soon as possible. Under-14 and under-12 hurling has now resumed training on Wednesdays at 6.15pm in GAA field. All juveniles eligible are asked to attend. Fethard GAA Club Best of luck to all members in the County Board this Friday 5th May and thank you for your contributions to help keep the club up and running, The Lotto Jackpot €2,200 was not won. The numbers drawn were: 9, 11, 18 and 28. We had no match three winner. The €50 Lucky Dip went to Chrissie O’Meara and the following drawn tickets won €30: Tony Maher (56 Woodvale Walk), Bee Gould (Claremore), Megan Coen (The Green), Marion O’Gorman (Thurles), and Pat Bradshaw (The Green). Tickets kindly supplied by Allied Irish Banks Ltd. Our sympathy at this time is with the family of Donal Kealy, Ballingarry, on their recent bereavement. Go ndeana Dia trocaire orthu. Fethard & Killusty Community Lotto The three €50 Lucky Dip winners were: Booking Fee Query You return to bed, glad that you have made your purchase. On the way, you slip on a cd and fall asleep to the sound of the artist you are now going to see . . . “The times they are a changing!” A few days later, the ticket arrives. It cost €70 including booking fee. The following day, the visa bill arrives. Cost of ticket is €75.95. Incensed, you call the ticket vendor. Eventually a human voice replies. He can’t explain the charge. He has to get someone to call you back. “It ain’t me babe!” says the man who calls back, “It’s the policy of the company to charge extra for phone bookings.” So that’s it. You pay to sit by the toilet door to see the artist, you pay a booking fee, and then you pay a second booking fee for using the phone. Isn’t modern technology great. Of course, I won’t name the artist in question, a man once known for protesting against the system. Instead I’ll hold my own little protest. I won’t go to the gig. “I ain’t goin’ to work on Maggie’s farm no more!” Fethard and Killusty Community Games Area Athletics Change of Date Qualifying races are from under-8, 10, 12, 14 and 16.
