Fethard Juvenile GAA
As the year draws to an end it is time to reflect back on 2007 and the great work and effort put into all grades by both the players and selectors. Many thanks to the selectors for their time and the hours of enjoyment we received while watching our players compete in the fine manner they did. Also thanks to the parents who gave up their Saturdays to help with the under-6s 8s and 10s. You should be proud of the great displays they put in when asked. Their spirit is what keeps us going!

A big thanks to all involved in the Summer Camp which was run a little differently this year and was a great success. To the teams — our under 12 footballers went out in the semi final stages to a very good Ardfinnan team that went on to win both south and county titles. The highlight of the year was our under-14s winning the south hurling final against St Mary’s to then been beaten by county champions Loughmore. Losing marginally in the south football final to again county champions, Commercials, the team then capped off the year by winning both the 7-a-side finals. To all involved, keep it up it was a great achievement.

We reached the semifinal stages of the under 16 hurling and on the day luck was not with us, both on and off the field, as we had been badly hit with injury. On a sad note, I pay our respects to families of the friends we lost this year. They have left us with some fond memories and we hope these memories will never be forgotten. I would like to finish by thanking the committee for all the hard work over the year and an extra thanks to Caroline Sheehan our secretary and Ann Fleming our treasurer. I hope I have not forgotten anybody and if I did, I apologise. Looking forward to seeing you all next year and hoping all the work achieved in 2007 will pay greater dividends in 2008. — John Hurley

Hunting News
From their meet at Moyglass on Saturday 24th November, following a short run from the willow beds to ground at Ballyvaden lane entrance, the Tipperary Foxhounds had their best hunt of the season from their next draw at Tynans.

Finding on the plantation, their fox ran at a circle to Skehans and back to covert. Not delaying here this time he ran straight through. Away on the other side he turned right-handed towards Moyglass village. Crossing the road, hounds now hunting well, ran to the last draw on the old railway line to Clonbrogan quarry. Pushing their pilot through here they crossed the road hunting on towards Farranaleen and Fogarty’s where they re-crossed the Clonbrogan road to the Moyglass – Silverfort road, which they crossed at Arbour Hill. Running towards Bufanna they wheeled left towards Beechmount. Right-handed here they pushed on towards Knockforla. Short of here this good fox got to ground near the Silverfort-Ballinure road.

This was a cracking hunt of 45 minutes, each starting a check with at least a two and half mile point and probably three miles as hounds ran.

Heading back by Moyglass school hounds finished a good day with a nice hunt from near the New Line by Knockinglass covert. They crossed the Laffansbridge road to the railway line plantation and back again to where they found and then lost him.

With the White Heathers
The White Heather Harriers did not have the best of luck from their meet at Grove on Sunday last. Foxes proved hard to find. The first from Knockbordan ran almost into Fethard before getting to ground. Hounds did not find again until they reached the back gate on the Killusty road. This fox after a short hunt also got to ground.

The Deerpark proved blank and their next fox ran straight to Grove Wood where little could be done. The Ballyluskey White Heather Harriers will meet at Ballyluskey on Sunday, 2nd December, at 11am; and at Ballinard on Sunday, 9th December.

Fethard GAA Club News
Thanks to everyone who attended the Michael Hogan Commemoration in Grangemockler on last Sunday morning. The Fethard club was one of only six clubs represented on the Tipperary team on Bloody Sunday. Past President Paddy Buggy delivered an excellent oration and in his address gave a brief summary of the actual happenings in Croke Park on that faithful day in November 1920 when the British Forces opened fire on players and spectators at a senior football challenge game between Dublin and Tipperary. The story is relayed of a member of the armed forces on seeing the Scout Butler, the Tipperary goalie from Fethard, lying on the ground, asked, where was his gun? He replied, he had left it in Flanders (France), at the end of the 1914-1918 War. Frank was one of three Fethard players who graced Croke Park on Bloody Sunday, the others being Ned Shea (Capt) and Gus McCarthy.

Fethard Rugby Club News
We travelled to Clanwilliam last Sunday to see our youngsters perform fine rugby skills. We appreciated the warm welcome received and would like to thank Clanwilliam for the soup, sandwiches and light refreshments served at the end of the morning.

Our under-7s & under-8s played two games each against Clanwilliam and Galbally. There was fine tackling skills displayed by the strong Fethard squad and it was great to see newcomers playing alongside seasoned campaigners. We came away with two wins, a draw and one defeat. Both teams played their best ever games this season and were a credit to the club.

Players from both teams were: James O’Connell, Mark Heffernan, Harry Cummins, Connor Vaughan, Patrick Scully, Bailey Grace, William Pratt, Gerard Kavanagh, Peter Wall, Aaron Smullen, Ciaran O’Dwyer, Danny Gleeson, Dale Murphy, Joe Carroll, Joseph O’Connor, Darragh Lynch, Harry Butler, Gavin Ryan, Richard Holohan, Ned Grogan, Jack Ward, Frankie Meagher and Jack Spillane.

The under 9s & 10s played a total of four games throughout the morning against Clanwilliam and Galbally. A fantastic turnout from Fethard provided plenty of rugby, playing Clanwilliam three times, resulting in a win, a draw and a defeat. They then drew three-all against Galbally in what was a good game to watch. Owen Shaw scored his fist try for Fethard. Mark Collins played very well with Michael Gaynor coming back to play a fantastic game following injury. Great play was also seen throughout the matches by Luke Ryan and Jason Ryan with great tackling from Padraig Norton.

The under-11s played their match against Clanwilliam, which was a good game. Cathal Mahoney scored two tries and played well, along with Charlie Carroll’s fine play throughout the match with a try to show, and not forgetting Cathal O’Donnell who had a great match. Unfortunately we lost 4-3 to Clanwilliam but this take nothing from these youngsters who are constantly improving and with plenty of newcomers joining it looks like a bright future for the team.

The under-12s played Galbally in a very close match leaving the spectators delighted with the performance showing real start to finish skill. Both sides defence play was very good including Fethard’s Shane Cleere, Jimmy Feehan, Paul Butler and Robert Horan. In the dieing seconds of the match Shane Cleere went over for the try, which clinched the game for Fethard. We are pleased to see such a great squad of under-12s coming to training on Friday evenings.

Our under 18s travelled to Waterpark and put in another great performance, loosing by the slenderest of margins, in a 23 points to 22 point game. Our feelings are with Shane Kavanagh, who has been consistency itself with his kicking until he missed a simple conversion by his standards to win the game in the last minute. This game, however, was lost in the first 20 minutes when Fethard conceded two early tries to Waterpark.

Their fight-back was very encouraging with Kevin Waltzer running in two tries. William Power also got on the score sheet and Cathal Gorey’s try at the death was just reward for this young man’s fine display. Others prominent on the day for Fethard were Dick Walsh and Darragh Dwyer. This display augers very well for this team’s season ahead.

Next Sunday, 2nd December, Fethard Under 8s, 10s & 12s are away to Kilfeacle at 10.30am. Finally a huge thanks to the Gala Ball Committee who organised a fantastic evening recently in the Minella for the first Fethard & District Juvenile Rugby Club Dinner. All had a great time and the support from parents was wonderful to see. Thank you.
