| Fethard Players ‘Three Angels’
Fethard Players are currently in rehearsal for their forthcoming production of ‘My Three Angels’ a comedy by Albert Husson. The play, produced by Austin O’Flynn, will be staged in the Abymill Theatre from Friday 28th November to Wednesday 3rd December inclusive. The play is set in a tropical French prison colony, Devil’s Island, and tells the story of three convicts and their involvement with a store owner and his family. The action takes place on a Christmas Eve in 1910. The cast includes Ann Connolly, Angela Dillon-Whyte, Niamh Hayes, Marian Gilpin, Jimmy O’Sullivan, Colm McGrath, Joe Hanly, Pat Brophy, Gerry Fogarty and Matt O’Sullivan. Preparing for Christmas
Advent is a time of spiritual preparation to celebrate the real meaning of Christmas.
Put some time aside for prayer and personal reflection during this time by joining in an hour of prayer at the Presentation Convent at 7.30pm on Monday evenings, commencing on 1st December. Encourage your family and friends to come along as well. All are welcome.

Fethard GAA Club News
With the GAA year finished on the field we would like to see a good attendance at our Annual Mass for all deceased members and players on this Friday 21st November in The Church of the Sacred Heart in Killusty at 7.30pm. All are welcome.
We also thank all who subscribed so generously to our GAA Centre Church Gate Collection held last weekend. The funds will go towards repairs and the general upkeep of the Sports Centre.
Our Lotto Jackpot €10,000 was not won. The numbers drawn were 12, 17, 18 and 25. We had one match three winner of €150 to Noel Gleeson (Poulmucka, Cahir). The €50 Lucky Dip was won by Fitzgerald Family (Kiltinan, Fethard).

Christmas Bazaar in aid of Missions
The Presentation Sisters’ Zimbabwe Mission Appeal will hold a Christmas Bazaar at the ICA Hall on Sunday 30th November from 2pm to 6pm. Admission is free and all are invited to come along and maybe find that unusual handmade Christmas present for someone special.

Chemistry Class Trip
On Wednesday 12th November as part of Science Week the sixth year chemistry class visited Merck Sharp & Dohme. Included was a tour of the chemical plant and the water treatment plant and a lot of useful information on careers in science.
Comhairle na nOg
On Thursday, 13th November, the following pupils from the school attended the Annual Comhairle na nOg Day in Ballykisteen: James Cotter, Laura Rice, Owen Healy, Niamh Fanning, Niamh McGrath and Aisling Costin.
Laura Rice, Owen Healy and Niamh Fanning were elected to the Youth Council for the county for the coming year. Comhairle na nOg and Dáil na nOg are recognised as the official structures for participation by children and young people in the development of policies and services

Congratulations to the schools art teacher Ms Patricia Looby on her recent successful Art Exhibition “Field Systems” at David Cunningham Projects Gallery, San Francisco.
Glengarra Woods
On Friday 7th November a group of second year students went on a tour to Glengarra Woods where they spent the day identifying the flora and fauna of the area. The pupils were delighted by the variety of trees in the woodland and the significance of the Millennium Forest. They were accompanied by their teachers, Mrs O’Donnell, Ms Looby and Mr Cummins.
Volleyball
This week our senior boys competed in the All Ireland semifinals at UL against Mercy Collage, Waterford. Our senior girls play next Tuesday in Carlow in the All Ireland quarterfinals. Both teams have acquitted themselves very well to date having lost no game in the competition and have even had challenge matches against adult and university teams — from local teams to Youghal and U.L in which they more than held their own.
We would like to thank Cormac Byrne from UL for his advice and tips at the invited guest coaching sessions given last Wednesday night at the school and both teams for their good attendance.
This week our juniors and cadettes also played challenge matches against Dungarvan at the school in their preparation for upcoming first round games at these levels. Again, our boys and girls lost no set at any level and we look forward to competition beginning on the 27th in Tramore for cadettes and sometime later fro Juniors. We wish all our teams every success and enjoyment over the next few weeks.
Parents Association Table Quiz
The Parents Association of the Secondary School, Fethard, will hold a Table Quiz in the Secondary School Hall on Tuesday, 25th November at 8.30pm. A raffle will be held in conjunction with Table Quiz. Attractive sponsored prizes will be on offer. A good night’s entertainment is promised, refreshments will be served, and an invitation is extended to all.
Hospice Coffee morning
Sincere thanks to all these who held Hospice Coffee Mornings and those who supported them at the following venues: Fethard & District Day Care Centre, Dawn Fresh Foods, Coolmore & Academy House, Boys National School, Girls National School, Patrician Presentation Secondary School & Fethard Bridge Club who held a coffee Day in its Town Hall from 9am to 6pm. The total amount donated was €1,922.38.

Hunting News
Tipperary Foxhounds meet in Mullinahone on Monday 9th November. First drawing at Mr Willie Croke’s they quickly found. They hunted two circles towards the Ballingarry Road and back to the entrance gate where they lost him. Scent was rather patchy and hounds had a similar run on a second fox quickly found. Moving up the Ballingarry Road they found again in the small covert at the Lismolin slip road junction. Hunting up towards Kyle they ran back to Finane Wood. Huge coverts like Finane Wood provide much needed shelter and refuge for all kinds of wild life. They are also very much a home venue for foxes who, like Chelsea, they are very hard to beat. Hounds hunted around the wood for over an hour where there was at least a brace and a half of foxes on foot at one stage. No possible chance of getting one to leave and finally they had to be left.
Dualla on Wednesday was much the same, great hound work in the big plantation. Foxes dodging in and out but no notion of going anywhere. Same applied across Connolly’s Hill and over to Silverfort. The day did conclude however with a flier of two minutes from Walshe’s. From the small glen, hounds ran to Mr Ted Burke’s. Turning left handed they were heading for Kill Hills when Charlie did an about turn. Hounds were fairly flying through the large field on Kill Hills and back to Balloughbe where they crossed the Ballinure Road. Heading towards Burnchurch they swung left-handed to Noan Wood where they lost him.
At Cloneen on Thursday foxes proved very hard to find. The Quarry in the village held. This fox ran towards Milestone, crossed the Killusty Road, left to Kilbury where he got to ground. A fox from Mr. John-Joe White’s provided a nice hunt up through the Dairies and left-handed back to Spike. Unfortunately, that proved the last find of the day. Ballinard Wood, Carroll’s, Mouse Morris’ fort, Byrne’s Rock, all Ballinard, Byrneskill and down to Milestone all failed to hold.
Cashel on Saturday (for Hoare Abbey) provided a welcome change of fortune. A fox left the old railway line before hounds reached it. He ran to the Camas Road where he was headed. Wheeling here hounds hunted strongly back to the old racecourse and back to the road which he crossed, running to Mr Peter Magnier’s Stud where they lost him. Some great circling runs were enjoyed from Brittas, Mrs Taylor’s and O’Connor’s crossing and re-crossing the small road known locally as the Boreen Bocht at least three times. They finished here with a good run deep into Camas Stud on a fox found in a hedge in Mrs. Taylor’s where he had stayed put in spite of all the activity. The day concluded with a hunt from the Black Bridge at Castlelake to the Golden Road, back through Mr Clifton-Browne’s to O’Keeffe’s where they lost him.
This was a hunting day that had everything – glorious weather, fifty mounted followers and a very large number of car and foot followers. The circular hunts enabled the field, of all ages, to keep in touch all day. The foot followers, from various vantage points, were also enabled to witness the hunting first hand. You had good hunting, good houndwork and great cry, what more could one ask. Casualties were very few but Niall Higgins, enjoying his first season, received his hunting baptism on Saturday. Judging by the colour and texture of his breeches the water was applied to the wrong end.

With the White Heathers
From Clonacody on Sunday last Donie first tried Toby Purcell’s. Finding here the fox was slow to brave cover and was caught quickly on top. A further brace of foxes were soon on foot. One of these was hunted across the road to ground in the earth by the pond in Horan’s. Brought back, they picked up the other one which they hunted across the Killerk Road at the old Killerk Creamery. Doing a left-handed circle they re-crossed the road and back to ground in the stone quarry near where they found. In Mr Jack Moclair’s they hunted to the Donoughmore Road which they crossed. Charlie decided to dwell on the small covert on the other side.
Hunting well here hounds soon had their pilot away again towards Killerk Cross. Crossing the road again he ran back down to the Moyle river. Running the bank to near Slievenamon Golf Club he then did a big left-handed circle towards the Jossesstown Road, back down through Ballinlough, onto the fort at Moclair’s where he got to ground. Please note that the meets of the Ballyluskey White Heather Harriers got slightly mixed-up in last weeks notes. The White Heathers will meet next Sunday, 23rd November, at Grove and on Sunday, 30th November at The Rectory, Knockelly Road, Fethard, at 11am.
The Great War
The article “Families of the Great War who paid a dreadful price”, by Kevin Myers in the Irish Independent on 11th November mentioned John and Mary Lonergan, of Fethard, Co. Tipperary. Four of John and Mary’s sons were lost to the Great War – Jerry, on 10th January 1915; his brother, of the same battalion, less than two months later; his third brother, Patrick, also of the Irish Guards, a fortnight after. We have had a few enquiries for information on the Lonergan family. However, very little is known of them. We appealed any such information on this page a few years ago. A nephew of theirs, from Cahir, who has visited their graves in France, made contact. He stated they were born in Fethard and the family moved to Whitelands, between Poulmucka and New Inn, when the boys were very young. Three of the brothers enlisted in Cahir, the fourth probably in England.
Little more is known concerning the Lonergans. As Mr Myers said in his article, “they are gone from history; gone from the great tale of the Irish nation”. At least the Lonergan brothers, with the forty other Fethard men who died, are being remembered nationwide, with the 49,000 Irishmen, on this 90th Anniversary of the ending of the 1914-18 War. Why did they die? Perhaps in his poem, “To My Daughter Betty”, whom he never saw, poet Tom Kettle, summed it up when he wrote, a few days before he was killed,
“Know that we fools, now with the foolish dead,
Died not for Flag, nor King, nor Emperor,
But for a dream, born in a herdsman shed,
And, for the secret scripture of the poor.”
Summer in Winter
The weather forecast from RTE, on Friday last, gave the temperature as 12°- 14°. This equals 54 to 58 Fahrenheit which is unusually mild for this time of year. The mild mid-November spell was referred to by former generations as “St. Martin’s Summer”, which covered one week from November 11th — the Feast of St. Martin — to November 18th.

We had another action packed week-end with all age groups involved.
The under 9s were beaten by a very strong Cashel side who were well organised and completely dominated our lads in the first half, to lead by 6 tries to nil at the break. The Fethard team responded well in the second half with Jack Dolan and James O’Connell running in two great tries. Our defensive game was quite good despite the score line but our attacking will need to improve before this team reaches its full potential.
The under 11s beat Cashel by 4 tries to 2. To beat Cashel at home is a huge task which this young team took to like ducks to water. Fethard attacked in waves, and the running and ball handling was a pleasure to witness. Ben Murray ran in two great tries following some great rucking by Paraic Norton and Damien Heffernan. Darren Prout also crossed the line for a try following some great passing and just when Cashel were beginning to come back into the game Tom Stakelum broke and crossed the line for Fethard's 4th try. Denis Fogarty, Jason Ryan and Paul Moloney also impressed, putting in some awesome tackles.
The under 12s scored huge victory against Cashel on a score line of 6 tries to 2. This was a great team victory with all the rugby skills on display both offensively and defensively. Jack Kennedy was outstanding at scrum half. Shane Cleere in only his second game scored two well-taken tries. Kyle Walsh continues to improve with every outing and scored his first hat-trick of tries. Adam Fitzgerald also scored a good try. Tommy Anglim, Ciaran White and Charlie Carroll also impressed with great running and tackling skills.
The under 16s travelled to Clonmel on Sunday of last week and were unfortunate not to come away with a win. The scoreline was by no means a true reflection the effort the lads put into this game.
Our pack of forwards once again done us proud by putting Clonmel under constant pressure and a number of small handling errors were what kept us out of the game. Colm Shanahan, Sam Manton, Kieran Power and Shane Power were prominent in the key positions
The backs were outstanding but once again a few small errors let them down. Adam O’Donnell, Johnny Lawlor and Andy Walsh put in powerful performances to keep the game alive. All in all it was an improved performance but to get the results needed and to do away with the small errors and improve their attendance at the training sessions. The final score on the day Clonmel 13 - Fethard 7.
Our under 18s lost to Clonmel on a score line of 18 points to 14. Our depleted side put in a very credible performance given that we had no sub after the first five minutes. Clonmel dominated the first half and attacked the Fethard line relentlessly, our lads held out with great defensive work from Robert Ahearne. Ben Walsh found the touch line time and time again with “ROG” accuracy. We lost Cathal Gorey to the bin in the second quarter and despite this major loss our team responded resolutely denying Clonmel the score. The inevitable Clonmel score came in the last minute of the first half to leave the score 5-0 at the break.
We lost our captain Joey Kelly to the bin after three minutes of the start, which allowed Clonmel increase their lead from the resulting penalty. Clonmel also had a converted try during this ten minutes with Fethard defending resolutely when our captain returned for the last quarter, Fethard fought back rucking and mauling their way the length of the field before Nigel O’Connell dived across the line. Ben Walsh converted. Fethard again attacked keeping the ball with the forwards and rushed the length of the field for Joey Kelly to touch down, Ben Walsh converted. This was a tough test and the Fethard lads responded well with good performance from Kevin Hayes at hooker, William Power at scrum half. Cathal Gory, Joe Fogarty and Dick Walsh were also very effective throughout. With a full panel this team can make great progress. Training Friday night at 8pm.

‘Misery’ kicks off this weekend at the Excel
Misery the latest production by the Fionn Mac Cumhaill Players will kick off in The Excel Tipp Town on Friday 21st November. Next then on to Cleeres in Kilkenny on the 22nd and 23rd and The Source in Thurles on Saturday 29th November.
Trevor Somers takes on the role of Paul Sheldon, a romance novelist who crashes in the snow storm in Colorado. He is saved by Annie Wilkes (Anne Williamson) who just happens to be his number one fan and has read all his books. All is well until Paul is well enough to leave and then Annie makes up all sorts of excuses to keep him there. His number one fan takes a turn for the worse and we start to see she is not the angel of mercy we first thought. Based on the novel by Stephen King this is not for the faint of heart.
Trevor Somers who has been a member of The Fionn Mac Cumhaill Players for some years now and is also a member of Clonmel Theatre Guild. He has appeared on TV in dramas such as Fair City, Ceart agus Ceol, Killanaskully and The Apprentice. Anne has also appeared on RTE 1 in Secret Sights and worked with many groups including Clonmel Theatre Guild, Galloglass, Slievenamon Musical Society. She has directed all works by Fionn Mac Cumhaill Players.
Fethard Macra
A very good crowd from South Tipperary attended the Queen of the Land in Tullamore last weekend. Maeve Roche from the Dundrum club was representing South Tipp in this year’s final. Congratulations to Jamie Fox from Slievenamon Macra who won the South Tipp round of the welding final and will go on to represent South Tipp in the national final. Indoor soccer for Fethard Macra continues on Thursday nights in Monroe. Indoor soccer for all clubs continues in Clonmel on Friday evenings.
Slievenamon Macra have organized a table quiz in Josie O’Neill’s bar in Ballyneale for Friday, November 21st. Rathkeevin Macra have organised a new members night for Saturday, November 22nd. The first round of the public speaking competition takes place on 29th November.
