Fethard Youth Centre
A very positive, productive meeting took place at Fethard Youth Centre on Thursday 4th March. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss and plan a number of projects to develop and expand the activities taking place at the Youth Centre. In attendance were current adult volunteers, others who are interested in becoming involved and Cora Horgan, Maura Carey and Christy O’Neill from Tipperary Regional Youth Services (TRYS). It is hoped that a Youth Group and a Youth Club will be established in the near future with other projects being rolled-out later in the year.

The Youth Group will operate separately from the drop-in facility which runs every Friday and Saturday night from 8 to 10pm. It will be run by Christy, a Community Youth Worker with TRYS, and an assistant in addition to two local volunteers and will target approximately fifteen young people who might be interested in being involved. Christy is hoping to undertake some outreach work in an effort to attract members and he will visit Fethard in the coming weeks to meet with young people here. It is envisaged that the Youth Group will run, initially, during the last school term between Easter and the Summer Holidays. Programmes within the Youth Group will be issue based to help raise awareness among members and also to facilitate personal growth for them. The main focus of the Youth Group is that it will be Fun for the members who will have the opportunity to do activities such as Dance Troupe; Youth Work Ireland Games; Film Production and Variety Shows, and a lot more. Further information can be had by contacting Christy on 087 7727111.

Five adult volunteers have shown an interest in establishing a Youth Club. This club will be activity based and will be for young people aged from 10 to 14 years who are in at least Fifth Class in Primary School. Already, a number of parents have shown interest in this proposal by completing questionnaires recently distributed to local schools. Induction Training for interested adult volunteers, conducted by Tipperary Regional Youth Services, will commence on Monday 12th April at 7.30pm in Fethard Youth Centre. Leaders interested in becoming involved just turn up on the night or contact Maura, on 087 2860991 or at trysrow@eircom.net, for further information.

Other projects which are planned for the coming months include multi-media and music programmes and activities for Sixth Class pupils in the wider Fethard area to introduce them to Fethard Youth Centre.

Hunting News
The Ballyluskey White Heather Harriers brought the curtain down on another season with their Lawn Meet at Orchardstown House on Sunday last. A hearty “Go raibh míle maith agaibh” to the Ronan family for their hospitality prior to move-off. A very big crowd turned out but unfortunately hunting was not in keeping with the occasion. Scent was almost non-existant. Hounds did their almighty best under the conditions but hunting a field or two, working the line for a similar distance and opening again was the order of the day. Hounds did not find in Orchardstown, or Carroll’s, or the Ha’penny Bridge covert.

Finding in the gorse patch at Donoughmore they hunted back to the Bridge. They checked here and by the time it was discovered the fox had crossed the road to Orchardstown they could do little more. Crossing the road to the Glen, he ran up to the Clonmel-Cashel Road. The fox turned left here, ran inside the road and left, back to the Glen where he crossed the road from the Ash Grove at the Bridge where they lost him. Drawing up towards Ryan’s they found but this fellow quickly got to ground. From the banks of the Moyle they had a good left-handed circle before marking to ground in the same earth as shortly before. This run concluded the day and the season.

A reminder that The Ballyluskey White Heather Harriers Annual Members and Friends Draw will take place next week. Tickets for the draw are €2 each, or a book of three for €5, are available locally. The White Heathers are confident that the support of supporters, friends and followers of this long established pack will be as good this year, as always.

Well, another season has come and gone. The White Heathers still continue with great local support and long may it continue. Tradition is a wonderful thing and the hunting tradition and support still lives on very strongly in Tipperary. Most extraordinary the amount of people who never actually go out hunting still follow with great interest the fortunes of the Tipps and the White Heathers and indeed hunting in general. Very heartening and encouraging to see so many juvenile and youthful followers out, they are indeed the future of the sport.

A very special “thank-you” to all landowners without whose co-operation the sport could not continue. Remember also, the season may be over but still hounds have to be very well looked after seven days a week throughout the year. Sheer dedication to their sport keeps professional and, even more so, amateur huntspeople up to the task throughout the year. A special “thank-you” to my good assistant who spends at least an hour each week trying to decipher my writing and typing and preparing these notes each week for the Nationalist.

Thanks also to the Nationalist for their co-operation. The interest is indeed a wonderful thing and Joe has had e-mails from New Zealand, America and god knows where else where people follow with interest the hunting scene in Tipperary.

Fethard Community Sportsfield
Development of Fethard Community Sportsfield has increased dramatically in recent times and the committee are currently in the process of availing of the services of a Community Employment Project. The field is in need of a person who would be available for 19.5 hours each week to cut grass, line pitches, clean up litter, clean containers etc., and moving on to maintenance of the clubhouse when the time comes. If there is anybody over 25 years old and in receipt of a Social Welfare Benefit for more than one year who would be interested in this work the committee would be very glad to hear from them. Garda clearance applies to all applicants.

Fethard Rugby Club News
Our U19s had a great run out on Saturday night when Clonmel hosted us for a challenge match. Fethard came out of this keenly contested game with a deserving two point win, on a score line of 12-10. Fethard were first on the scoreboard with a well taken penalty from Ben Walsh. The Fethard line-out and scrum was very effective on the night giving Fethard great attacking opportunities. The defensive play of Fethard was put to the test on numerous occasions holding up the ball three times when Clonmel crossed the line. Adam O'Donnell's tackle count was phenomenal and he constantly disrupted the Clonmel attack. Robert Hall was captain for the night and his quick thinking on a penalty saw him tap and cross for Fethard’s try, Ben converted leaving the score at 10-0. Clonmel attacked on restart and were rewarded with a penalty. Fethard missed a number of try scoring opportunities before Clonmel struck for their try in the dying minutes.
This was a great team performance and Fethard can use this experience as they prepare for Cashel in the first round of the Cup next week. Our good wishes go to the young Clonmel man who suffered a facial injury on the night.

Our U15s travelled to Waterpark for the first of the League playoffs and were beaten by twenty points to ten. The concession of two soft tries by Fethard in the first half was the difference between these two teams. Despite this concession Fethard really got stuck in, playing constructive rugby and constantly attacking the Waterpark line. Jack McCarthy and Tommy Anglim put in some great tackles with Jack winning great turnover ball. Willie Morgan played very well linking up with the backs. Gerard Gorey scored Fethard’s first try after the forwards rucked and mauled the length of the field before releasing Ger. The second try was generated through the backs when David Hayes was held up, Jack McCarthy crashed over from the resulting scrum. This was a game Fethard could have won and we saw fine performances from Tomas McGabhain, Keith Brunnick, Shane Cleere, Tadhg Fogarty and Paul Butler while Joey Purtill was very effective in the lineouts. Fethard play Dungarvan next weekend in the second playoffs and must win to advance.

U17s - played host to Carrick RFC on Sunday morning last week and came away with a well deserved 12 apiece draw. This was a very evenly contested game which could have gone either way, Fethard never once gave up and the backs put up a strong defence that showed the scoreline, the forward pack rucked and malled and Sean White was rewarded with a well deserved try.

It is with great pleasure that we welcome back to the team Colin Meagher and Gavin Delaney, and a special mention must go to our newest up and coming member Cathal Hurley who scored our second try and converted with only 2 league games under his belt well done Cathal. A man of the match performance with some great tackling and line out defence from Thomas Keavney, Frankie O'Donovan was solid at full back with some great tackles being pulled off, great also to see Shane Power back to his full potential, Dylan Fitzgerald and the rest of the team all deserve a pat on the back for the great effort that they put in. It has been really good to see the numbers increase at training on a Friday night and the results are starting to show - well done lads keep up the good work and see you all at training.

On Sunday last, the Under 11s team played two games at home against Carrick-on-Suir and Clanwilliam. Both visiting teams were in fine form, but the Fethard boys won both games, beating Carrick by 4-2 and Clan by 3-2. Two Fethard players in their first season of rugby continued to show great progress since they started: Ross McCormack was powerful in attacking play, while Jack Kealy made several terrific tackles. Ned Grogan and Jack Grace used their strength to great effect, while Mark Heffernan and Joseph O'Connor used their speed to keep Fethard on top. Aaron Smullen, Harry Butler and Patrick Scully were solid in securing possession at the breakdown, while Jack Dolan played superbly in rucks and on the restarts from scrums and line-outs. The first half of the game against Clanwilliam was a joy to watch, and was arguably Fethard's best passage of play all season. Although missed tackles allowed Clanwilliam to get two tries in the second half, this young Fethard team can be very proud of their performance. Well done boys.

Fethard Macra
Fethard Macra na Feirme are staging the one act play “Till We Meet Again” by Colin and Mary Crowther in the Abymill Theatre on Tuesday, March 16th at 8p.m. This play examines the question of what we would we do differently if we had the chance to live life over again? Nearing death, the play's hero, John, revisits himself as a teenager, as a young man starting a career, as a disgruntled middle-aged husband and, in the final moments, as a newborn child and as the old man he'll never be. He is taken on this journey by his guardian angel in the guise of his old Nana. The play offers an insightful yet humorous account of the different paths life can take and of the mistakes we make along the way. It explores what has happened in the past and what might have been and what could have been if life had been lived differently.
Tickets will be available on the door on the night and can also be booked on 097-6882683.
