Fethard Players stage ‘Any Number Can Die’

Fethard Players are currently in rehearsal for a comedy play, ‘Any Number Can Die’ by Fred Carmichael, which will be staged in the Abymill Theatre from 6th to 11th November inclusive.
This hilarious comedy is a take-off of the mystery plays of the late twenties. Four ingenious murders take place on an island mansion as a pair of elderly detectives set to work on their first case. The storm, the unexpected guests, the missing fortune, the inventive mystery, all add to the excitement of a truly fine play. An evening full of laughs and merriment. Box office at O’Flynn’s, Burke Street, (052) 613 1254 or 087 1338961.

Patrician Presentation Awards Day
An Indian summer Friday saw the dawning of a very important day in the Patrician Presentation school year in Fethard — the Annual Awards Day. A flurry of activity from the opening of the school on Friday 16th October to the first class of the day was evident. The students were eagerly anticipating the ceremony due to commence at 11am.

Margaret Brown, President IBOA, special guest speaker and past pupil, photographed with Marian Gilpin, Deputy Principal, at the awards ceremony. Margaret and Marian attended school together in the Presentation Secondary School Fethard.
By 10am, the awards day committee, Mr Prendergast, Mr O’Gorman, assisted by Ms Lysaght, Ms Gilpin, Ms Maher and, of course, Con Sullivan, school caretaker, were putting the finishing touches to the assembly hall and home economics room where refreshments would be served after the ceremony.
By 10.30am many of the guests had arrived, Séan Goan and Marie Ring of ‘Le Chéile’, Bro Matthew of the Patrician Brothers, and past-pupil Margaret Browne, President IBOA, who was guest speaker at the ceremony.
Mass commenced at 11am celebrated by Canon Tom Breen P.P. and Fr. Martin Crean OSA, the newly appointed prior of the Augustinian Abbey.
A selection of students from 3rd, 5th and all of 6th Year comprised the choir, accompanied by Kevin Hickey. Soloists were Kayleigh Morrissey of 5th Year and the trio from 3rd Year, Lucy Butler, Deirdre Dwyer and Mary-Ellen O’Reilly.

Photographed at the exchange of symbols between the trustees of the Patrician Order and new trustees ‘Le Chéile’ are L to R: Mr Ernan Britton (School Principal), Ms Marie Ring (Le Chéile), Mr Sean Goan (Le Chéile), Ms Marie Maher (teacher), Mr Michael Leonard (teacher), Melissa Wallace (student) and Bro. Matthew Hayes (Patrician Brothers).
The ceremony incorporated an exchange of symbols between the trustees of the Patrician Order and ‘Le Chéile’, the new trust board set up by twelve religious congregations who are now trustees of the school. A special anthem ‘New Beginnings’ had been specially composed for the ceremonies throughout the ‘Le Chéile’ schools and this was sung by the choir.
School Principal, Mr Ernan Britton, welcomed all to the occasion and thanked those who had done so much to make the day a special occasion. Canon Breen complimented the students on their attentiveness and the school on its success in every aspect of education throughout the years.

Photographed at awards day were L to R: Paddy Broderick and Fr. Martin Crean OSA.
Margaret Browne, guest speaker, addressed the gathering. A native of Moyglass, Margaret attended school in Fethard from 3rd class in Primary School until her Leaving Certificate year. She spoke on the family tradition and links with the school in Fethard, both the Patrician and the Presentation, and what a positive influence her schooling had on her very successful career in banking. She particularly remembered Mother Alphonsus and Sr. Annunciata, her maths teacher for helping and encouraging her on her way.
Being the IBOA Union’s only second female to hold the position of President, her life is now a very busy one, but still took the time to come to the school and congratulate all those who had won prizes. Margaret was accompanied by her husband Dan Lenihan.
She concluded her speech with the challenging and effective statement regarding the future of all assembled — “You can make a difference, and together we all make a difference.”
Margaret then presented the ‘Student of the Year’ awards to the following pupils: Karen Hayes (1st Year), Deirdre Dwyer (2nd Year), Aisling Dwyer (3rd Year) and Ida Carroll (4th Year).

Fethard connections with American Grand National win
Your Sum Man, a promising horse while in Ireland, won the most prestigious and lucrative national hunt race in America on Saturday 17th October. The seven-year-old won the American Grand National, formerly known as the Breeder’s Cup Chase, with a value of $250,000 on his American debut over fences.
This impressive horse has very strong Fethard connections. He was bred in Fethard by local man Billy Treacy, who also bred the winner’s dam Annie Cares. This mare proved successful on the track, winning several races in the 90s including a bumper, and also winning over hurdles and over fences.
To augment the Fethard connection, Your Sum Man was owned by the local Coolmore partnership, which included Mrs John Magnier and Paul Shanahan, prior to being sold to America during the summer. He was also ridden by JP Magnier on his two successful outings in bumpers in Ireland.
Racquetball Revival
It is great to see the Fethard racquetball alleys back in use again. The renewed drive in getting racquetball back up and running in Fethard is having great success. The Sports Centre is open from 7pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays specifically for racquetball and keys are available at all other times. All are welcome, new and old to the game, be it fun seeking or competition. This is a great source of exercise for the winter available on your doorstep.
It is planned to hold a local competition later this year so lets get up to the alleys Remember the great nights that were had while competing for the Hayes Cup. To get involved just turn up on either Tuesday or Thursday nights. For further information contact Andrew O’Donovan.

Married recently in Cork were William Lee, grandson of Bridie Lee of Loughcopple, and his bride Marie Kinnane.
Fethard and District Rugby Club
Fethard's J3s took on a well-drilled Clonmel second team on Saturday evening last and gave a very good account of themselves. It is great the see the improvement from week to week in these guys who are mostly new to the oval ball game. The game against Clonmel was always going to be a big task for this emerging Fethard rugby team and even when their opponents scored first the Fethard lads raised their game and a great break down the wing by Paul Scully saw Tom Anglim on hand to cross for a try in the corner. Tom Gahan was unlucky with the conversion.
Eoin Doyle was introduced into the Fethard team at this stage and he had some great line breaking runs, ably assisted by Mick Ahearn, Jamie McCormack and Martin Murphy. In the forwards Mush Dwyer, Nigel O'Connell and Joe Kelly were superb. In the second half Ken Brown was introduced and he played very well making hard yards carrying the ball forward.
We play our first league game away this week to Waterpark and full attendance is required at training. We have a number of under-21 friendly games coming up and the under-21 cup starts before Christmas so we have a busy programme before us. Training takes place on Tuesday and Fridays nights at 8pm. New players welcome, enquiries to 086 8388205.
Our under 12s travelled to Nenagh on Sunday and gave a great account of themselves winning both games against Nenagh and Kilfeacle. We played Nenagh first and Fethard took control from the start with Connie Coen, Michael Gaynor and Liam Meagher dominating in the forwards and the much improved Philip Fogarty and Mark Collins also having fine games.
In the second game we played Kilfeacle and this was a very even game with Fethard emerging victorious by 4 tries to 2, our new man from Ballingarry, John Clancy, got his first try for Fethard. Other good performers were Garry Kavanagh, Christian Casey, Mathew Lynch and Gus Browne. Our thanks to Nenagh for their hospitality on the day.
Full planning has now been obtained for the clubhouse development, and building will commence in the coming weeks with the end of March as the target completion date.
