Tragic accident in Galway
Andrew Walsh, FethardThe town of Fethard was stunned on Sunday morning, 4th October, when hearing of the tragic death of 19-year-old pedestrian, Andrew Walsh, Market Hill, who was struck and killed by a car outside Galway city.

Andrew, son of Ann (O'Riordan) and Michael Walsh, was walking on the Moycullen to Barna Road at around 2.45am when the collision occurred. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A 21-year-old man and a male youth have been arrested and are being questioned at Mill Street Garda Station.

Andrew and his older brother Paul were in Galway to attend a 21st birthday party on Saturday night at Barna Golf Club, about five miles west of Galway city.

It is understood that Andrew left the party some time shortly after 2.30am yesterday and was walking along the Barna-Moycullen road near the golf club when he was struck by a vehicle. A car was found abandoned close by the scene.

A taxi driver travelling on the route some time later found Mr Walsh and called emergency services. Andrew was pronounced dead at the scene at about 4.20am.

Funeral arrangements are as follows. Reposing at his family home in Jossestown, on Tuesday 6th October, from 12 noon to 8 pm.
Funeral Mass at Holy Trinity Parish Church Fethard on Wednesday at 11 o clock, followed by burial in Calvary Cemetery.

Fethard Youth Centre would like to thank all the cyclists who turned up for their sponsored cycle last Sunday. The weather favoured the event with over twenty participants taking part on the two-lap journey from Fethard to Coolbawn, on to Moyglass and back to Fethard. We thank Declan Walsh, Sign Design, for supplying the warning signs for the lead and rear vehicles on the day and a special thanks to Matthew Tynan, proprietor of The Village Inn, Moyglass, who laid on refreshments for the cyclists as they past his premises on both laps.

It was great to see young Conor Harrington taking part with his father Liam. Conor was well up for the trip and the long journey didn’t bother him at all, keeping well up to the leading cyclists.
The committee would especially like to thank Paul Shanahan for organising the event and encouraging his fellow cycling friends to participate. Paul is now collecting all the sponsorship cards and members are asked to bring cards and money collected to the Youth Centre on Friday or Saturday night this weekend. And if you haven’t donated yet . . . it’s still not too late!

Indiscriminate dumping at the top of Strylea boreen in Fethard
Indiscriminate dumping at the top of Strylea boreen in Fethard

At a time when Fethard community are trying to get Tidy Towns up and running again it is very disappointing to see someone dump what appears to be a trailer load of rubbish at the top of Strylea. This rubbish even blocks the access from Strylea to Rocklow Road at that junction. Maybe someone can identify where the rubbish originated or know who is responsible for this selfish and thoughtless act and report it to the relevant authority.

Patrician Presentation jottings
With the first month of the new school year drawing to a close, it is time to update our school jottings.

Exam Results
Congratulations to all the Leaving and Junior Certs of 2009 on their excellent results. They were indeed a credit to themselves, their parents and their teachers and we wish them well in the future.

Welcome
A big welcome to our First Years as they embark on their journey through the Secondary School System and to the pupils who have joined us from other schools. Welcome also to Mr Liam O’Brian, Career Guidance Counsellor and Mr Liam O’Neill, Home-School Liaison Officer.

International Students
There is again this year a strong international presence in the school community. Failte to 5th Year students: Hannah Harbich and Tilmann Lange from Berlin, Anne Schlueter from Magdeburg, Germany, Joe Cho from South Korea and Laurane Gouerec from Paris.

Transition Year
Transition Year got off to a lively start on with a climb of Slievenamon, culminating the Induction Day on 7th September. There are many new aspects to the programme this year. The usual one-week blocks of Work Experience have been replaced by a one-day work experience placement per week, and the school would like to thank most sincerely the numerous employers in the area for their continued co-operation with this programme.

Log On, Learn
The Transition Year under the guidance of their teacher, Mr Justin McGree, have already embarked on a training programme in preparation for the Log On, Learn Initiative. This is a simple and user-friendly method devised to engage our older population in computer training, using the principles of the one-to-one method. The program is designed to “buddy up” a participating transition year student tutor with an older person from their local community, so each share their skills.

In eight weekly training sessions (starting in early November), which will take place initially in the school’s computer room, the student tutor shares:
Knowledge of how to use a PC and mouse, basic word processing and Internet confidence to overcome the ‘fear factor’ surrounding new technologies.

The older person shares:
(a) ability to relate and communicate;
(b) Memories of the past;
(c) Life Experience.

If you are over 65 and would like to take part in the ‘Log On, Learn Programme’, we invite you to contact the school at (052) 6131572 for details.

Harvest Festival
This year’s Harvest Festival will take place at 7.30pm on Sunday 4th October at Holy Trinity Church of Ireland. Everyone is welcome to attend this annual service in the historic church on Main Street. Refreshments will be served afterwards.

Interested in Racquetball?
All interested in playing racquetball are asked to attend a meeting on this Friday night, 2nd October, in Fethard Sports Centre at 7.30pm. This a great way to keep fit for the oncoming dark nights. All are welcome and all ages and levels catered for.
