Died Recently Happy Motoring What is the solution, or more correctly, is there one at all? They have tried motorway toll roads, penalty points, car testing, breathalysing, etc all to no avail. The latest we hear is that cars with four or more passengers are to be exempt from stopping at toll booths. This suggestion apparently is an attempt to lessen the number of cars on our roads. The M50, which was to have been the motorists dream, has turned out to be more of a motorists nightmare, almost completely gridlocked at peak traffic times. Now it appears if been gridlocked on our latest motorway is not enough, you also stand a fair chance of being shot! The residential arc spreading out from Dublin gets wider and wider, reaching well into Co. Meath and down to Co. Wexford. Many now who commute up to 60 miles daily each way to Dublin have to leave home as early as 5am to get to work by 8pm or 9pm. Stuck in traffic for up to 4 hours per day and arriving home at 8pm ready to fall into bed after doing a days work, surely can not be called living; and we call this progress. Things, while not as bad down the country, are not so good either. Try and find a bit of parking space, especially at weekends, in any of our major towns and you will see what we mean. With regard to our terrible death toll on the roads, far more people have been killed by the motorcar in the past 100 years than in all the world wide wars combined. The statistics we mentioned at outset state by 2020 over two million people per year will be killed by motorcars world wide, and we worry about Avian Flu, which is almost impossible to catch. The solution to our horrific road accident record in Ireland is simple but impossible. There will have to be some means devised to get into people’s head and change their way of thinking. Most extraordinary that so many motorists who live as best they can by the laws of God and man throw the rule book out the window when they get behind the wheel in a car. They would not dream of eating a bag of crisps two days out of date but would think absolutely nothing of exceeding the speed limit, driving while using their mobile phones, after having one or two over the limit, or showing courtesy to other road users. Why is it impossible to change the way they think? Prominent psychologists say, you can only change how you think yourself, not how people think! We seem to have created in the motor car, a necessity like the mobile phone in modern day living, a monster we can not control, and we have just got to live with it. Happy motoring! Next weeks Jackpot is €3,300 and the Jackpot sellers prize is €330. Raking up the past! Having reached the stage where the wheels are falling off the bike with regard to memory matters of 50 years ago, we stand corrected. Cottage Rake was one of the early successes of the legendary trainer Vincent O'Brien. Cottage Rake captured three consecutive Cheltenham Gold Cups in 1948, 1949 and 1950. He was ridden by Audrey Brabazon in each of his Gold Cup triumphs. Another locally bred winner of the Gold Cup was Kerstin in 1958, the Dawn Run of her day, bred by Mr Con Burke, Watergate, at his Kilmore Farm. The mention of the two great leaps thrown by War of Attrition at the second last and last jumps in Cheltenham has prompted another question, “How much ground does a top class chaser cover while clearing a fence?” During the 1950s period a similar inquiry appeared in the letter pages of the old Sporting Chronicle, now long defunct. The answer given for the longest recorded distance covered by a steeplechaser clearing a jump was 22 feet. This was covered by locally bred Cool Customer, who also finished second to Cottage Rake in the 1949 Gold Cup. Does anyone remember the year or race of this record-breaking jump? It would be most interesting to discover if Cool Customer’s record has ever been equalled in modern times. Over to you Raymond! |
