Kinane Cup Reunion In 1963 Patrician Brothers Secondary School won the Dr. Kinane Cup Munster Colleges championship for the first and only time. This was unique for a school from a predominantly football area. For a school of only 75 pupils it was literally unbelievable. Last Saturday night the bulk of the team plus the team manager and trainer gathered again to visit the school and enjoy that most pleasant of all pastimes, reliving great days and renewing old friendships forged on the field of play. A young Brother from Co. Meath, Brother Paulinus Brennan started the team and the first round in October 1962 was a victory over Mitchelstown CBS. Hopes began to rise with victory over Bandon. The terrible winter of 1962-‘63 intervened with snow on the ground from New Years Day till St. Patrick's Day. Trainer Garda Joe McNamara from Galway moved training indoors and even braved the elements to train in the snow. The semi-final was in Tipperary Town against Adare County Limerick. Adare fielded 3 players who later won senior All Ireland medals with Limerick in 1973. They fell to a barrage of Fethard goals (9 in fact) and we now faced our first ever Munster Final in famed Semple Stadium in Thurles.
The opposition were Doon CBS from Limerick Tipp border. The final went to a replay and the drawn game was an incredible tussle. After fifty two minutes of play the Fethard back line of Goalie Pat Barrett, Joe Morrissey, Austy Woodlock, Pierce Coady (Killenaule), Ger Casey, Dinny Burke and Paul Raleigh (Glengoole) had held the Doon forwards scoreless and a rugged Doon defence had conceded only 3 scores (a goal and two Points). A driving solo from Willie Harrington of 80 yards, a perfect pass to Gerry Leahy in front of the Doon goal and the rocket of a shot that followed should have ended the game. To this day Gerry cannot understand how he missed. Worse was to follow. An injury to the face suffered by Goalie Pat Barrett led to 3 Doon goals in 3 minutes and Fethard were fighting to save a game already won 3 minutes earlier. Davy Fitzgerald moved to midfield and himself and Pa Joe Purcell (Glengoole) drove everything into the Doon goalmouth. Harrington again knifed through the Doon defence and crushed home a goal. With time almost up Willie Frewen came close to equalizing but was wide and with time up Tony Fitzgerald cut a ball back from the end line. Full forward Pierce Ryan (a Mayo native) clashed with the full back and the ball somehow ended up over the bar and the team had escaped. Contrary to local tradition Br. Paulinus had not left Semple Stadium but had miscounted the score and thought that we had lost. The replay was an anti-climax compared to the draw. In the early minutes of the game Philly Byrne (Killusty) pointed from 90 yards out and the Fethard forwards ran riot. If the backs had held the team together in the draw the forwards now went to town and the final tally was a clear 8 point victory 3-7 to 1-5. Contributing heavily to the victory were the displays of Jimmy O'Connor (Kiltinan) and Pat Butler (Garrinch) whose fiery tussle with Doon full back John Kelly - an All Ireland medal winner with Tipperary in 1971 was a highlight of the game.
Last Saturday these former players travelled from Cavan, Wexford, Cork, Kilkenny, Waterford and London (Pat Butler) to meet Bro. Paulinus and Joe MacNamara. Bro. Paulinus is now building schools and health clinics in Kenya and playing a little golf (badly I may say). Joe MacNarnara travelled from his home in Templemore where he is living in retirement. Everybody enjoyed themselves on their journey back to their youth and all wished panel member Mick Ryan (Killusty) the best of luck in the golf classic he is organizing in aid of the Kenya projects. My thanks to all who attended, to Joe Ahearne for hosting the reunion and Fethard GAA Club for their thoughtful presentation to Paulinus. A special word of thanks to Charleville CBS for the loan of the Kinane Cup as they are the current holders. I was lucky to have been Captain of the team and it was the proudest achievement of my life. (Denis Burke) Fethard Players stage ’12 Angry Men’ Fethard Players will stage their production of "12 Angry Men" in the Abymill Theatre from Sunday 12th November to Saturday 18th November, with the exception of Thursday 16th November. Tickets are €12 each with a special priced ‘Family Night’ on Monday. The play starts at 8.15pm and tickets can be booked at O'Flynns Menswear, Fethard. Tel: 052 31254 or 087 1338961. The play, using a mixed cast, is produced by Austin O’Flynn. 12 Angry Men is the gripping, penetrating, and engrossing examination of a diverse group of twelve jurors (mostly middle-aged, white, and generally of middle-class status) who are uncomfortably brought together to deliberate after hearing the 'facts' in a seemingly open-and-shut murder trial case. They retire to a jury room to do their civic duty and serve up a just verdict for the indigent minority defendant (with a criminal record) whose life is in the balance. The film is a powerful indictment, denouncement and expose of the trial by jury system. The frightened, teenaged defendant is on trial, as well as the jury and the American judicial system with its purported sense of infallibility, fairness and lack of bias. One described how the workings of the judicial process can be disastrous: "Life is in their hands death is on their minds! It explodes like 12 sticks of dynamite." A Man of Many Parts Usually around teatime on Saturdays the local insurance man arrived in our house. It was Bill’s last call of the day and he was never in a hurry to leave. His breezy good humour was infectious and it enlivened the household particularly my Grandfather as he reposed in the kitchen armchair. Almost unfailingly in the midst of the recounting of the local news and Bill would have visited innumerable houses the story of ‘the car’ would emerge. “God, Paddy it would be a good night to have your big shiny car instead of my old crock of a bike.” Over fifty years later I can remember the softening smile as my Grandfather listened quietly to the dramatic tale of the Gladiator as its huge silver coloured steel frame trundled down the Fethard road into Clonmel. Unquestionably there would have been great interest in this invention but Bill suggested that nearly half the population of Clonmel were on the Railway Bridge in a frenzy of excitement. ‘It must have been a great feeling at the wheel of that huge big yoke? Where did ya learn to drive anyway? Sure ya were one of the most famous men around then and to think it was the first registered car in Tipperary. HI 1, a part of history’. Grandfather rarely added anything except to clarify that he was the driver and not the owner. It was very clear that he enjoyed the fuss and the attention. It was the highlight of his week. I was entranced by this weekly performance in the kitchen but there was a note of poignancy when my mother told me many years later that the parting handshake between the two men covered the surreptitious passing of a half crown to my Grandfather. Patrick Kenrick the eldest of fourteen children was born and grew up in Fethard. He had an extraordinarily varied life, working as a tailor, house steward, soldier, school attendance officer and small shopkeeper. Another of his talents came to light many years after his death when a large number of photographic glass plated negatives were unearthed in a disused room in the old family home. They were found by Tony Newport and he gave them to his cousin Joe Kenny who is a professional photographer. It was fortunate that Joe had the interest and expertise to take on the processing. Later the processing and developing revealed a very interesting collection of photographs which experts have acknowledged as a remarkable reflection of the social spectrum of the early nineteen hundreds. Their varied natures include the local gentry, the Royal Irish Constabulary and the plain people of South Tipperary. The National Museum and South Tipperary County Museum in Clonmel now hold copies under the title of the Kenrick Collection. Confined to a wheelchair towards the end of his days, in good weather occasionally he sat outside the house in Clonmel and chatted with locals. Apparently he rarely if ever referred to his former exploits. I was too young then to have engaged him in any kind of meaningful dialogue. As a young adult I had a recurring nightmare for a period in which I am told the complete story of his life but forget it all because of my lack of attention. Patrick Kenrick died in 1950 aged 78. One week later I was given his bedroom and I still remember that first night as I lay fearfully in the bed in which he had spent his last night. It was eerie even though I had asked that the light be left on. I slept peacefully no doubt watched over by his benign spirit. (Frank Marshall) Fethard Community Youth Project Ten enthusiastic and energetic young people attended. The session, which lasted an hour and a half, started off with fun ice-breaker games including Human Bingo and an M&M game. These activities encouraged everyone in the group to have fun and get to know one another better. After the games the group held a discussion about the naming of the group they decided that the name would be ‘Walking Woodies’; the ground-rules for the group and the plan for the next few months which may include a day trip along with the painting of a mural on one of the walls of the house, cooking and a lot more games. Suzie O’Shea, FCYP Youth Worker, would like to thank all the young people who got involved, Cora McGarry for assisting with the group, the County Council for allowing the Community House to be used by the Project and everyone in Woodvale Walk for their enthusiasm and guidance regarding the establishment of ‘Walking Woodies’. Everyone who attended really enjoyed the session and all are eagerly awaiting the next one which will take place in the Community House on Thursday 26th October at 4pm. Thereafter the ‘Walking Woodies’ will meet, same time, same place, every Wednesday. The training of Adult Volunteers for the FCYP will commence on Thursday 26th Oct. at 8pm in the Tirry Centre. Prior to the commencement of training a brief information session will be provided for anyone who might like to become involved in the Project and those who were unable to make the previous information night. If you have any further queries do not hesitate to contact Suzie O’Shea at the Tirry Centre or on 086 2485977. Fethard Open Coursing Club The Well Golf Society Fethard & District Rugby Club Cathal Gorey broke their defensive line on a number of occasions and but for the inclement conditions he would have surely scored. Adrian Lawrence continues to impress and his overall play and particularly his commitment and enthusiasm is a pleasure to witness. Others to impress on the night for Fethard were Paddy Teehan, Steven Heelin and Ian Croke. Waterford won by 2 tries to nil, but the coaches were very impressed with this team on their first outing and are convinced that they will improve greatly. They will be a force to be reckoned with at this level. Our under 9’s played a great game against Cashel. They continue to improve with every outing showing great skills in attack and in defence. Players who impressed on the day were Luke Grant, Andrew Phelan, Henry Tobin and Gary Kavanagh. Our under 14 team recorded a great win against Dungarvan on Sunday. They were powerful in the forward with our new hacker for the day, Stephen Tierney being particularly effective and capping off his performance with a fine try. The Hall brothers, Kevin and Robert, had great games with Robert dominating the line-outs for us - what a great prospect this fine young sportsman is. Frankie Donovan continues to impress in the back line, both in defence and attack. It’s early in the season but already this team is showing it has the stuff of champions. Fethard GAA Club News The Senior Relegation game against Killenaule will take place next Monday in Ballingarry at 12noon (Check Sports Section for confirmation). Juvenile GAA Notes With very little break between the games a very tired Fethard side went into the final v Ballylooby. Fethard started great with two quick points from Adam Fitzgerald and Kyle Walsh but we then conceded a goal just on half time. There was worse to come when we let in another goal through no fault of the goalie. With seven minutes remaining and four points down the boys got a second wind. They played their best football of the day scoring 3 goals to win by 4 points when the ref blew the final whistle. The scenes of celebration were great as Fethard had secured their first Football Title this year. What a great way to finish the year when captain Charlie Manton accepted the trophy. Charlie richly deserved to be standing there as he had made some fantastic saves during the day to get us to the final. Our backs on the day were outstanding - Donal Walsh, Eoghan Hurley, Alex O’Donovan, (never give up) Andrew Phelan, Joedy Sheehan, Darragh Bradshaw, Eoin O’Donavan and Jack Ward who was our youngest team member at six. In midfield we had stars in Kyle Walsh, who gave his all on the day, and Tommy Anglim who scored the goal of the Championship. Our forwards, although very young, got the vital scores in all games and were brilliant throughout - Niall Doocey, Adam Fitzgerald, Tom Sheehan, David Morgan, and Matthew (the gooch) Lynch who scored the vital goal in the final, Dean Dorney, Dean Kenny, Liam Quigley and Darragh Lynch. Well done to all involved and to their coach on the day Andy O’Donovan. Medals will be presented later in the year. Due to the ever-increasing expense of running the Juvenile Cub we are running a Race Night which will be held in McCarthys Bar on Saturday 2nd December. All parents are asked to support. Horses are currently on sale from committee members. County Heritage Day Anyone interested in attending this free event is requested to be at Cahir Castle by 9.45am. All are welcome. Recent Deaths The death has occurred in Wolverhampton of Mrs. Mela Roberts (nee Cassells) formerly of Cashel Road, Fethard.
