Young Ireland Movement
Benny Tynan is calling for the reintroduction of the Young Ireland movement in our secondary schools movement to promote Irish people buying Irish goods. If we, as consumers, focus on selecting quality Irish goods at competitive prices we not only help our economy but our neighbours as well. This is a critical issue for all of the people, by supporting Irish goods we help our friends and ultimately ourselves.
The Government cannot promote a buy Irish campaign but we can tap into the patriotism of our school children. Our schools have been very successful in promoting environmental issues such as recycling, we must now tap this fantastic and energetic source which are our future to benefit their parents and in the longer term themselves.
In the 1980s the Young Ireland movement was strong here in South Tipperary and it is time for us to reiterate the importance of buying our goods from Irish people. Every euro spent on Irish goods stays in the country and helps us keep and sustain jobs both locally and nationally. This is one of the single most important actions we can undertake if we are to rebuild our economy and our employment base.  Buying Irish goods supports Irish jobs, our Jobs!

It was with great sadness last week when we heard of the passing away of Tim O’Riordan (Barrack St) at his son Michael’s residence in Templemore on 20th May. Timmy was Honorary Life President of Fethard GAA club for the past few years and had celebrated 50 years of service as committee member. His great love and interest over the years was the Juvenile Club where he took an active part.

Tim was no mean player. He won South Senior football titles with Fethard in 1950, 1954, 1955, and won his County Senior football medal in 1954. He was one of three brothers John and Michael who came to Fethard well over 60 years ago, and was also the last survivor of the three boys who came from Cork (Fermoy) to the Friary town they made there own.  Interment took place in Calvary Cemetery. This Friday night local musicians Laura Rice and Jack O’Sullivan will perform for members of Fethard Youth Café at their youth centre. This is the first ‘live’ music session at the café and hopefully the first of many.

The Youth Café has 52 registered members between the ages of 13 and 18 at the moment and a panel of 16 adult volunteers who cover on a rota basis. We currently open on Friday nights from 7.30pm to 10pm and Saturdays from 3pm to 6pm. This week we open Wednesday night from 7pm to 10pm to watch the Champions League Final on the big screen. On Thursday night we will also open from 7.30pm to 10pm at the request of members who are finishing school for the summer. Friday night we have our 'Live Music' night and on Saturday we open from 3pm to 6pm.

We will shortly be starting a ‘Games Pentathlon’ where members will compete against each other at Table Tennis, Air Hockey, Pool, Wii Tennis and Table Football. Maybe someone will offer to sponsor this competition?

If anyone would like more information on joining the Youth Café or any parents / new volunteers would like to visit the youth centre please contact any of the volunteers or drop in any time we’re open.

A fundraising Golf Classic in aid of Bro Paul Brennan’s special project in Kabongo, Kenya will take place in Abbeyleix Golf Club on 17th June. The entry fee is €25 per player or €100 per team. If anyone would like to play on that day, they can call any of the following numbers for details: Mary Gee (Lady Captain) Tel: 086 8357959; Anne Doherty Tel: 086 838 4132 or Bro James (formerly of Fethard who is now the Vice-President of Abbeyleix G.C.) Tel: 057 8731229; or Club Secretary Tel: 057 8731450. All proceeds will go directly to the project at Kabongo
Bro Paul goes on to explain his current work.
“I was able to drill a borehole so as to get a supply of clean water for the children and people of Kabongo. We went down 170 metres and will have the water flowing in a week or so.

We have identified just over 20 families where the parents are HIV positive and who need a decent supply of some nutritious vegetables to supplement their Antiretroviral drugs. To supply this very much-needed supplement, I have planned to set aside one acre on which we will grow a big supply by means of drip-irrigation. This method is necessary as it didn't rain in Kabongo from late October last to early May. Those affected people will actually manage the project once we set it up and that, hopefully, will be in place before August this year.
To help us help these infected people, we are hoping to have a huge turnout in Abbeyleix on 17th June and please pray we get a dry sunny day. Before I finish, I must take this opportunity to thanks the people of Fethard for their support since we got started in Kabongo back in 2003. God Bless all in Fethard.”

Questions for Election Candidates
At the last meeting of Fethard & Killusty Community Council held on Tuesday 19th May, the following questions were submitted to the Local Election Candidates at the South Tipperary Community Voluntary Forum's 'Question & Answer' session for the Fethard Electoral Area, held in Nano Nagle Community Resource Centre, Carrick-on-Suir, on Monday 25th May.

  1. Fethard & Killusty Community Council would like to know if the proceeds from the sale of the IDA Factory on the Killenaule Road, Fethard, from South Tipperary County Council to Dawn Foods Ltd., are still available for enterprise development in Fethard as promised. If so, how much is available and how can it be accessed?

  2. Fethard Town Hall, one of Fethard's most significant medieval buildings as identified by the Heritage Council of Ireland, is currently under the care of South Tipperary County Council. Why is this building neglected and the promised preventive maintenance work not carried out at the rear of the premises, as highlighted by Jonathan Cooney, Fethard Area Engineer at the time?

  3. Appreciating the tremendous community support, including €200,000 from South Tipperary County Council, to provide a dedicated Youth Centre in Fethard, Fethard & Killusty Community Council fear that their voluntary led project and €600,000 plus investment will fail due to lack of Government support. After several applications for the establishment of a Youth Project in Fethard being turned down, we ask, what can the local councillors do to ensure the continuation of this 'state-of-the-art' investment in youth development in our community?

  4. South Tipperary County Council have pledged the provision of land at Rocklow Road, Fethard, for a collaborative community development, to include a childcare facility, community playground, sports area and general amenity area. While we appreciate that funding for the childcare facility is delayed, we ask the elected representatives, will this promise be met and the land secured for Fethard Community use?
