The Fethard Macra Field Day, which was run in conjunction with the South Tipp Macra Tag Rugby Tournament, took place in the Community Field, Fethard on Sunday last, 13th June. We would like to thank all the families who attended and braved the inclement weather on the day. We had great local support which is much appreciated. Also we would like to thank the Macra Tag Rugby teams who travelled from near and far. Well done to the rugby team from Clonmel who won the tournament and to those who won prizes on the day.

Fethard Tidy Towns
The Fethard Tidy Towns committee would like to thank all who supported their church gate collection on last weekend. The big clean up is ongoing at the moment. Black spots identified are, around the Town Hall, and the car park at the Cashel Road. Some people still dump their rubbish and leave it for us or the County Council to clean it up. So please put your bottles in the bottle bank and take your cardboard boxes and plastic bags home with you.

Thanks to all who helped in any way so far with our ‘litter picking’ which takes place on most nights of the week. We are looking for new faces to come along and help out. Planting of the flower beds is now taking place at the moment many thanks to Jimmy Horan and his team of workers for all their help. Thanks also to all who helped with our recent successful cake sale, school poster competition and to all children who took part and their teachers for their help. Keep Fethard litter free and keep your litter under control.

Historical Society trip to Athassel Abbey

Athassel Abbey near Golden where Fethard Historical Society are planning a trip on Sunday 20th June

Fethard Historical Society are planning a trip on Sunday 20th June to Athassel Abbey near Golden. We will meet outside the Town Hall in Fethard at 1.45pm, car pooling will be in place, to arrive in Athassel at 2.30pm. Local historian Carmel O’Donnell will be our guide for the afternoon and all are welcome. Fee is €3.

Athassel Abbey is situated about a mile south of Golden. It was built in the 12th century and was the most impressive achievement of the Augustinians in Ireland. It covers nearly four acres at a bend in the river Suir.

Following the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century, the buildings were subsequently neglected and fell into ruin and are now in the care of the Office of Public Works.

With an amazing sixty years teaching between them, Dick and Margaret Prendergast, together with their loved family, colleagues past and present, and Canon Tom Breen P.P. celebrated the end of one road and the beginning of a new life at Raheen House on Thursday 4th June. It was a warm and convivial occasion, tinged with nostalgia, nevertheless a fitting tribute to the wonderful dedication and verve that both Margaret and Dick brought to the countless students of Patrician Presentation Secondary School that passed through their very capable and caring hands throughout the years. Margaret Walsh from Coolmoyne, and Richard Prendergast from Kilkenny imparted so many values to boys and girls from Fethard and its hinterland, in particular a great love of the Irish language. Their legacy will live on; their grace and companionship will never be forgotten; may their future be filled with health and happiness, and a myriad of memories of a time well spent. Go n-eiri an bothair.

Dublin City Ramblers return
Dublin Ciy Ramblers
The ever-popular Dublin City Ramblers will pay a return visit to Fethard on Saturday 19th June when they appear open air at Lonergans. Tickets are €5 each available at the bar. The Dublin City Ramblers have thrilled audiences worldwide with their unique blend of ballads, folk, humour, wit and foot-tapping music. Their impressive career has spanned more than thirty-five years, with over thirty albums, top ten hits, several awards for best Ballad/Folk Group and, to top it all off, eight gold albums. It is certainly no wonder that they are classed as Ireland’s number one group!

Next week, Friday 25th June, Loudest Whisper from Cork play in Butlers Bar. A gig not to be missed.

Fethard GAA Club News

Thanks to all who renewed membership in the County Club Draw with a monthly chance to win a car prize. You can still join on a monthly basis with any promoter.

Our lotto jackpot €2,700 was not won. The numbers drawn were 8, 13, 16 and 19. We had no match three winner so the following tickets drawn won €30 each: Marie Ahearne (Main St. Fethard), Emma Fitzgerald (Monroe, Fethard), Lucy Burke (c/o Merrys, Clonmel), Kate Hearne (Abbeyview, Fethard), and John Fitzgerald (Kiltinan, Fethard). The €50 Lucky Dip was won by Sean Moloney, Red City, Fethard. Thanks to AIB, Main Street, for providing the tickets.

Our sympathy at this time is with the Cormac and Keane families Fethard on the recent death of John McCormack from Shanakyle, Drangan. John was a very prominent player with Coolmoyne and group senior hurling teams back from 1942 to 1947. Go ndeana Dia trocaire orthu.

Fethard Juvenile GAA News
Fethard Under-14 team, county champions following their win over Lorrha & Dorrha in Templemore last Saturday 12th June
Fethard Under-14 team, county champions following their win over Lorrha & Dorrha in Templemore last Saturday 12th June

We are the champions! Under-14s bring home the county title to Fethard after a brilliant win over Lorrha & Dorrha in Templemore on Saturday afternoon last 12th June.

All roads led to Templemore on Saturday afternoon when our under-14s played in the county football final and came away with a very convincing win, well done to all involved. The Juvenile Club would like to thank every single person that travelled to shout and cheer the lads on. It was a proud day for the club to see such pride in the blue and white colours of Fethard, long may it continue.

Congratulations to a great bunch of young men who played their hearts out. Tommy Anglim and John Hurley were their coaches and mentors throughout the season and the hard work and dedication was obvious when a deserving captain, Kyle Walshe, lifted the cup to bring home to Fethard.

The team was as follows Charlie Manton, Joedy Sheehan, Niall Doocey, Paul Maloney, Adam Fitzgerald, Andrew Phelan, Tommy Anglim (vice captain), Kyle Walsh (captain), Dean Dorney, Eoin O’Donovan, Jack Purcell, Alex O’Donovan, and Eoghain Hurley. Subs were: William O’Meara, Thomas Condon, Dean Walsh Kenny, Ross McCormack, Michael Earl and Nathan Costin.

Our under-16s are still hard at training. They now play in a county semifinal and rumour has it that the date is set for Saturday 26 June. Best of luck to these great bunch of young men who have the potential to bring home another county title to Fethard.

Well done and congratulations to the girls under-12 football team who are also in a county final. We wish you all the very best of luck.
