JOHNNY DUHAN FOR ABYMILL
Well known singer songwriter, Johnny Duhan, supported by Billy ‘Bob’ Dwyer from Cashel, will perform in the Abymill Theatre at 8.15pm on Friday 5th March. Booking has now opened at O’Flynn’s Menswear, Fethard, Tel: 052 31254. Tickets €10.
From his musical beginnings in the 1960s fronting the legendary band Granny’s Intentions, Johnny Duhan has earned a justly impressive reputation over the years with a series of highly regarded albums, “Just Another Town”, “Don Quixote” and “Flame”, culminating in the highly anticipated album “Tree”.
Johnny is highly respected for the depth and maturity of his music, and his distinctive and eloquently crafted songs have been recorded by a long list of musical household names including Mary Black, Mary Coughlan, Dolores Keane and Christy Moore, and a number of his songs, including “The Voyage”, have become standards of the genre.

On Saturday evening, 7th February, Dr. Willie Nolan launched the Fethard-Historic Town Atlas No. 13 for the Royal Irish Academy in the Abymill Theatre at 8.15pm (read Dr. Nolan's address). The Fethard Town Atlas, by Dr. Tadhg O'Keeffe, includes historical and archaeological details of over 400 sites, an historical essay, and a range of large-format maps, reconstructions, views and photographs. All trace the growth of Fethard from its possible origins as an early Christian church site, to its foundation as an Anglo-Norman town in the early 1200s, right up to the 20th century. Fethard will join twelve other Irish towns and cites, which have been published as part of the Irish Historical Town Atlas series.

CHARITY RIDE IN AID OF SCOIL AONGHUS

The Tipperary Hunt Pony Club, with Charles Blackmore, recently ran a charity ride from Killenaule to Moyglass in aid of Scoil Aonghus Cashel. The ride left Cashel Road at 12 noon on Sunday January 25th in glorious January weather. Patrick Kennedy led the seventy riders taking part and after passing thought Cashel Road, Crosscannon, Graigue, Roan, The Rectory and Mortlestown Castle, the twenty-minute break taken was more than welcome. The ride then moved along through Lismortagh, Mortlestown Knockinglass, Cattaganstown and Clonbrogan to finish in Moyglass village at 4pm. The total ride covered approximately ten miles with sixty fences to jump on the way. Refreshments were served and enjoyed by everyone afterwards at The Village Inn.
The committee would like to take this opportunity to thank all the landowners who allowed them to cross the country. Sincere thanks to the helpers, sponsors and emergency services who allowed for the smooth running of the day. All Pony Club Members are thanked for their wonderful support on the day and all the money raised will now go to benefit the children of Scoil Aonghus.

The next meeting of Fethard & Killusty Community Council will take place on Tuesday 17th February at 8.30pm in the Tirry Community Centre.
THE WELL GOLF SOCIETY
The Well Golf Society will hold a committee meeting this coming Friday 13th February at 8pm in The Well and, superstitious or not, all members are asked to attend. Don’t forget our first outing is a scramble and takes place at Tipperary Golf Club on Sunday March 7th. We must also take this opportunity to offer our sincere condolences to the family of the late Josie Williams who died last week.
FETHARD GAA CLUB
The Division ‘A’ Adult Football League kicks off for our club on Sunday next at 2pm in Fethard with a game against Arravale Rovers.
Our preparations for the under 21-football campaign continues on Tuesdays and Fridays in Fethard GAA Park.
Our Lotto Jackpot €2,900 was not won. We had 5 match three winners who received €30 each: Cian Morrissey (Tullamaine), Billy Treacy (Strylea), Mary Godfrey (Derryluskin), Mike Shine (c/o Rita Doyle Woodvale Walk), Brendan Hackett (30 Hughes Mill Clonmel). THE MONKS JOINED BY JOHNNY MOYNIHAN
On Sunday, 8th February, 'The Monks' treated their Abymill audience to a wonderful performance of old time bluegrass music. The band are photographed above on stage with Irish musician Johnny Moynihan who travelled with the band and made a guest appearance on the night. Johnny was a founder member of Sweeney's Men in 1966 and played with Planxty in 1973. He also played with De Dannan and backed up many singers on recordings including Annie Briggs on several albums and Jane Tabor and Maddy Prior on The Silly Sisters. Following their performance in the Abymill the musicians were persuaded to join with some local musicians and play a few more tunes in McCarthy's Bar afterwards.
MIND THAT DOG!
While we have no reports of sheep worrying by dogs in the area this year, we do have our annual appeal from local sheep farmers requesting that all dogs be kept under control, especially at night, now that the lambing season is in full swing.

Remains left McCarthy's Funeral Parlour, Fethard, at 6.30 pm on Friday 6th February for Holy Trinity Church Fethard. Requiem Mass took place at 11am on Saturday followed by burial in Moyglass cemetery.

DIED RECENTLY
We record the death of Vincent Cunningham (aged 23), Rathkenny, Drangan, who died on Monday 2nd February. Remains left McCarthy's Funeral Parlour, Fethard, at 7pm on Tuesday 3rd February for the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Drangan. Requiem Mass took place at 11am on Wednesday followed by burial in the Assumption Cemetery, Drangan.
We record the death of Josie Williams, Canon Hayes Court, Fethard, who died on Monday 2nd February. Remains left McCarthy's Funeral Parlour, Fethard, at 7pm on Wednesday 4th February for The Church of the Sacred Heart, Killusty. TAG IT
Quite a number of local residents were caught flat-footed on Monday morning, 2nd February, when failing to attach the new required ‘tag’ to their rubbish bin prior to collection. The staff of South Tipperary County Council refuse lorry were obliged, as per instructions, to leave the untagged bins uncollected.
You have been reminded, if necessary, that bin tags are available (to date) from, Kenny’s Centra Supermarket, The Green; McManus’s Grocery, Burke Street and Barmore XL Stop and Shop, Main Street. Tags cost 50c for attaching to recyclable bags and €5 for your regular bin and are collected on alternate weeks.
DIED RECENTLY
The death has occurred on Saturday 31st January of Bridget 'Bridie' Phelan (nee Hartigan), Canon Hayes Court, Fethard, and formerly of Grawn, Fethard. Interment took place in Calvary Cemetery.
The death of the late Bride Phelan severs a very long association with Fethard Country Markets, of which she was a member since its foundation almost 60 years ago. A regular attender and helper at the weekly market, she will be greatly missed by her many colleagues and customers. Her fellow passengers on the Fethard Bingo Bus, on which she had great craic during their many bingo trips over the years, will also miss Bridie.
