Slievenamon Pilgrimage to Holy Year Cross

The Fethard & Killusty Parish annual pilgrimage to Holy Year Cross on Slievenamon took place on Sunday 15th August, and we had one of the largest turnouts in recent years.  This year’s climb took place in beautiful weather and commenced at 2pm with a gathering of 50 people at the ‘Hill Wall’ where our Parish Priest, Fr Tom Breen, blessed the new wooden cross. Fr Gerry Horan OSA then led the climb to Holy Year Cross.  The Rosary was recited as the crowd made their way up.  Before the Cross was reached, the crowd had swelled to 150 and a photograph was taken of those present at the top.
The crowd then made their way back to O’Donnells’ field where Canon Power had earlier led the Rosary for those who were unable to make the climb. On returning to the field, patrons were in for a surprise because the local committee had sourced and erected a Mass Rock which will be used from now on as our mass alter.  Canon James Power, assisted by Fr Tom Breen, blessed the new Mass Rock.  This was followed by con-celebrated mass attended by approximately 200 people.  Canon Power thanked all those who helped to make it such a great occasion and he also thanked those who had placed the Mass Rock in the field. After mass, the locals provided tea and refreshments, which were greatly appreciated.

Killusty residents photographed with the new 'Mass Rock' used to celebrate Mass on the Fethard & Killusty Annual Pilgrimage to Holy Year Cross on Slievenamon. L to R: Billy Prout, Willie O'Meara, Christy Williams, Jimmy and Eileen O'Donnell, and Kevin Ryan.

Many people are to be thanked for making this day possible. Firstly to our clergy, who give so freely of their time.  To all who participated, young and old, near and far, regulars and first-timers, who took the time to make the pilgrimage.  To the local committee, for their great work over the past few weeks.  A special word of thanks to Jimmy and Eileen O’Donnell for giving the use of their field and for helping to make the day possible. Thanks also to Matty Tynan and Dermot O’Meara who helped us in our hour of need, and to Tommy Butler and the Premier Music Store, Clonmel, for the amplification.

National Heart Foundation Day takes place on Sunday 26th September, and all going well, we intend to mark the occasion by having one of our walks ready to launch on that date.

Dan the Man!
No one in Fethard would hardly remember Dan Considine, or we wonder how many even heard of him?  Dan Considine of Barrack Street was a Vet in the days of when the horse was all powerful and played a very important part in the economic, sporting and transporting lives of the people of Ireland.

Dan was a Vet without academic qualifications and his knowledge of horses, their ailments and injuries, was unsurpassed.  His services were sought, not alone in Fethard, but over a wide area of Tipperary where he was very well known as a knowledgeable and competent horse doctor.
Following his death on the 28th October, 1933, at the age of 74, the veterinary practice in Fethard was taken over by Mr James Schofield M.R.C.V.S.

New Garda Recruit
Amongst the new Garda recruits who graduated at the recent passing out parade at Templemore Garda Training College was Tommy Gahan, son of Tommy and Paula Gahan, Cedar Grove, Fethard.  Garda Gahan, who will be stationed at the Bridewell Garda Station, Dublin, where his uncle, Detective Garda Patsy Morrissey has 22 years service just completed.  Tommy is one of Fethard’s up and coming young footballers, a star performer in Fethard’s run of four successive South Tipperary under/21 championship titles and three out of four county championships in the same period, Tommy has also played with distinction for the county Tipperary under/21 football team.

Best of luck Tommy in your new career from your many friends in Fethard and Tipperary GAA circles.

Died Recently
The death has occurred in New York of Ms Theresa McCarthy, formerly of Burke Street, Fethard.  The late Theresa McCarthy who had passed her 92nd birthday, was one of our very long time emigrants who never lost touch with, or interest in, her native Fethard.  Interment took place in New York.

Stolen Horses Returned
The two horses removed from the lands on their owner, Mrs Jacqui Freyne, Knockbordan, have been found.  The horses were found by Vincent Murphy on the lands of the adjoining farm on Thursday 12th August.  These fields had been diligently searched during the previous week.  Signs would seem to show the horses were in the possession of someone while missing.

Jacqui is fully convinced that the widespread publicity given to their disappearance on the local press, TV, contacts by phone and visits to horse fairs, played a very significant part in their mysterious return.

Jacqui and her husband Tom, wish to thank sincerely all who were so helpful in assisting the safe return of the horses.

Jimmy’s Return to Health
Great to see our distinguished citizen, Jimmy Ryan, back in town and looking so well after his term in hospital.  Unfortunately while he was away, some few weekend revellers thought it would be a god idea of fun to kill one of his five geese and hang the carcase on the gate of the pound.  How low can one get?  Maybe if anyone has any information they would pass it on to the relevant authorities as soon as possible. All information can be passed on confidentially to members of the local Garda or to the Garda Confidential Free-phone No: 1800 666 111.

Famine Collection
A collection in aid of famine relief in Sudan will be taken up at all masses in the parish this weekend.  Ireland has suffered as much from famine in the past, as any country.  The effects of the potato famine in Ireland were felt for at least the following century.  With the memory of our own Great Famine of the eighteen forties still remembered, it is felt that a very generous response will be forthcoming to this weekend’s appeal.

Concern Collection
The Collectors of the Church Gate Collection for Concern which was taken up on the week-end of 30th July & 1st Aug would like to thank most sincerely all those generously supported this worthy cause.  The total amount collected came to €886.05.
