A Bring & Buy Sale will be held this Sunday 24th January between 2pm and 5pm in the Tirry Centre, Fethard, in aid of the Goal Haiti Appeal. All items such as unwanted gifts, books, cds, dvds, ornaments, buns, cakes etc can be dropped in to the Tirry Centre on Saturday between 2pm and 4pm, on Sunday between 12noon and 2pm or also dropped off at 27 St Patricks Place, Fethard, anytime before Sunday. New Year, New Skills?
Are you interested in learning how to use a computer, surf the Net or send an e-mail? If you are, read on. Fethard & Killusty Community Council, in conjunction with South Tipperary V.E.C., will hold Beginners Computer Classes, in the Internet Café at Fethard Youth Centre, in the coming weeks. It is proposed that a number of courses, such as Introduction to Computers; Using the Internet & E-mail and Basic Typing, will be held, depending on interest. These courses will be four to six weeks duration. If you are interested please contact Marion at Fethard Youth Centre (Phone: 6132611) from 10am to 4.30pm, Monday and Tuesday, and from 10am to 1pm on Wednesday, or the Community Office (Phone: 6131000), Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. This is an ideal opportunity to learn new skills without having to leave town.

Died Recently
 The death has occurred on Tuesday 19th January of Mr Sean Callaghan, St. Patrick's Place, Fethard. Reposing at McCarthy's Funeral Parlour from 5pm to 7pm on Wednesday 20th January, followed by removal to Holy Trinity Parish Church, Fethard.
Funeral Mass at 11am on Thursday 21st January followed by interment at Calvary Cemetery.
The death has occurred on Saturday 16th January of Peggy Stapleton, late of Thurles and formerly Brodeen, Fethard. Interment took place in Calvary Cemetery.
Creating Resilient Communities Workshops
Tipperary Institute, in association with Carnegie UK Trust, is hosting a series of workshops focused on communities. It is an opportunity to take a look at various ways that Tipperary Institute can work with communities in reducing energy costs, creating local economy, building personal resilience and local food production. If you are interested in participating with others in exploring these issues please come along to the ideas workshop which will be held in the Millennium Family Resource Centre, Glengoole, on Wednesday next, January 27th, from 7.30 to 10pm. Fethard Macra Club
Due to the adverse weather conditions over the beginning of the month the semifinal of the All Ireland Public Speaking Competition will now take place on this Saturday at 8pm at the Horse and Jockey Hotel, all welcome to attend. Best of luck to Una Shanahan, Eamon Horan and Julie Kennedy who will represent Fethard. Four other teams will also participate.
The National Talent Competition will be held in Holy Cross on Friday 22nd January at 8pm. Competitions will include a wide variety of events. All welcome to attend.
South Tipp Macra will host ‘Question Time’ in Roaches’ Bar in Tipperary Town on Friday 29th January at 9pm. Interviews will also be held for ‘Miss Blue Jeans’, ‘Queen of the Land’, ‘Mr Personality’ and ‘Miss Macra’. Interviews will take place from 7.30pm.
Kilkenny Macra will host a Dress Dance on Saturday 13th February in the Ormond Hotel in Kilkenny. Meal and DJ are included in ticket price of €35. Contact Kilkenny Macra for further information.

Boxing makes a return to Fethard
All roads will lead to Fethard next Sunday 24th January, when Clonmel Boxing club will present an afternoon of top class boxing, which will be held for the first time in The Ballroom, Fethard at 2.30pm.

A host of National and International Champions including Olympian John Joe Joyce, four times Irish Senior Champion Eric Donovan, European Union Heavyweight Champion Con Sheehan (Clonmel), nine times Irish Champion Kevin Fennessy (Clonmel) and a host of other top boxers, included also on the bill is our very own local boxing hero, two times Irish Champion Jack Connolly (Fethard) whose opponent is Irish Champion Lee Reeves (Limerick).
A brilliant afternoons entertainment is guaranteed, and with admission just €10, you wont get this much talent under one roof again. So don’t forget, next Sunday 24th January, 2.30pm, be there, this is one not to be missed.
Fethard Youth Centre
Fethard Youth Centre will reopen on this Friday night, 22nd January, from 8pm to 10pm. A meeting for adult leaders will be held on Thursday night at 8pm at the Youth Centre. All leaders and adults willing to help or get involved in the running of the Youth Centre are welcome to come along.

With the White Heathers
Ballyluskey White Heather Harriers had a good turn-out and good hunting from their meet at Clonacody on Sunday last. The fixture, which had been postponed from the previous week due to prevailing weather conditions, was favoured on Sunday last by Spring-like conditions. A fox from the small pit in the field across the road from the meet ran towards Market Hill, crossing the Fethard – Clonmel Road he ran through Newtown down by Lakefield House across the Baptistgrange Road where they lost him. Drawing through Jossestown they hunted down to Ballinlough Bog where they checked and split. One lot hunted to the Plantation and the other down to the Moyle River. Finding at Ballinlough House they crossed the road at the bridge and hunted well right across to the main Clerihan-D’Arcy’s Cross road where they lost him. From the Ash Grove in Ballyhomeen they had a short run to the big plantation across the Fethard – Cahir Road. The day concluded with a run from the big covert at Ballyhomeen. Winners in the White Heathers January members and friends monthly draw were 1st (€200) – Michael Keane, Knockelly and 2nd (€100) Ms Biddy Walsh, St. Patrick’s Place. The Ballyluskey White Heather Harriers meet on Sunday next at Kilvemnon School, near Mullinahone, at 11am. This meet, a new venue for the pack provided one of the best days of hunting last season. Here’s hoping for a repeat performance on Sunday.

Fethard Ladies Football Club
The Annual General Meeting of Fethard Ladies Football Club will take place in the Tirry Community Centre on Friday 29th January at 8pm. Following a very successful year in 2009 we hope to see a large attendance to prepare for an exciting 2010.
Fethard and Killusty Community Games
Community Games season is up and running again for 2010. The draw for all team events took place in Roscrea on Monday last details of which will be issued next week. We have entered teams in Football, Hurling, Indoor Soccer, Juvenile Quiz, Rugby and Volleyball. Preparations are currently taking place for our area quiz which will take place in the near future, so all those under 14 are advised to put your thinking caps on now.
The first County Final of the year is the Cross Country for U/13 and mixed distance relays for U/12 and U/14 boys and girls. This event will take place in Thurles Crokes Field on Sunday 31st January at 2.30pm. Entry fee to be paid on the day.

Vyvienne Long will play in the Abymill Theatre on Saturday 6th February. Vyvienne Long first achieved celebrity as a cellist in collaboration with Damian Rice, producing the soaring melodies and distinctive sound associated with his multi million selling albums O and 9. International tours followed where she instantly charmed fans with her unique ‘cello song’ and quirky take on the White Stripes ‘Seven Nation Army’. She soon began writing her own material and formed a core band which typically includes three cellos, piano, drums and double bass. Vyvienne released her EP ‘Birdtalk’ in 2006.
Her performances include Other Voices (TV series), the JK Ensemble 'Session’ on Lyric FM and critically acclaimed gigs at the Electric Picnic and Spiegeltent in ’08. Admired as a compelling vocalist and songwriter of incisive wit, critics have drawn comparisons with Bjork, Tori Amos and Joanna Newsome.
Vyvienne Long’s debut album, ‘Caterpillar Sarabande’, will be released in February 2010. ‘Happy Thoughts’, the final track on the album is currently available on iTunes (and is featured in the TV commercial for a popular brand of cheese at the moment).
Vyvienne is playing in the Abymill Theatre in Fethard to promote her first album, released online on Saturday 6th February, the same day as her Fethard date. Tickets are €20 (€18 online) and are available from ticketmaster, tickets.ie, McCarthy’s Fethard, O’Flynn’s Menswear Fethard and Premier Music Clonmel.

Fethard Bridge Club Results
In spite of the inclement weather, fourteen hardy souls turned up for bridge on 13th January for our first game of the New Year and the results of the game were:
1st Gross - Anna Cooke and Bernie O’Meara; 2nd Gross - Nell Broderick and David O’Meara; 1st Nett - Anne Connolly and Annie O’Brien; 2nd Nett - Gemma Burke and Rita Kane.

Music and Movement for pre-school children
Bunny Hop music and movement is an hour of stimulating entertainment for 0-4 year olds. Songs and Rhymes helping language development and musical instruments assisting eye-hand co-ordination and concentration. Fethard & District Rugby Club
Our senior team travelled to Fermoy for their J2 competition and came with a very credible win following the long lay off over the Christmas and the arctic weather.
This was a great team performance with all involved backing each other and playing intelligent rugby. Fethard were first to put points on the board with Jim O’Brien crossing for a great score. The Fethard backs were on top throughout, both defensively and offensively, with find displays from Alan O'Connor at full back, with Eoin Doyle and Paul Scully in fine running form constantly breaking the gain line. Tom Anglim had another fine game and set up Tommy Gahan for Fethard’s second try under the posts, the conversion was missed. PJ. Morrissey, John Hannigan and John Russell put in great performances throughout, and just as Fermoy were beginning to boss proceedings Paul Ronan was introduced for Fethard and had an immediate impact covering every blade of grass to ensure Fethard hung on to the 10 point to 5 lead.
Our under 19s travelled to Tipperary Town to take on Clanwilliam and both teams served up a trilling game of rugby. Clanwilliam were more assured with ball in hand but all the Fethard team were tackling like demons and repulsed every attack Clan threw at them. Fethard eventually secured possession and rucked up field to release Matt Fitzgerald who scored under the posts. Ben Walsh converted, giving Fethard the lead which they held until mid way into the second half when missed tackles allowed Clan in under the posts to tie the game.
Fethard attacked at the restart, won the ball and released Colm Shanahan to cross for his first try in three years, this score was well deserved as Colm had one of his finest games for Fethard. This was a great team performance but for handling errors a game we could have won but the draw seemed a fair result giving the rugby served up by both teams.
Our under 13s travelled to Waterpark and lost to a much bigger side as the majority of the Fethard team are under 12. Fethard scored two great tries in the first half, one from Darren Prout and the other by Adam Fitzgerald. Others to impress on the day were Tom Stapleton, Jack Gleeson, Jason Ryan and Brian Norton.

Local stars perform in our Bars
Budding musicians and performers will be delighted to get the chance to perform in the upcoming ‘Stars in Our Bars’ talent competition due to be held during February and March at Butlers, Main Street. This competition, strictly for over 18s, is run in association with the Vintners Federation of Ireland and is sponsored by Smithwicks. The contest is open to all types of entertainers, singers, dancers, instrumentalists, comedians, bands, choirs, speciality acts, etc.
Butlers aim, following a number of heats, semifinals and final, is to pick two candidates to represent them at county level and hopefully follow on with regional and national success. All stages of this competition will be judged by independent adjudicators, with some audience participation at heat stages.
