Last Week's News - Forward Week's News
Gortnahoe & Glengoole - Killenaule - Mullinahone - Ballingarry

Fethard Juvenile GAA Club

Juvenile players and club members photographed last Sunday about to leave by bus to the All Ireland Hurling Quarter Finals in Croke Park where thirty-five children and six adults set of to see Tipperary v Galway, and Kilkenny v Limerick.

Last week was a very busy week for Fethard Juvenile GAA Club during which we played six games in under-8, 10, 12, 14, and 16 categories. We will start with the under-8s who played St Patricks. The game finished a draw with Dean Kenny scoring a point in the last minute. We had some brilliant displays from Derek O’Brien and Dean Dorney, and also our goal scorers, Jessie McCormack and Stephen Crotty.

Our under-10s then played St Patricks and came away with a win. With Brian Healy and Willie Morgan in outstanding form we built up a big lead, which we held onto until the end of the game. On Monday last we travelled to Killenaule to play Ballingarry in a tournament and got beaten by 5 points. The game was very close but we faded near the end and lost our way. Well done to all. Training continues on Saturday from 3pm to 4pm.

The under-12s played their final league game against Kilsheelan in Fethard last Saturday, which finished in a draw. This result will now put us into the semifinal where we will have to play at our best if we are to succeed. The date is as yet unknown but well done to all involved.

Our under-14s played St Patricks in Fethard last Thursday and survived a late rally by our opponents. We eventually won by 4 points. Eoin O’Connell, Matt Fitzgerald and Ciarán Ryan were outstanding on the night. Our next game is Thursday 4th August at 7pm away to Cahir. Bus leaves Fethard GAA field at 6.15pm.

The under-16s played their first game, also against St Patricks, in Fethard and after a tight game we came good in the end to win by 5 points. Great credit must go to both sets of players for their commitment and skill level shown. Fethard had many stars on the night but will need to repeat this performance in the next game away to Cahir on 8th August. Well done to all involved.

Other news last week was to be a historic one, when with the aid of a anonymous person, we at huge expense bought a Defibrillator (Heart Machine) which we will have available and operated by a trained club official at each game should the need to use it arise. We will give more details later.

Next weeks notes will have all the details about our Summer Camp, which takes place from the 15th to 19th August.

With the South hurling final on in Fethard this weekend all club officers are to be in GAA field on Sunday at 1.30pm to help the stewards.

Finally, last weekend we sent a bus to the All Ireland Quarter Finals in Croke Park where thirty-five children and six adults set of to see Tipperary v Galway, and Kilkenny v Limerick, and while Tipp did not win, all involved got to see the top hurlers in the game show there skills in the best stadium in Europe. Hopefully one day maybe one of our boys will play on this big stage. Following a great day’s outing they stopped in Portlaoise for food and arrived back in Fethard at 10pm safe and sound. A special thanks must go to the adults who made themselves available for the trip.

Jubilee 700 Ecuador Appeal

Photographed at the Augustinian Abbey Golf Classic in aid of Augustinian missionaries working in Ecuador are L to R: Bernard Walsh, Paddy Broderick and Maurice Loughlin (Southport UK).

The Abbey 700 Committee wish to thank everyone who contributed in any way towards the success of their appeal to help Augustinian missionaries working in Ecuador. The raffle alone raised over €4,500. The three lucky recipients of the prizes were: 1st Vincent Cummins, Burke Street, Fethard; 2nd Marie Allen, St. Patrick's Place, Fethard; 3rd Jim Prendergast, Cork. Thanks to your generosity, many malnourished children will in future, enjoy a nutritious meal daily.

At the Augustinian Abbey Golf Classic were L to R: Fr. Ben O'Brien OSA and Margaret Lawlor, Slievenamon Golf Club.

At the Augustinian Abbey Golf Classic were L to R: Conor Maher, Marion O'Connor, Patricia Maher and Nelly Ryan.

The Golf Classic held on 22nd July, also in aid of Ecuador, received a huge response. Fifty-two teams participated in a three-ball-scramble, in beautiful sunshine, at Slievenamon Golf Course. The committee are most grateful to those businesses and individuals who sponsored a team, a green, a tee or sent in donations. As the amount raised surpassed expectations, Fr Gerry's hopes are that funds will now enable us to sponsor a doctor for a year, at the hospital run by his Augustinian Brothers in Ecuador. Although the winners of the golf classic were "locals" there were visiting teams from Galway, Dungarvan, New Ross and Cork, to name but a few. A special thank-you to Brendan Kenny, Secretary of Slievenamon Golf Club, who helped us enormously with the organisation of the competition, and also to John Lonergan for his help.

The winning teams in the Augustinian Abbey Classic were:
1st: Eddie Pyke, Edmund Pyke, Herbie Buck (54.4 points)
2nd: Denis Burke, Michael O’Meara, Colin Allen (54.8 points)
3rd: Denis Burke, Mick Burke (Cahir), Billy Kealy (Cahir) (55.5 points)
4th: Owen Delahunty, Ross O'Dwyer, Martin Cooney (55.5 points)
Best Ladies Team: Mary Comerford, Rosemary Lalor, Mary Kenrick (60.8 points)
Ladies Nearest the pin: Kathleen Kelly.
Gents Nearest the pin: Michael Leahy.
Ladies Longest Drive: Mary Comerford.
Gents Longest Drive: Paul Kavanagh.

Second place winners in the Augustinian Abbey Golf Classic in aid of Augustinian missionaries working in Ecuador are L to R: Denis Burke, Colin Allen, Michael O'Meara and Fr. Gerry Horan OSA who presented the prizes.

Forthcoming Jubilee events include A concert in The Abymill Theatre on Saturday 20th August, at 8:15pm, featuring "Cór Cois Abhann" from Cork who will entertain us with an evening of light music. Their repertoire varies from the classic, ‘Down by the Sally Gardens’, to Abba’s famous, ‘Money, Money, Money’ and ‘Thank you for the Music’, to Burt Bacharach’s, ‘Close to You’. Accompanying them will be Sinéad Ní Mhurchú, soprano, and also, classical guitarist, Antanas Keturakis. This promises to be a very enjoyable evening not to be missed. Musical director is Ian Sexton. Tickets are €15 and booking is now open at O’Flynn's Menswear, Burke Street, Fethard, Tel: 052 31252, or from any Jubilee 700 Committee member.

On the Feast of St. Augustine, which falls on Sunday 28th August, Banna Cluain Meala and Majorettes will visit Fethard. The band will lead a childrens’ Fancy Dress Parade from the Ballroom to the Augustinian Abbey grounds, where the Band will give a recital. The Parade begins of 3pm and prizes will be awarded after the recital. More details to follow.

Keeping track of the scores (above) at the Augustinian Abbey Golf Classic were L to R: Agnes Evans, Mary Healy and Nell Broderick; and the raffle (below) are L to R: Joan Anglim, Kitty Delany and Ann Cooney.

Holy Year Cross Pilgrimage
The annual pilgrimage to the Holy Year Cross on Slievenamon takes places on Sunday August 14th (a day earlier than the Feast of the Assumption of Our Lady). Pilgrims are requested to assemble at the mountain wall at 2pm sharp. Parking facilities are available in O’Donnell’s field.

What’s happening the Town Hall?
We have an enquiry from a local pensioner John (Fethard Forum), who asks, “Does anyone know who is responsible for the Town Hall? Is it a community project or does the County Council look after it? I only ask because with The Square looking beautiful these days it’s a pity to see the Town Hall looking neglected all for the want of a coat of paint. This is one of our most historic buildings in the town and I think it is disgraceful to see it in such a state of disrepair. I for one would gladly donate some money to see the paint job carried out even though I am a pensioner.”

The Well Golf Society
Once again we were blessed with a beautiful day for our fourth outing of the season, which was held at Adare Manor. The results are as follows:
Nearest the pin: Paul Dillon, Brian Mullins, Joe Corbett.
Rumble: 1st: Sean Aylward, Danny Mullins, Kevin Ryan and James Cowlard.
2nd: Willie Morrissey, Ernie Makem and Michael Kenrick.
3rd: Paul Dillon, Mary Stakelum and Pat Woodlock.

Thanks to everyone who made the effort to be there. A special word of thanks to our chief organiser on the day, Michael Kenrick, and also to Joe Corbett for his invaluable assistance. Our next outing takes place on Saturday August 27th at Callan Golf Club.

Descendants and relatives of Michael Doheny
The following information supplied to us by William P. Smith (husband of Helen Doheny-Smith) may be of interest to those related to, or researching information on Fenian Leader Michael Doheny who was born on 22 May 1806, at Brookhill, Fethard.

New York Tipperary-men’s N & B Association, who erected a monument to Michael Doheny on 7th October 1989 at his previously unmarked burial place in First Calvary Cemetery, Section 4, Laurel Hill Boulevard, Woodside, New York. Pictured above at the unveiling are: Michael Flannery, Helen Doheny-Smith, Jim Grogan, Cashel, Paddy Doheny and Patricia Doheny.

On Sunday December 4, 1988, the late Mrs Mary Healy, on behalf of the Fethard Historical Society, unveiled a plaque commemorating Michael Doheny at his birthplace in Brookhill. A lecture on the “Young Ireland Rising 1848” by Dr. Willie Nolan took place afterwards in the Abymill Theatre. Ensuing coverage in the Nationalist led to an enquiry for further information on Michael Doheny from the New York Tipperary-men’s N & B Association, who erected a monument to him on 7th October 1989 at his previously unmarked burial place in First Calvary Cemetery, Section 4, Laurel Hill Boulevard, Woodside, New York.

Mr Edmond Doheny of Fethard, residing in Cashel, passed away in the 1960's. Edmond had four children, now all believed to be deceased. Recently, a son, Edmond Doheny of Cashel passed away. He was the brother of Patrick Doheny [previously deceased). In July 2005, the Dohenys of Cashel visited America to have a family reunion. Presently living in Cashel are Edmond’s offspring, Edward Doheny, Anne Doheny-Quinn and Helen Doheny-Cullen. The late Paddy Doheny’s offspring living in America are: Michael Doheny, Kelly Doheny, Helen Doheny-Smith, Kathleen Doheny-Moltzen, Eileen Doheny-Fontaine, Maureen Doheny-Hohne and Sheila Doheny.

Rare Albino Hedgehog

Following our report in last week’s issue on the Cloneen Albino Hedgehog, we were amazed to receive a report that another one had been found in the same area. This little fellow was a bit more fortunate. The motorist who saw him on the road, a local native and animal lover, pulled over and picked him up. The Hedgehog, christened ‘Alby’ by a bright seven-year-old girl who called to see him on Monday, we are glad to report is doing very well on a diet of snails, slugs, and tinned cat food.

The odds against two of these rare ‘freaks of nature’ of the animal world being found in the same area must be thousands to one!

Fethard GAA Club News
Fethard hosts the Senior Hurling Final on this Sunday 7th August at 3.30pm between Killenaule and Ballingarry preceded by the Minor A Football Final at 2.15pm when Moyle Rovers and Commercials do battle.

The Senior Football Munster League game took place in Fethard on Wednesday 27th July which finished on a drawn scoreline of Fethard 1-10, Nemo Rangers 0-13. The game was very entertaining with both teams playing fine free-flowing football and having been reduced to 14 players for the last 20 minutes our remaining players showed great character in getting a draw. It was a good challenge from a top class opposition. The team on the night was: Paul Fitzgerald, Michael Carroll, Shane Walsh, Ian Kenrick, Willie Morrissey, Michael Aherne, James Smyth, Cian Maher, Jamie McCormack, Carl Maher, Michael Dillon 1-0, John P Looby, Conor McCarthy 0-2 (1f), Brian Coen 0-7 (6f), and Kenneth O’Donnell 0-1. Subs used were: Shane Aylward for 3, Brian Burke for 4, Martin Coen for 13. This result only gives us 1 point from two games played in the Munster League.

In Minor B Hurling on Friday last we were defeated in Cahir by Skeheenarinka on a scoreline, Fethard 1-3, Skeheenarinka 2-13. This leaves with one game remaining on Wednesday 10th August against St Marys.

Our Junior A Football team is out on this Friday evening, 5th August, against Ballylooby /Castlegrace in Clonmel at 7.15pm.

The Lotto Jackpot of €2,200 was not won. The numbers drawn in Lonergan’s Bar were: 2, 13, 15 and 20. We had no ‘Match Three’ winner so five €30 Lucky Dips were drawn: K O’Riordan (Cloran), Margaret Fitzgerald (Monroe), Dolores Cleary (Market Hill), Colm Coen (Killusty), and Teresa Walsh (Ballyknockane). The €50 Lucky Dip was won by Dick Burke (Main Street).

A Fishing Tale!
Nial Sayers, son of Jim Sayers, St. Patrick’s Place, featured prominently in a programme on the Irish in Jersey Island in last Monday’s RTE Nationwide programme. Niall, a very pleasant young man, was asked by the presenter Michael Ryan, why a young man who came to Jersey to work as a plasterer was now making a career of deep sea fishing.

Niall’s reply was, “Well I suppose it was only natural I should follow a great family tradition.” Niall’s father Jim has fished on the Irish International Fly Fishing team, his grandfather John Sayers and his great-grandfather old Tom ‘Coiner’ Sayers were also two of the best dry-fly fishermen ever to fish the Anner and Clashawley rivers. So we reckon Niall got it right!

Fethard Through the Ages!
Photographed at the ‘Flower Festival — Fethard Through the Ages’ held in aid of the Restoration Work on Holy Trinity Church of Ireland are L to R: Rt. Revd. Peter Barrett M.A. Bishop of Cashel and Ossory, Sr Philomena and Sr. Betty from Presentation Convent, Fethard.

The Flower Festival, ‘Fethard Through the Ages’, held in aid of Restoration Work on the Holy Trinity Church of Ireland, was a great success. The Church looked magnificent adorned with all the beautiful flower arrangements. Unfortunately, on the Sunday we had to move the craft stalls inside the church because of heavy rain. Approximately €3,500 was raised towards the restoration fund for which we are most grateful.

Photographed at the ‘Flower Festival — Fethard Through the Ages’ held in aid of the Restoration Work on Holy Trinity Church of Ireland are L to R: Revd. George A. Knowd, Rt. Revd. Peter Barrett M.A. Bishop of Cashel and Ossory, and Fr. Tom Breen P.P. Fethard & Killusty.

Many thanks to all those stall holders who came along and also to those who demonstrated their craft, which was of great interest to all present. We also thank the many helpers, those who arranged flowers, helped with teas, the raffle, the two flower shops— Ann Fitzpatrick of O’Connell Mall, Clonmel, and Jimmy Fitzgerald of ‘Every Blooming Thing’, Westgate, Clonmel — who donated their arrangements.
The Festival closed on Sunday evening with a lovely service given by Rt. Revd. Peter Barrett M.A. Bishop of Cashel and Ossory.

Church Gate Collection for The Irish Pilgrimage Trust
The Annual Church Gate Collection for The Irish Pilgrimage Trust takes place in Fethard on the week-end of 6th 7th August, '05. People are asked to be generous as possible. A number of special needs young people from the area spent a week in Lourdes with the Trust this Eastertide.

The Trust (I.H.C.P.T) takes young people with special needs to Lourdes at Eastertime every year. This pilgrimage is slightly different from many others, which go to Lourdes, most importantly it is designed especially for the young people who participate fully in a very varied spiritual and social program during the week. The pilgrimage is divided into groups of approximately 12 young people with a similar number of adult companions, including a Group Leader, Nurse, and Chaplain. Each group is assigned to the care of one of the Trust doctors.

This is a holiday as well as a pilgrimage; each group takes in the sights — perhaps a trip to Gavarnie, high up in the Pyrenees, or a visit to a local market to experience the French "at home". There is even time for partying and the "craic". All the adult companions pay their own fares while the Trust covers the cost of those young people selected to travel.

The Irish Pilgrimage Trust welcomes applications from young people with:
- A Physical Disability or Illness (aged 9-18 years) or,
- A Learning Disability (aged 11 - 21 years).

For further information on I.H.C.P.T. or for application forms for future pilgrimages please phone Sr. Betty Cagney 086-6322341

The committee of the Fethard & Killusty Community Council would like to say a big thank-you to all those teenagers who turned up on Tuesday 26th July last to participate in the Feasibility Study for a Youth Facility. Over thirty people attended on the day. Mary and Una, from Tipperary Institute, were very impressed with both the turnout and the level of interest among the group. Staff at the college will now collate the information gathered and will be back to us in a few weeks time with their suggestions as to what direction the project should take.
