SLIEVENAMON PILGRIMAGE TO HOLY YEAR CROSS

The annual pilgrimage to the Holy Year Cross on Slievenamon took place on Friday August 15th, the feast of the Assumption of Our Lady. A large group turned up for this year's pilgrimage, which was blessed with beautiful weather. Parking facilities were provided in Jim O’Donnell’s field, where Mass was celebrated afterwards by Canon James Power, Fr Gerry Horan OSA and Fr Timmy Walsh OSA for the intentions of all those who made the pilgrimage.

HOW TO BE A DJ
Not the disk playing variety but the hurly playing kind. A new ballad, “The Legend of D.J.”, recalls the prowess on the hurling field of Kilkenny hurling legend, D. J. Carey. One of the lines should be framed and hung in all GAA Juvenile dressing rooms, “His name was never taken, no card was ever shown.” This ‘play the game’ spirit is the hallmark of nearly all great players and one that readily comes to mind is Tipperary’s immortal, Jimmy Doyle. The same could be said of current young Tipperary star, Eoin Kelly. A list of the best local players of the past fifty years would surly include Liam Connolly and the late Cly Mullins and Mick Byrne very near the top. The same attributes could also be applied to all. Enough said!

WHERE IS COOLMOYNE ?
“Where is Coolmoyne?” enquired a visitor at Kerry Street Cross on Saturday last. Before the local man had time to reply, the visitor added, “I should know as I was born nearby!”
The visitor was John O’Donovan who left Fethard as a young boy. How many remember his parents and grandparents running O’Donovan’s Bar and Grocery in the premises now known as Burkes Bridge Bar.

CHARLES McCARTHY
We had an Australian visitor last week from Sydney, seeking information on Charles McCarthy. Charles McCarthy was a surgeon, engineer, architect, artist and operatic singer of international repute and was born at Main Street in the house where AIB now operate. He was educated at the local National School, and at Castleknock College, following which he entered the Catholic University of Medicine, Dublin. During his youth he excelled at most sports. He interrupted his studies to serve with an ambulance unit in the Franco-Prussian War and he received the Licentiate of the King and Queen’s College of Physicians in Ireland in 1872. He practised in Manchester before returning to Fethard, where he married Anastasia Cantwell on September 24th 1873. By 1877 he had moved to Clonmel, he had an extensive practice. After his wife’s death, he married a Contralto Marion Cuddihy, in Dublin, in 1881 on the 25th June.
In 1884, he graduated M.D. at the University of Brussels and was admitted a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.
In poor health, he emigrated with his family to Sydney in the same year. He soon established a wide practice in St. Elizabeth Street, he was known as a gentle and skilful Surgeon. He became Honorary Physician and Surgeon at St. Vincent’s Hospital and Personal Physician to Cardinal Moran.
Prominent in Catholic and Irish Committees, he was Chairman of the ‘98 Centenary Celebration Committee in Sydney and designed the Monument over the grave of Michael Dwyer, the ‘Wicklow Chief’, self-exiled to Australia in 1805. He had a natural talent for music, painting and sculpture. He composed several comic operas, wrote patriotic songs, lectured and wrote on music and in 1912 helped to establish Tom Moore Concerts in Sydney. Though self-taught, he excelled as a Sculptor. Sarah Bernhardt sat for him, for a portrait of Cleopatra, although his paintings were mostly of a religious theme. His best works as a sculptor were probably a life size bust of Napoleon, exhibited at the 1915 International Exhibition in San Francisco, and the Statuette “Ills ne Passeant Pas”, embodying the Spirit of France.
He was also gifted with a beautiful singing voice.
Charles McCarthy of Fethard - Surgeon, Painter, Sculptor, Architect, Musician and Patron of the Arts, - a true Irishman and Patriot, died in his Elizabeth Street home in Sydney on June 7th, 1919, and after Requiem Mass in St. Mary’s Cathedral was buried in Waverly Cemetery near the’98 Memorial. He was survived by his wife and their daughter, Maude, a celebrated violist, who are both living in England.
Charles McCarthy’ first wife is interred in the McCarthy family burial plot at the rear of Fethard Parish Church. He Memoriam is enshrined in a heart, underneath surrounded by another heart is the inscription - Charles William McCarthy, born Fethard, 1848, died Sydney Australia, 1919.
It appears from the McCarthy Headstone that Charles McCarthy may have brought his father to live with him in Sydney, as an inscription reads “John McCarthy, died Sydney, Australia, September 1888 and whose embalmed body was interred here, November 1888.

FETHARD FF CANDIDATES ANNOUNCED
The three Fianna Fail nominations to run for South Tipperary County Council in the local elections for the Fethard electoral area next year were announced recently. Two of the present sitting councillors namely Susan Meagher from Ballingarry and Fianna Fail Vice President Pat O'Meara from The Commons were nominated to run again.
However, the third nomination went to Sylvia Cooney Sheehan who is a Town Councillor and is the proprietor of a hair salon in Carrick on Suir. It is believed that seven people in total were in contention for the nominations including Walter Maloney, Joe Kane, Patsy Murphy and present councillor Denis Bourke.
Speaking recently Councillor Cooney Sheehan claimed that she is looking forward to the challenge. She claimed that she cannot believe that she was so successful and that the support that she received was just tremendous. She claimed that it would be a tough haul. However she claimed that she had twelve months to work on her campaign and would do her level best to take a seat in the Fethard electoral area.

FETHARD JUVENILE GAA CLUB
Our under-12s played their semi-final hurling match against Ballybacon/Grange on Saturday last in Kilsheelan and were extremely unfortunate to be beaten. These young players did their club proud and tried their very best to overcome the lead that Ballybacon had taken in the first half.
These young players are a credit to their club and all credit is due to Liam, Ian, Martin and Jim, the hard work and effort that have gone into these young players is evident and it is a shame that having won 6 out of 6 matches they had to loose out in the semi-final. The club would like to thank all the people that made the journey to show their support.
The under-14s are still on track for their championship bid, they are at home to Kilsheelan on Thursday evening in the GAA pitch at 7pm and we wish them the best of luck.
