on 23rd August. L to R: Joe Kenny, Mary Hanrahan, Pat Looby, Diana Stokes, Terry Cunningham, Dóirín Saurus and Tim Robinson.

Plans for this year's third annual Medieval Festival, on Sunday 23rd August, are now taking shape, part-funded by the Heritage Council and supported by South Tipperary County Council. The festival is part of South Tipperary's Heritage Week activity and the County Museum are also giving great support.

The Medieval Festival committee are sticking to the successful formula of the past two years and are hoping for good weather. A parade, with many in medieval costume, will be led by a pack of Irish Wolfhounds, which created such a stir last year when they led the colourful pageant.
In the coming weeks there may be an opportunity for those who are handy with the needle to make their own medieval outfit and a number of sample costumes are being made up at present to show how it is done. The same bazaar-type atmosphere will be created in The Valley, with food stalls, craft workers, archery, knights in shining armour and perhaps even a ‘medieval rat chase’ could ensue.

The organising committee have a few new ideas of a medieval nature in mind, so if club members, of the various clubs in the parish, would like to run a stall or an event on the day then they should get in touch, at festival@fethard.com and see how to add to the fun and hopefully make a few euro for their club as well.

Hunting News
The Tipperary Foxhounds held their annual Puppy Show, at The Kennels, Tullamaine, on Saturday last, 11th July. Huntsman, Derry Donegan presented an excellent selection of twenty-five and a-half couple of young hounds in both quantity and quality. Which certainly made the task of judges, Mr Joseph Callan MFH, joint master of the Louth Foxhounds and Mr William Bryer, huntsman of the Limericks, a most difficult one. After much careful consideration they selected the following winners.

Dog Hounds: 1st ‘Captain’, walked by Jimmy Kelly; 2nd ‘Darius’, walked by John Farrell; and 3rd ‘Clancy’, walked by Liam Clancy.
Bitches: 1st ‘Credit’, walked by Colin Barrett; 2nd ‘Riddle’, walked by Ned Tierney; and 3rd ‘Candle’, walked by Padraig Kennedy.
Champion: ‘Captain’.

Best Working Hound Last Season: ‘Crackshot’, walked by Ned Tierney.
The old hunting axiom, ‘Good sportsmen and women don’t mind the weather’, was well borne out by the very large attendance, aged from two to eighty-two, in atrocious weather conditions.

Presenting the prizes, Hunt Chairman, Padraig Kennedy, thanked the puppy walkers and land-owners without whose co-operation hunting could just not carry on. He also paid tribute to the judges and to Derry and Sam on their excellent work in the kennels. The afternoon concluded with the usual sumptuous refreshments, provided by the ladies committee.

A host of top Irish bands and musicians are visiting Fethard in the coming weeks. Moonshine, the band formed by ex Planxty and Sweeneys Men member, Johnny Moynihan play the Backroom Session in McCarthy’s this Friday night.

Carmina, an English band with strong Celtic connections, play a concert by the Town Wall behind McCarthy’s on Thursday 30th July. Carmina’s albums have been produced by Donal Lunny and feature Donal and Richie Buckley as guest musicians on their recordings.

They have an unusual link with Fethard. Rob King, one of the founder members, was enjoying great success with the band over a decade ago and their single, ‘Red River Valley Girl’ was getting huge airplay in Ireland and England, when all of a sudden, their record company went bust, leaving the band high and dry. Rob just sat into his car with his dog and drove out of Dublin and at some point he turned off the main road and ended up in Fethard. He found a B&B down by the Clashawley and set up camp there for a few days, walking the hills and mountains by day and having a few pints by night. He got his head clear and then returned to Dublin, where he picked up the pieces of his life.

He and his band are touring Ireland this summer and so they decided to return to Fethard where the band was salvaged. The band are currently riding on a high having been signed to Peter Gabriel’s record label and have also secured a place on the Womad Festival bill. Tickets are €10 and the proceeds of this concert are being donated to Alice Leahy’s Trust Charity.

The Medieval Festival on 22nd and 23rd August hosts three of Irelands most popular acts. Paul Brady plays behind McCarthy’s by the Town Wall on Saturday 22nd August, the Lee Valley String band are playing by the Town Wall on Sunday 23rd in the afternoon and Philip Donnelly plays that night. You can check out all these bands on their websites and go on to their MySpace sites to hear what they sound like.

Juvenile GAA Club
The Under 14s had a great win in the second match of their championship bid, away to Ballylooby, on last Thursday. They were seven points down at half-time and came back with determination winning by 4 points. Well done lads and best of luck in the next match (details at training). Well done to Adam Fitzgerald and Jody Sheehan who travelled to Dr. Norris Park on Saturday morning of last week to partake in the celebrations to commemorate 125 years of the GAA. They played three hurling matches in the Tipp colours, drawing one and winning two of the games. Thanks to Tommy Sheehan for travelling and overseeing the enjoyable day.

We would take this opportunity to remind everyone of our Golf Classic on 15th August. Please support this very worthy cause for the juveniles of Fethard. Committee members will be calling door-to-door in the coming weeks selling raffle tickets, they are priced at €5 each. 1st Prize, LCD TV; 2nd Prize, week-end away for two; 3rd prize, €150 voucher for GAA Shop, Thurles.

Fethard Scout Notes
Fethard cubs and scouts spent a weekend in Srahan, Co. Laois, from 19th to 21st June, with cubs learning new skills, including tent pitching and cooking, helped by the scouts and leaders. Cubs also learned about fire-lighting using flint, and Latvian-fire making and cooking. They also learned how to make their own mugs from coconuts.

Scouts took part in a Hike on the Sleivebloom Mountains lead by Philip O’Donnell and assisted by Dermot Culligan. All in all a great weekend and many thanks to leaders, Philip, Dermot, Lofty and John Walsh. Also to Sean Quigley who brought all our equipment to and from Srahan.

Recently Fethard town was visited by a Scout Group from Germany, having walked from Rosslare and heading to Mount Melleray they needed to rest. A quick phone call to Rosemary Ponsonby and they acquired a beautiful spot by the river in Grove Estate. Their first activity was a swim in the river, then set up camp and cook a meal. Having intended only staying one night they stayed two, really appreciating the peaceful location and hospitality received from Rosemary and Harry.

On their behalf we say many, many thanks to Rosemary and Harry, as always they are so generous.
Fethard Scouts are off on Saturday 18th July for two weeks to Co Wexford and hoping for some fine weather please God.

Fethard GAA Club
On Sunday, 19th July, Fethard take on Knockmealdown Gaels in Under 21 B Hurling in Monroe at 1.45pm. This game, our last chance for 2009, is scheduled before the Senior Hurling semifinal, between Killenaule and Ballybacon/Grange. Our South Senior Football qualifier against Ardfinnan is down for decider the following weekend. Our minor hurlers will be very active during August with the All Ireland minor football and minor hurling quarterfinals fixed for the weekends of 25th July and 2nd August respectively.

Our Lotto Jackpot was not won. The numbers drawn were 11,16, 22, and 28. There were two ‘Match Threes’, Craig Barry (Merrys, Clonmel) and Katie O’Keeffe (39 Carrigeen, Clonmel), who won €75 each. The €50 Lucky Dip was won by Mike Burke (Red City, Fethard). Thanks to AIB for sponsoring the tickets.

The Club offers it sincere condolences to the Walsh Family, Kilnockin Road, on the death of Gene, our reliable bus provider and driver for the past thirty years. Go ndeana Dia trocaire orthu

Dinny Walsh with his dog 'Jessy' at Killusty Dog Show 2009

In contrast to more recent times, Killusty Show 2009 finished in most brilliant sunshine. These conditions gave just the right atmosphere for both the Dog Show and Fancy Dress attractions to be seen at their very best. As a result, the standard was higher than ever in both the Dog Show and the Fancy Dress. There had been a great deal of effort put into preparation and it certainly showed. Entries for the Dog Show were up by a considerable number and there were more and more imaginative Fancy Dress competitors than ever. Mrs Janet Barbour had returned from England to judge the dogs and was delighted by the turnout and Rita Walsh was innovative in her awards for the many and varied entrants in the Fancy Dress. They were both very complimentary as to the standard of entry. Dog Show Results:
