Congratulations to Dylan Fitzgerald and Aaron Conran on representing Tipperary in under-15 and under-14 hurling. Aaron was a member of the under-15 team that recently won a Munster title and Dylan was a member of the under-14 county team that unfortunately lost by a point to Cork in the All-Ireland semifinal. Well done to both these young men on their great achievement representing club and county.
Social Dancing at Fethard Ballroom
Social Dancing classes begin at Fethard Ballroom on Thursday night 18th September and will continue until April 2009. Young and old are welcome to come along. Contact any of the Ballroom committee for further details or drop in on the night.
Fethard & Killusty Community Council
The next meeting of Fethard & Killusty Community Council will take place on Tuesday 16th September at 8.30pm in the Tirry Community Centre.
Renewal of Gun Licenses
Holders of gun licenses are reminded that renewals were due on 31st July and those who haven’t done so are advised to do so immediately. Owners can call personally to the local Garda Station or post their completed renewal forms and fees.
Declan Allen fights in Manchester

Declan Allen of Fethard represented Courage Muay Thai and Ireland at a Muay Thai Tournament held in Manchester on the 31st August. Declan travelled with a team of five competitors, Erik Hehir, David Hennessey, James O'Connell and Sean Long from Courage Muay Thai with Head Coach, Walter Scott. He fought in a 67kg match against Sean Prohet of Spartan Gym, Middleton, and won decisively. Sean was the taller of the two and Declan fought intelligently keeping his distance, delivering swift kicks and hand combinations while not letting his opponent use his height advantage in the clinch. As this was Declan's third fight he did wear a chest protector but for his next fight he will enter the ring with no chest protection and compete in a pro/am bout. Erik and David took part in exhibition bouts while Sean and James won their pro/am matches. Thanks to everyone who sponsored the lads.
John ‘Buddy’ Sayers
 At Buddy Sayers’ funeral Mass in St. John the Baptist Church, Andover, Mr Gerald Balding, with whose family Buddy had worked for 58 years paid tribute to Buddy as a friend and employee in a most eloquent fashion.
“Bud came to work for my father from Fethard, Co. Tipperary, where he had worked with Larry Keating. One of natures gentlemen, a consumate horseman, and no better friend, I can only hope that the near sixty years of his life he spent working for and with the Balding family was as much pleasure for him as it was for us. He came first to Bishop’s Cannings, from here we moved to Weyhill where my father trained. Bud, with Bill Palmer, Owen McNally and later Ron Sheather and Clive Bailey formed a formidable team that formed the backbone of the Fyfield team when we all moved back there in the early sixties.
On my fathers death, I took over the training licence in 1957, having two seasons at Weyhill followed by a season at Park House, Chadpington before coming to Fyefield. During this period Bud served a thorough apprenticeship with Jerry Hamilton, a real old-fashioned head lad, and Bert Boddy, experiences which were to stand him in good stead for his years of stewardship at Fyfield. Bud and I came of age with a vengence once we moved to Fyfield where Bud became head lad, never having less than fifty to sixty horses to worry about and campaign, and working in the unique and certainly eccentric surroundings that was Fyfield. Horses came and horses went, owners came and owners went, staff came and staff went but throughout Bud – the pivot – was ever constant. He had total charge of his guard and his horses, and all this achieved in Buds unmistakable style, with charm, patience and expertise. He was ‘The Man’.
Bud was responsible for the well being of a show of good horses, too many to mention, but to his eternal credit every horse got his full attention. The same applied to all the human element included with Fyfield jockeys, owners, embryo trainers, office organisers, staff all got his full attention and help if needed. Neither the success of Fyfield or the Fyfield experience could have worked without Bud and those that came under his spell will never forget him. Fyfield was as much Bud as anyone and on his retirement, as head lad. his achievements in racing were justifiably recognised by his peers, in receiving the award of Stable Man of his era in 1995. This did not lead to a cosy retirement as he took on a totally different role in looking after the Turf Gallops at Kingston on which he had ridden in his youth. He was as meticulous in the care of his turf as he had been of his beloved horses and in fact he was at work on them only five days befor he died.
I could have named horses in profusion and people in abundance. If I had, we would be here until tomorrow, so let us all take pleasure in and wonder at the man who was Bud, remembering all the good times and stories he gave us.

Fethard GAA Club News
Sunday next sees Fethard aiming to win their 29th South Senior Football title, the last won in 2005, when they take on old rivals of recent years Moyle Rovers in Cahir at 4.30pm. We wish the team the best of luck. By the time you read this the Minor B Hurlers should have played their semifinal.
Our Lotto Jackpot was not won this week. The numbers drawn were 6, 14, 26 and 32. Fethard Bridge Club results
The results of Fethard Bridge Club game held on Wednesday 21st May (the last game before the summer break) were:

The new bridge season commenced on 10th September. We hope to see all our members back over the next couple of weeks. On 24th September we will be playing for sponsored prizes, on 1st October we play for the Free Sub Gross and on 8th October for the Free Sub Nett.
On Thursday, 18th September, Fethard Bridge club will host a coffee morning as part of the National Coffee Morning in aid of Hospice. This is being organised by Nell Broderick who will be looking for volunteers from the club to help her on the day. Killusty Pony Show AGM
The annual general meeting of Killusty Pony Show will be held in the Tirry Centre, Fethard, at 8pm on Friday 12th September. This meeting will celebrate 45 years of successful shows in Killusty. Trust Golf Classic this weekend
The Frank Purcell Memorial Golf Classic in aid of Trust will takes place this weekend on Friday 12th and Saturday 13th September at Slievenamon Golf Club. This event is now in its 6th year and has raised over €100,000 for the Trust charity, which was founded 30 years ago by Fethard’s Alice Leahy. The competition will run over two days in Slievenamon Golf Club and the prizes will be presented at a Barbecue in McCarthy’s in Fethard on Saturday night with music provided by the legendary Philip Donnelly and his band Foul Play. Admission to the Barbecue is €10.

More than one Youth Garda needed!
Local TD Tom Hayes has revealed that South Tipperary as a whole only has one Juvenile Liaison Officer, with that officer based in Clonmel.
"Out of the 101 Juvenile Liaison Officers nationally, South Tipperary only has one, with that person based in Clonmel. The towns in South Tipperary have seen increased violence, intimidation, and gangs in recent years, and one member of staff for Clonmel is simply not enough, let alone one member for the whole constituency," Deputy Hayes said.
"Juvenile Liaison Officers essentially work with those who are most at risk of falling into anti-social behaviour. They work with those who already been selected to work on the programme, and who need assistance to keep out of gangs. One for the vast and spread out area of South Tipperary is not good enough and means that staff are spread too thinly. The Minister indicated that the Gardai are planning more staff in this area in the next eighteen months and I will be lobbying to ensure that South Tipperary sees its fair share of those resources," Deputy Hayes commented.
