Young people of Fethard . . . tell us what you want!
All Fethard teenagers from 13 years to 17 years are invited to attend an informal meeting at 4pm on Tuesday 21st June in the Tirry Community Centre to discuss their views on what facilities or services they would like in Fethard to improve their quality of life. The meeting will be facilitated by two students of Tipperary Institute as part of the Fethard & Killusty Community Council’s Feasibility Study to identify the best community use and development of the Convent Hall and riverside area.

The students will also interview and listen to the views of senior pupils from St Patrick’s Boys National School and Nano Nagle National School on Monday and Tuesday. We are very grateful for the co-operation from both Fethard National schools in this project and for the assistance and help from the staff of Tipperary Institute who have offered and provided their expertise and time voluntary.

This is a great opportunity for young people to get involved and help make Fethard change in the right direction, identify problem areas and provide needed facilities for the youth.

Fethard & Killusty Community Council
The next meeting of Fethard & Killusty Community Council will take place on Tuesday night 21st June at 8pm.

Fethard Athletic Club
Fethard Athletic Club will hold its annual sports evening in the Community Field on Wednesday 22nd June at 6.30pm sharp. Entry fee is €2 per child.

Simply the Best!
Two members of a team of four sheep shearers from Australia caused somewhat of a sensation in local farming circles while on a working visit to Fethard. The two Aussies sheared 120 ewes on a local farm in just over two hours. That is an average of just over two minutes per large ewe. The speed of which these guys operated had to be seen to be believed.

Local Winner
Congratulations to Dick O’Brien, Main Street, on his success at Kinsale Point-to-Point on the Bank Holiday weekend. Dick’s ‘Delshannon’ won the 5-Years Old Maiden Mares Race on the Saturday of the two-day, end of the Point-to-Point season’s final meeting.

Death of Kitty Croke
With regret we announce the recent death in England of Mrs Kitty Croke, formerly Kitty Tobin of Farranaleen. Another of Fethard’s very long time emigrants, Kitty and her late husband, Bill Croke, Derryluskin, though over 70 years in England, never forgot their Fethard roots and love of their native place. Keeping in touch with local current affairs through the Nationalist, which they never missed weekly, and the parish annual Emigrants’ Newsletter. Bill and Kitty were regular annual visitors to Fethard up to a few short years ago, where they loved to meet old friends and neighbours and talk of times long gone. Two lovely people, they both will be sadly missed by relatives and friends. Kitty Croke was interred in England on 7th June.

Another long time Emigrant dies
The death has also occurred in England recently of Ms Margaret Foster, formerly Peggy Heffernan, Congress Terrace, Fethard. Peggy was another of Fethard’s long time Fethard emigrants.
The deaths of many of our Fethard emigrants living in England, especially during the past two years, reminds us time and again of the terrible toll of emigration from our town in the forties and fifties, and even earlier.
Many of our native Fethard people forced to emigrate from Ireland are now being called home and have died, and been interred far from their native Tipperary. They should not be forgotten, especially where it matters most.

Thursday 9th June proved to be a very special day in the lives of the pupils and staff of St. Patrick’s School, Fethard. It was the first time the school had participated in and won a schools hurling final.

The venue was Semple Stadium where the boys experienced the excitement of being in number one dressing room, racing through the tunnel out onto the field, a pre match puck around and photos. Supporters added to the occasion with their shouts of support and singing.

The first half of the match was evenly balanced, Fethard started well with a goal, However Upperchurch fought back well and scored a goal and two points. Fethard scored two more goals and another goal for Upperchurch meant that Fethard led by just one point at half time. Fethard dominated the second half scoring three goals and four points to a goal and two points.

After the match Christy Clancy, Chairman of Cumann na mBunscoil presented the plaque to the captain John Gartland who thanked his teammates, teachers, coach, supporters and the Upperchurch team. Many neutrals after the match commented on the hurling skills of the boys. Brian Healy, steady in goal also starred as a forward in the semi-final. The four backs Cathal Hurley, Ger Maher, Garreth Lawrence and Brian Delahunty marked tightly and showed great ground hurling skills. Ronan Fitzgerald and John Gartland contributed greatly from midfield with fine scores and good ball into the forwards. The very lively forwards of David Gartland, Ciaran O’Meara and Dylan Fitzgerald all put their mark on the scoresheet. The four subs Eoin Walsh, Vincent Lawrence, Andrew Maher and Gerard Gorey were all introduced and contributed to the great victory.

Willie Ryan, their coach, can be very pleased with his efforts and commitment. The twice-weekly training sessions since last January all paid off last Thursday in Semple Stadium.

Team: Brian Healy, Cathal Hurley, Ger Maher, Garreth Lawrence, Brian Delahunty, Ronan Fitzgerald (1-3), John Gartland (1-0), David Gartland (2-0), Ciaran O’Meara (2-0), Dylan Fitzgerald (0-1). Subs: Eoin Walsh, Vincent Lawrence, Andrew Maher and Gerard Gorey.

Manfred Naundorf remembered

Giuliana Naundorf made the presentation of the ‘Manfred Naundorf Perpetual Trophy’ to the winners, Junior Tipperary team. L to R: Karl Norris, Giuliana Naundorf, Desmond Phelan (club treasurer), Shane Norris and Anthony Sweeney.

In May this year, a Polocrosse tournament was held at Davern’s Equestrian Centre in memory of the late Manfred Naundorf who passed away in September 2003. Manfred, late of Killusty, was a keen supported of the Polocrosse game, and his wife, Giuliana, returned to Ireland to present the ‘Manfred Naundorf Perpetual Trophy’ to the local club. The trophy will be presented to the winners of the Junior Grades, in order to encourage up and coming talent in the game.

This year’s winners of the event were Karl Norris, Shane Harris and Anthony Sweeney of the Tipperary Juniors Team. Giuliana Naundorf made the presentation of the ‘Manfred Naundorf Perpetual Trophy’ to the winners, and in return, received a presentation from Noel Davern, Davern’s Equestrian Centre, as a token of thanks.

L to R: Noel Davern, Giuliana Naundorf, Mark Davern and Desmond Phelan.

The next tournament at Davern’s Equestrian Centre will take place on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th June. This tournament will have some classic games of Juniors and Under-18s representing Ireland and England this year. All spectators are welcome and admission is free. Sayers Family Information follow-up
The Sayers family on which Judith Sayers of Gloucestershire, England, is seeking information is one of Fethard’s oldest families. The Henry Baker Sayers mentioned by her as having several businesses in the town, had a general shop, hardware etc., at Main Street, subsequently Fennellys, then Scully’s and now the Fethard Arms.

Ms Carrie Sayers of Main Street married a Mr Thompson, Green Farm, Fethard, and Carrie Thompson-Sayers would have been the last of the Sayers family of Main Street.

Another branch of the Sayers family resided on the opposite side of Main Street and these were a very well-known family in Tipperary, and indeed even further afield legal circles. Probably the best-known lawyer amongst them was Hugh Tom Sayers. They intermarried with the Hazletts who were another well-known family of the era and resided in Shaftsbury House, which is now the Post Office.

The Sayers family owned property on Main Street from the Post Office to where Mrs Ahearne now resides. This branch of the Sayers family on leaving Fethard, relocated to Carlow. They have a burial vault in Holy Trinity Church of Ireland, Fethard, at the rear of O’Sullivan’s. The last interment of a member of the Carlow Sayers family took place there some 20 years ago. There are no descendants of the Main Street branch of the Sayers family now residing in Fethard.

By and extraordinary coincidence, Judy Sayers, daughter of the late Harry and Margaret Sayers, St. Patrick’s Place, now residing in England, gave a long term of employment with the Delmege family at Green Farm, formerly the residence of Carrie Thompson-Sayers.

We home the above information is of some advantage to Judith Sayers. (E.A.N.)

Augustinian Abbey 700 Celebrations
On Wednesday 29th June a special Concelebrated Mass will take place at 6pm in the Abbey. This Mass is held in conjunction with the Chapter of the Irish Province of the Augustinian Order, which is being held in Limerick from 27th June to 1st July.

At the time of the Confederation of Kilkenny, when Catholics were given a brief "breathing space" from persecution, the Augustinians were able to hold their provincial chapters in Fethard in 1643, 1646 and 1649. The Provincial superior actually lived in Fethard from 1646 to 1649.

The chapter of 2005 will be presided over by the V. Rev. Robert Prevost (USA), who is the 96th Prior General of the Augustinian Order. On the evening of 29th June at least 60 Chapter fathers will arrive in Fethard to concelebrate Mass in the Abbey in its centenary year.

This visit was organised long before our prior, Fr Gerry Horan (right), was chosen to be Provincial of the Irish Province. As one of the first acts at the new Chapter, Rev. Fr Prevost will confirm Fr. Gerry as the next Provincial, on 27th June.

To accord Fr. Gerry a Fethard "comhgáirdeachas" and to extend a "Céad Míle Fáilte" to his fellow Augustinians we are asking all friends of The Abbey, from Fethard and surrounding parishes, to come to this historic and celebratory Mass at 6pm on 29th June.

Are they all “Off their tree?”
“Get down from that tree or you will break the branches?” was the request made by a prominent civic-minded lady member of Fethard’s Tidy Town’s Committee, to some young boys playing ‘Tarzan’ in one of Fethard’s ornamental trees.

“You can’t make us!” was the immediate reply.

This gives an example of the lack of respect shown to elders and the lack of regard for rules or laws shown by many in today’s world. The younger generation are not the only ones at fault. For instance, what about the number of car drivers who ignore completely the speed limit on the Lisronagh straight or on the Fethard-Killenaule road. Also the number of drivers who drive while using their mobile phones.

Maybe the old proverb, “What the old cock crows, the young cock will answer”, is not so far off the mark. The number of prosecutions for drink driving is also on the increase in spite of an extensive advertising campaign to drivers not to do so. Where do we go from here?
