Duncan looking for his Fethard roots

RTE presenter Duncan Stewart photographed with Winnie Moran, Drumdeel, Fethard, who's house will be featured on Duncan's top rating "About The House" programme which will be broadcast on RTÉ 1 at 8.30pm on Tuesday 14th September. Duncan's grandmother, Caherine (Kenny) Fawsitt was from Fethard.

RTE presenter Duncan Stewart is currently in the Fethard area working on the new series of his top rating "About The House" programme. Duncan will feature the renovations of Alphie and Winnie Moran’s house at Drumdeel, Fethard, on his programme, which will be broadcast on RTÉ 1 at 8.30pm on Tuesday 14th September.

While visiting Fethard, Duncan had another mission — to find out more about his ancestors who came from Fethard. Winnie introduced Duncan to the Kenny family, Rocklow Road, where he was shown photographs of his grandmother Catherine (Kenny) Fawsitt, who came from The Green, Fethard. Actually the stained glass window on the right hand side of Holy Trinity Parish Church is dedicated to his grandmother. Catherine Kenny married Judge Diarmuid Fawsitt and they had eleven children.

Duncan, looking at his grandparent’s family photograph, had great fun asking if we could pick out his mother, Sheila, from the photograph. As it transpired, his mother was a nun, at least in the photograph, and of course before she was married. He went on to explain that his mother, before she married, was an actress in Hollywood, she broke her contract and joined a religious order which she later left and returned to Ireland.

After she married, the family lived for a while outside Lisronagh (at the junction from the Clonmel Road to the back road to Fethard). Duncan believes his mother was one of the founder members of Clonmel Dramatic Society and would be very anxious to find out any more information of her time in Lisronagh and Clonmel. If anyone has information, please let us know and we can pass on the information on his next visit to the area.

George Plant and his family
Nollaig O Gadhra, author, journalist, lecturer, broadcaster and president of Conradh na Gaeilge, will speak for the Fethard Historical Society on the subject, “George Plant and his family”, in the Abymill Theatre on Friday 17th September at 8.30pm. The talk will include a tape recording of George’s sister, Lily Plant, whom Nollaig O Gadhra interviewed shortly before she died in 1992. A question and answer session will follow the talk. Admission is €3.

George Plant (photographed right) was born in St. Johnstown, Fethard, 100 years ago on the 5th January 1904. Following an incident, during which the teenage George and his brother were ill-treated by the RIC, they joined the local branch of Fianna Éireann. During the Civil War George was a member of the Third Tipperary Brigade and after the Civil War he emigrated to Canada, returning to Ireland in the late 1930s when he again became active in the IRA. In 1942 he was executed by the State in Portlaoise Prison under controversial circumstances. His body was not returned to his family but was buried in the grounds of Portlaoise Prison. Six years later, on a change of government, his remains were exhumed and brought to St. Mary’s Church in Clonmel. People lined the streets as the cortège left Clonmel for the Fethard Road and for the re-interment in St. Johnstown, Fethard, where a huge concourse of people were present to pay their final respects. A few years later his colleagues erected a fitting memorial over his grave, where Republicans foregather each Easter Sunday to pay tribute.

The speaker, Nollaig O'Gadhra, is undoubtedly the country's most prolific writer in Irish. With several books on a wide range of subjects - history, politics, biographies, etc., to his credit, he is also an indefatigable journalist, articles and commentaries by him appearing regularly in Irish language publications, as well as contributions in English in several Irish and foreign newspapers and journals.

Broadband coverage Information
Fethard & Killusty Community Council have entered a partnership with Eircom and applied for funding from the Department of Communications, Marine & Natural Resources under the recently announced Group Broadband Scheme. The Fethard Exchange currently covers Fethard and a large adjoining area that takes in Coleman, Knockbritt, Moyglass, Coolmore, Cloneen, Killusty and out as far as Slievenamon Golf Club. Broadband should be available to all these areas depending on the quality of the carrier lines on the borderline areas.

We currently need approximately 100 ‘expressions of interest’ from businesses and residential customers living in this area who are interested in getting broadband. These ‘expressions of interest’ forms can be downloaded here or by contacting the Fethard Community Office at Barrack Street, Fethard. Tel: 052 31000.

Broadband Internet is a vital tool for modern businesses and communities. The key features are: Download speeds up to 10 times faster than dial-up – and potentially as much as 40 times faster; Always-on service — no more dial-up and wait for service; Flat fee per month, starting at €40 including VAT per month and no call charges on top; You or others in the house/business can make calls and surf the internet at the same time, without the need for a separate phone line.

First Steps Playgroup Reopened
First Steps Playgroup, situated upstairs in the Tirry Centre, Barrack Street, has now re-opened for the new school year. Parents wishing to send their children are invited to call in at any time or phone Patricia Fitzgerald on Tel: 086 1580897 or 052 32164 who will answer any queries that you may have.

Still They Come
A recent visitor to Fethard was 90-year-old John Heffernan from England. Accompanied by his son, Mr Heffernan, who was born in Burke Street, left Fethard 82 year ago when only 8 years of age. He stated that it was his ambition to pay one return visit to his native town before he died. Was it the Greek scholar Kasasé who said, “The fields and streets in which you grow up, there you will always live and there you will die.”

Two Local Winners
Congratulations to our two lucky local winners last weekend. Jim Sayers was very well pleased with his €17,500 win on RTE’s ‘Fame and Fortune’ game show programme on Saturday night last. Tommy Slattery, The Green, now resident in Jossestown, was the lucky winner of a new car in the September monthly draw run by Tipperary GAA County Board.

Feathered Friends
Further to our piece on the Clashawley Egrets, we have learned that the birds were first noticed in Ireland in 1956. The numbers were very few and they first nested here in 1997. They have bred successfully every year since in Counties Wexford, Waterford and Cork. The very mild winters of the past few years are primarily responsible for their increase.

With the Corncrake gone, the Cuckoo, Yellowhammer and Skylark almost gone, would it not be wonderful if the Egret would nest locally. Here’s a renewed appeal for all to respect the arrival of our African visitors.

Back To School

Back to school at Nano Nagle Primary School Fethard were L to R: Orla Lawrence, Kelly Fox and Aisha Tobin.

Wednesday 1st September was ‘Back to School’ for most boys and girls in the Fethard area. Rocklow Road was busy with young apprehensive faces about to start school for the first time at Nano Nagle Primary School. Fortunately, all were very calm and relaxed as they entered the school grounds, although some were clutching the hands of older siblings for comfort and reassurance. We would like to welcome two new teachers to Nano Nagle School, Miss Skehan and Miss Brady, who started this year and already are a big hit with the pupils. We would also like to congratulate Mrs Treacy who retired as vice-principal at Nano Nagle School to take up her new position as principal of St. Patrick’s Boys National School, Fethard.

Fethard GAA News
The county senior football quarterfinal took place last Saturday 4th September in New Inn, resulting in a great come back for Fethard to win on a scoreline Fethard 0-10 (0-2), Aherlow 0-8 (0-7), to book our place in the county semifinal against Moyle Rovers on weekending 3rd October.  Our main concern on Saturday last was our team’s first half display, as was in the south final, with possession gained from kick-outs down to a minimum and a lack of scoring ability from play.  We only scored two points from play and county titles will not be won on this type of form.  We have a month to rectify the situation which I’m sure we can.  The team was: Paul Fitzgerald, Willie Morrissey, Michael Quinlan, Alan Phelan, Tomas Keane, Cian Maher, Michael Aherne, Aiden Fitzgerald, P J Aherne, Michael Dillon 0-2f, Miceál Spillane, John P Looby 0-1, Carl Maher 0-2f, Tom Anglim, Kenneth O’Donnell 0-1.  Subs were: Brian Coen 0-2f, Nicky Murphy, Eoin Doyle, Conor McCarthy 0-2f, for Tomas Keane, Alan Phelan, Tom Anglim, Carl Maher.  Other subs: Ronan Maher, Kenneth Byrne, Stephen O’Donnell, Brian Burke, Brendan Brett, Damien Byrne, Jamie McCormack and Shane Walsh.

The intermediate hurling semifinal takes place on weekending 19th September.

Our Lotto Jackpot of €5,900 was not won.  We had three ‘match three’ winners who received €50 each: Con Doyle (Woodvale Walk), Liam Kelly (Ballingarry), and Bee Gould (Claremore).  The €50 Lucky Dip winner was Dick Fitzgerald (56 St Pats Place). The numbers drawn at McCarthys were 9, 19, 20 and 22.
Well done to our juvenile under-14 B hurling team who have now qualified for the south final against Killenaule.

Died Recently
We record the death of Mrs Patricia Lysaght, Bawnbrack, Killenaule, who died on Sunday 5th September. Requiem Mass took place at 12 noon on Wednesday 8th September at St. Mary's Church, Killenaule, followed by burial at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Clonmel.

Juvenile GAA Club
Well done and congratulations to the u/14 hurlers who have made it through to the south county final.  We were away to Mullinahone on Sunday afternoon of last week in Ballingarry and came away with a convincing win over Mullinahone to book a place in the final against Killenaule.

The lads took control from the start of the game and credit must be given to every player on this team for the effort and determination they showed throughout the whole match.  It was great to see them playing as a team and well done to Liam, Ian, Martin and Jim for bringing the lads this far, we wish them every success, the final score stood at, Fethard 3-10 - Mullinahone 0-05.  They meet Killenaule in the final this weekend coming and players will be notified of time and venue.

Please note that football training for under-8s and under-10s will re-commence on this Saturday coming in the GAA field at 3pm.

The GAA Summer Camp was a great success this year with over seventy boys and girls attending.  A great time was had by all.
