FETHARD COMMUNITY PLAYGROUP
Fethard Community Playgroup has now reopened from 9.30am to 12.30 from Monday to Friday. The fee per child per session is €4 and enrolments are now welcome. Parents are requested to pay for their child’s days even if unable to attend for any reason as annual running costs and fees are calculated on a full attendance. A limited number of places are available so if your child is missing for more than two weeks and no payment has been made, your child’s place will be given to the next child on the waiting list. Please let us know in advance if your child will be unavailable to attend for a prolonged period so we can allocate the place temporarily to another child. We hope your child will enjoy their time in our playgroup and if you need further information please telephone 052 32316 or call upstairs to the Health Centre at Rocklow Road.

HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Fethard Historical Society would like to remind people that from Sunday 1st September to Sunday 8th September is Heritage Week and most Duchas castles, gardens and parks will have free access for the week. More detailed information is available from The Tirry Community Office in Barrack Street. Tel: 053 31000.
Some members of the Fethard Historical Society plan to travel to Kilkenny Castle on Sunday 8th September to avail of the free special program of events. People to make their own travel arrangements.

FETHARD & KILLUSTY COMMUNITY COUNCIL
The next meeting of Fethard & Killusty Community Council will take place on Tuesday 10th September at 8.30pm in the Tirry Community Centre.

YE BOYS IN BLUE
“They will not do it!”, “At least a good display will do!”, were some of the opinions being expressed by some long-time Fethard football supporters prior to last Sunday’s South Tipperary Senior Football Final against Moyle Rovers.
“Oh ye of little faith!”
Putting their lack-lustre displays against Ardfinnan and Cahir well behind them, Fethard at last discovered their 2001 form and deservingly beat hot favourites Moyle Rovers by a well-deserved 5-point margin. Playing against a stiff breeze and setting sun, Jimmy O’Meara’s ploy of adapting the role of sweeper between Fethard’s half and full back lines worked a dream and cut of the supply of ball to Rover’s ace marksman Declan Browne.

MARRIED RECENTLY
The wedding took place at Killusty Church on Friday 30th August of Patricia, daughter of Mr Dan and Mrs Bernie Morrissey, Cashel Road, Fethard, to Matt, son of Mr Michael and Mrs Monica Hennessey, Coleman.

CORPORATE CHALLENGE TRIATHLON
Corporate Challenge Triathlon - Raising Money for Charity
On Saturday, 7th September, Neilie Hall will compete in a triathlon at Farran Woods, Farran, Co. Cork. The triathlon involves a 800m swim, 25km cycle and 10km run. The triathlon has been organised by Musgraves Supervalue-Centra and the money raised will go to Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children and the Irish Cancer Society. Neilie is running on behalf of Centra, Fethard and anyone wishing to sponsor him can do so at Centra or by contacting Neilie himself.

FETHARD GAA CLUB
In Clonmel on Sunday 1st September we recorded our 27th Senior Football South Title, on a scoreline Fethard 0-13 (0-5), Moyle Rovers 0-8 (0-5). This team performance must go down as one off the best seen for a long time and keeps us in the running for the county championship, at the quarterfinal stage. The team was: Paul Fitzgerald, Michael Ahearne, Damien Byrne, Michael Quinlan (capt), Willie Morrissey 0-2, Cian Maher, Stephen O’Donnell, Aiden Fitzgerald 0-1, Kenneth Byrne, John Paul Looby 0-1, Willie O’Meara, Brian Coen, Karl Maher, Miceál Spillane 0-5, and Jimmy O’Meara. Subs used were: Glen Burke 0-2, and Thomas Anglim.
In Junior Hurling ‘B’, on Wednesday 28th August in Ned Hall Park, we recorded our first victory on a scoreline Fethard 3-6 (2-4), Fr Sheehys 2-7 (1-4). The team was: Stephen McCormack, Ian Kenrick, Peter Nolan, Philly Croke, Diarmuid Burke, Liam Treacy 0-2f, John Hanrahan, John Hurley 0-1, John Noonan 0-1, Paul McDonald, Garreth Byrne 2-0, Johnny Neville, Miceál McCormack, Miceál Sean McCormack 1-2, and Paddy Cooney.
On Wednesday 4th September in Cloneen, we play Grangemockler in Junior ‘B’ Football at 6.45pm. Our intermediate hurlers continue this week when they meet Carrick Davins.
Our lotto jackpot of€5,200 was not won. The numbers drawn were 2, 3, 8 and 21. We had three ‘match three’ winners: Bee Gould (Claremore), Geraldine McCarthy (Kerry St) and Mark Tynan (Barrack Street). Each received €50. Our €50 lucky dip winner was Larry Keogh (Curragloe, Carrick-on-Suir).

FETHARD BRIDGE CLUB
The new season of bridge commences on Wednesday 11th September at 7.30pm. As work on the Tirry Centre may not be completed by then, we will advise on a temporary venue if required. New members are welcome to come along and we look forward to seeing old and new members back on the 11th September.

FETHARD PLAYERS
The Fethard Players will hold a meeting in the Abymill Theatre on Monday 2nd September at 8pm. All are welcome.

GOLF CLASSIC GREAT SUCCESS
The Coolmore Stud sponsored Golf Classic in aid of the new extension to Fethard and District Day Care Centre held at Slievenamon Golf Club on 30th and 31st August was a great success with over 50 teams competing for the excellent prizes on offer. The main sponsors of the event were Coolmore Stud which was backed up by tremendous local sponsorship and support by entering teams, green sponsorship and tee sponsorship on the day. The winning team achieved 101 points which is now the Slievenamon Golf Club record to date.

The winners of third prize at 94 points, decided on the back nine holes, were Ted Cummins, Billy Healy, Jack Bergin and John Lacey. In fourth place, also on 94 points, were Michael Leahy, Tom O'Neill, Paul Boland and Billy Quirke. The 'nearest to pin' winner was John Queally at 2'6". The longest ladies drive winner was Catherine Morrissey and the gents winner was Joe Gleeson.

The winners of the draw were: 1st Prize €100 Voucher Easons - Arthur Daly, St. Patrick's Place, Fethard. 2nd Prize €75 Voucher for J's Restaurant - Noel Higgins, Dawn Foods, Fethard. 3rd Prize Dinner for Two at Hotel Minella Clonmel - Sheila Corbett, Roebucksland, Grove, Fethard.

The Fethard & Killusty Community Council would like to thank the staff of Slievenamon Golf Club, all those who entered teams, sponsored greens, tees and prizes, and those who helped in any way to make the Golf Classic such a success. The new extension should be ready and available for use in approximately two weeks time.

LEAVING CERT RESULTS
The town of Fethard was overjoyed with the great Leaving Cert results achieved by the students of Patrician Presentation Secondary School.

Above, left to right, are twins Paul and Michael Walsh who achieved an astonishing 1125 points between them in this years leaving cert. Paul will study Chemical Engineering in C.I.T. and Michael will study the same subject in U.C.D.

Left to right are Rebecca Carroll and Linda Corcoran. Rebecca received 555 points to study her first choice of Veterinary in U.C.D. Linda will study Medical Laboratory Science in C.I.T.

Above are pupils Jennifer Frewen and Peter Kenny. Jennifer also achieved an outstanding 565 points and will study Architecture at the Dublin Institute of Technology. Peter Kenny will study Applied Physics in University College Limerick.

In Clonmel on Sunday last we reached the south senior football final by defeating Cahir on a scoreline Fethard 1-6 (0-2), Cahir 0-7 (0-5). The team was: Paul Fitzgerald, Jimmy O’Meara, Michael Ahearne, Willie O’Meara 1-0, Glen Burke, Cian Maher, Stephen O’Donnell, Aiden Fitzgerald, Kenneth Byrne 0-1, John Paul Looby, Willie Morrissey, Brian Coen, Carl Maher 0-5 (4f), Micheál Spillane and Michael Dillon. Sub used was Damien Byrne (54 min).
On August 22nd in Clonmel we lost the minor ‘B’ hurling play-off on a scoreline Fethard 2-3 (2-1), Kilsheelan 1-10 (1-7). The team was: Keith Lawrence, Christy Doyle, Alan Burke, Mike Kelly, Gavin Ahearne, Shane Walsh 1-0, Michael Lawrence, Darren O’Meara, Jamie McCormack 0-3f, Ronan O’Meara, Ronan Maher 1-0, Owen Maher, Michael Dillon, Liam Frewen and Johnny Leahy. Subs used were James Curran and Johnny Leahy.
We had great difficulty in fielding a junior football ‘B’ team in Cahir on Saturday 24th August where we lost to Ballyporeen on a scoreline Fethard 0-5 (0-4), Ballyporeen 1-17 (1-9). We are very grateful to those who travelled. The team was: Paddy Cooney, Daniel Byrne, Peter Nolan, Diarmuid Burke, Kenneth Sheehan, Willie Quigley, John O’Meara, John Hanrahan 0-1, Garreth Byrne, M. J. Croke, David Flanagan, John Noonan 0-4f, Gerry Ahearne, John Fitzgerald and Owen Whyte.

GOLD, SILVER & BRONZE FOR JACQUI
At the European Masters Athletic Championships held at Postdam, Germany, Jacqui Stokes-Freyne has now added a silver medal in the 200 metres, to her already won gold in the long jump and bronze in the 100 metres. Jacqui would like to thank all those who sponsored her and those who intend sponsoring her, as she has to fund her own way at this level. She will now take a break from running and concentrate on rugby for the winter months and then start training for the World Championships in 2003.

THE WEDDING

On Saturday last, August 24th, Fethard came to a standstill at 6pm when hundreds turned up to watch the many celebrities arrive for the marriage of Katie Magnier, Coolmore Stud Farm, to David Wachman, in the Augustinian Abbey Fethard. The wedding attracted national media coverage and we've reprinted some of the articles on the site.

SMALL WORLD
Ms Sarah Crooks – Murphy, Burke Street, a native of New Zealand, had a most interesting enquiry recently from her mother in New Zealand. Sarah’s mother’s best friend, as a young girl, said she had a European pen friend called Ann O’Connell, Kilnockin, Fethard, Co. Tipperary. A bit of simple detective work figured out that her friend was Ann O’Donnell, now Ann Lynch, Kilnockin. Ann still has some of the correspondence and photographs from her New Zealand pen friend of almost 50 years ago and now hopes to renew old acquaintances. A small world it certainly is and what an extraordinary connection from 12,000 miles away.
