Fethard Students take up the challenge
Nano Nagle School Challenge
Alice Leahy, founder member of TRUST Charity, photographed with 6th Class pupils of Nano Nagle Primary School where she spoke on the homeless people in Ireland as part of their 'Challenge for Change' school project. The pupils made a donation of €500 to the TRUST Charity.

On 3rd March, Alice Leahy visited Nano Nagle National School, Fethard, at the invitation of the 6th Class girls, as part of their ‘Challenge to Change’ project. ‘Challenge to Change’ is run by the Presentation Sisters Education Office and encourages and supports its schools nationwide in researching and presenting projects on various subjects such as, injustice, poverty, racism, inequality and Third World issues. Having chosen ‘Homelessness’ as their topic this year, they were delighted to have Fethard woman Alice to talk to them on this subject.

Alice is co-founder and director of TRUST, which is a non-judgemental, befriending, social and health service for people who are homeless, in operation since 1975. She has a wealth of knowledge and experience in this area which she shared with the students and they in turn made a donation of €500 to TRUST. This money was raised through events such as Christmas Carol Singing, which was supported by the local community.

Nano Nagle National School is very grateful to Alice for her kindness in making time for them in her busy schedule and wish her well with her work. A display of the projects entered from all the different Presentation Schools takes place in Kilkenny on 23rd April, 2008.

Easter Bonanza for Connolly Family
It was certainly an exciting and happy Easter for Ned and Eileen Connolly, Garrinch, who received the news that their eldest son, Liam, had been promoted to the ranks of Inspector in the Garda Siochana. This was a tremendous achievement for Liam who joined the Gardai 17 years ago and held the post of Sergeant in Charge in Tramore for the past five years.

Liam played football for his local Fethard GAA Club and also played on the County Tipperary Football team before moving to Waterford. Liam also spent some time as secretary of Fethard & Killusty Community Council. All his friends in Fethard and surrounding areas send their congratulations to Liam and wish him well in his future career. There was a double celebration in the family when David Connolly, Liam’s son was selected on the Irish Under-16 Basketball team that will compete in the European Championships in Bosnia next August. David is part of a twelve-man Irish panel that will participate in a pre-championship tournament in Birmingham in May. Their other son, Evan, is captain of Waterford Under-14 Soccer team who will contest the Munster Finals on 6th April. Congratulations and best wishes to all.

Fethard Historical Society News
A lecture by Proinsias Ó Drisceoil entitled, “John O’Daly: Controversy and Traditional Learning in 19th Century Ireland”, will take place on Friday 25th April 2008 at 8.30pm in the Abymill Theatre. O’Daly, a contemporary of John O’Donovan and Eugene O’Curry, was an energetic but often controversial scholar and editor of early Irish manuscripts, and his contribution to the early study of Irish literature is meticulously researched and documented by Ó Drisceoil in “Seán Ó Dálaigh: Éigse agus Iomarbhá”, published by Cork University Press. Admission to the lecture is €4 and all are welcome.

Gerard Crotty, Cashel, is currently working on a booklet about the heraldry of Fethard, that he hopes to have ready for publication in the summer.

We are likewise happy to report that Michael O’Donnell, Owning, is nearing completion of his comprehensive “History of Fethard through the Ages”. Michael, too, is aiming to have his manuscript ready for publication later this year.

The Realm Plan and The Conservation & Management Plans for Fethard, under the aegis of the Heritage Council, are nearing completion and a public meeting to discuss the contents of both will be held following publication. All interested parties will be invited to attend the discussion forum.

Fethard Connection with double win in Dubai
Michelle Nevin, daughter of Michael and Chris Nevin from Fethard, and assistant trainer to Richard Dutrow, was in Dubai for the Dubai Duty Free International Racing, Saturday, 29 March, with two horses, ‘Diamond Stripes’, winner of a $1 million race and ‘Benny the Bull’ winner of a $2 million race. Michelle was interviewed on television in connection with the two wins.

“We are over the moon with this success,”
said Michelle after ‘Benny The Bull's’ sensational win in the Gulf News sponsored race. “This is a dream night and the dream continues for us with this second success,” Michelle stated.

The assistant trainer said they had always believed the horse was a quality speed merchant. “Any win of this nature can be a huge boost to a horse's résumé. But this one is even more special as it puts him as one of the top sprinters in the world. We have always believed in his ability as a sprinter,” she stated.

Jockey Edgar Prado, who was celebrating his second success of the night, was even more pleased with his mount. "He has phenomenal speed and that is what he showed everyone. He's the most laid back horse, but at the same time I would put him as a ‘push-button’ horse. He's there and you have to just coax him and he is gone.”

Michelle was representing trainer Richard Dutrow Jr, who stayed behind in the USA to oversee his colt, ‘Big Brown’, cruise to a five-length victory over ‘Smooth Air’ in the Florida Derby on Saturday last at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida.
