Fethard GAA Club News
In senior football on Saturday last Fethard advanced to contest the South senior final against Moyle Rovers. Our last time was 2005 when we were successful against Carrick Swans. Our last and only meeting since 2000 with Moyle Rovers was in 2002 when on that occasion we won our 27th South title on a scoreline, Fethard 0-13 to Moyle Rovers 0-8.

On Saturday last we were far from impressive in grinding out a victory on a score line, Fethard 0-9, Ardfinnan 0-7, with eight frees all scorable getting away. Lets wish our team the best on Sunday next when we will be going for our 29th South title. The team was: Paul Fitzgerald, Damien Byrne, Michael Aherne, Ian Kenrick, Benny Hahessy, Cian Maher, Glen Burke, Aiden Fitzgerald 0-1, Jamie McCormack 0-1, Eoin Doyle, Stephen O’Donnell, John P Looby 0-2, Willie Morrissey, Brian Coen 0-5 (4f) and Christopher Sheehan. Subs used were Miceál Spillane and Kenneth O’Donnell. The South final takes place this Sunday 23rd September in Clonmel at 3.30pm.

In Junior A Football we await the result of Commercials and Cahir for our next match.

Our Lotto Jackpot €6,700 was not won. We had no match three winners so the following tickets drawn won €30 each: Jim Williams (Killusty), Megan Coen (The Green, Fethard), Danny Kane (Kerry St), Nicky O’Shea (Tullow) and Brian Coen (Killusty). The €50 Lucky Dip was won by Liam McCarthy (Coolmoyne).

Fethard Juvenile GAA Club
Our Under-14s having won their South Championship bid, were out to Loughmore in Cashel last week in the county semifinal and were extremely unlucky to be beaten by a much stronger, bigger team. The final score was by no means a reflection of the heart and effort these young men put into the game but in the end they were not able to keep up the pace. Well done to them all and a big thank you to their trainers for the time and effort put into this team. Also a big thank you to all the parents and especially those who did not have anyone playing on the day but came to support and cheer them on - thank you!

The Under-16s still have a few matches to play and have reached the south quarterfinal of their championship bid. We wish them the very best of luck. Match results and report will be printed when games have been played.

The Under-10s took part in the centenary celebrations that took place over the weekend in Monroe. A great day was had and a very young under-10 team took part in a football blitz. They were not to be winners on the day but certainly put on a wonderful display of football. Thanks to Monroe for their hospitality.

Help For The Homeless

Alice Leahy (centre) presenting the Frank Purcell Memorial Trophy to this year's winning team L to R: Trish Kelleher, Chris Coen, Alice Leahy (Trust Charity), Bobbi Holohan and Vincent Woodlock.

The Frank Purcell Memorial Golf Classic in aid of Trust took place on Saturday last at Slievenamon Golf Course, followed by the prizegiving and barbecue in McCarthy’s. The previous attempt to play the Classic was postponed due to unseasonable flooding at the course, but the weather was on the side of the golfers this time. They were blessed with a beautiful sunny day. A large number of teams took part and the eventual winners of the ESB sponsored fourball in Mount Juliet were Bobbi Holohan, Trish Kelleher, Vincent Woodlock and Chris Coen.

A large crowd attended the prize giving ceremony, where Fethard’s Alice Leahy, the co-founder of Trust, handed out the prizes. Alice spoke of how the charity is now over thirty years in operation and needed even more support now than when it was founded. Despite our booming economy, Alice noted that she had homeless people from eleven countries seeking help at her door last week. The marginalized in our society need her help more and more each year. Thus it was heartening to see so many people selflessly putting their hands in their pockets to help out.

The evening finished with a barbecue with music provided by the excellent ‘Supernoodles’ (formerly known as Back Door) band from Kilkenny. The committee would like to thank all of those who helped make the event such a success. It is gratifying to note that every penny of the funds raised will go directly into day-to-day use and not get eaten up by administration or high tech offices. If people want to know more about Trust, they can look up their website at www.trust-ireland.ie

Napier Family Information
My name is Anne Anderson, I live in Sydney Australia and I often search the Fethard web site hoping to find information on my ancestors William & Honora (Baldwin) Napier who lived and raised their children in Fethard about 1860-1900. Three of their children immigrated to Australia, some to the USA and at least one to England. I have tried looking up the Napier and Baldwin name in the Irish Phone book link from the Fethard site without any success. I know from your site that there are still Napiers living in or around Fethard and I am hoping that you may be able to suggest to me some way of making contact or obtaining the addresses of any residents by the name of Napier or Baldwin who may still live in Fethard or nearby.
Any help or suggestions you can give to me would be greatly appreciated. My email address is: jcanders@bigpond.com Thanking you, Anne Anderson.

Van DeVater whereabouts
If anyone has information as to the whereabouts or contact details of the Van DeVater family who lived in Fethard some years ago, a relative living in California would appreciate the information.  You can contact Tina Nobriga directly at email: cattails44@comcast.net or give us the details and we will pass them on.

Gormley and Hunting – The Thin End of the Wedge
Tom Hayes T.D. criticised the Minister for the Environment, John Gormley for beginning his long-awaited chase after hunting and coursing.

Is this the beginning of the Green party pushing their agenda on Fianna Fail, and the country? This smacks of the Green Party (with John Gormley at the helm) promoting their internal priorities in incremental steps. Since going into government, the Green Party have been working on their policies, with John Gormley emphasising at every step the Green Party policy matters relating to the environment and other policy. What will be next for the Minister and his Party? While Minister Gormley’s position directly relates to the countryside, agriculture, and the rural population, he is woefully out of touch with the tradition and pride associated with these sports, which are not intended to cause harm to animals and are a wonderful family activity.

Tom Hayes said publicly in a Dáil debate: “Everybody is opposed to the mistreatment of animals, regardless of the side of the debate they are on, or the part of the country in which they live. I love what is good in rural Ireland, whether it is coursing, hunting hares, beagling or whatever, and I believe there is a strong agenda to stop those sports.”

Will the Green Party slowly work on this agenda, and where will we stand at the finish line if this unstable coalition lasts a full five years in government?  For further information, please contact Tom Hayes on 087 8105016.

News from ‘An Ghaeltacht’
Céad mile failte ar ais to all our Gaeilgeoirí who attended Irish courses in the Gaeltacht during the summer holidays. Kate O’Brien, Laura Rice, Aisling Dwyer and Rebecca O’Donnell spent three enjoyable and beneficial weeks in Coláiste na nOileán in Connemara. They visited the Aran Islands and viewed some of the props used in the Fr. Ted television series.

Ida Carroll immersed herself in the language culture and traditions of the West Kerry Gaeltacht, spending three great weeks in Baile an Fhirtéaraigh.
