Fethard Residents

This photograph was taken by Bob Lanigan, Tullamaine, as traffic stopped to let the late Jimmy Ryan's geese take their daily patrol of Main Street picking up any remnants of food left over from the previous night and having an odd poke in the flower tubs for hidden treasure.

The Well Golf Society
As members may now know, our trip to Callan was cancelled due to weather conditions. This outing has now been rescheduled for early September. In the meantime, we have organised our next outing for Saturday 24th June to Abbeyleix Golf Club. Tee off time is 9.30am. We played in Abbeyleix for the first time last year and the reaction from our members was so positive we just had to play there again this year.

Congratulations
Congratulations to 11-year-old Evan Connolly, son of Sgt Liam and Margaret Connolly formerly from Garrinch, Fethard, who was a member of the Waterford Schoolboys Soccer league team who recently won the Munster Championship and reached the All Ireland Final this weekend. After beating Dublin in the semifinal in a tough game that went to penalties, they were beaten 2-1 by Donegal in the final.

Charity Soccer Game in Killusty

Back L to R: Noel Walsh, Johnny Neville, Brian Higgins, Paul kenny, William O'Brien, John Hanrahan, Eoin Whyte, John Stokes. Front L to R: Anthony Wall, Alan Phelan, Brian Coen, Seamie Tynan, Philip Croke, Paul Kelly and Chris Coen.

The Well team who beat McCarthy's 3-1 in a Charity Soccer Match in aid of Trust played last Saturday in Killusty. Back L to R: Ollie Woodlock, Michael Quinlan, Michael Ryan, Gabriel Horan, Ronan Maher, Brendan Brett, David Lawton, Mick Smyth. Front L to R: David Woodlock, Francis Tyrrell, Nicky Murphy, Jimmy O'Meara, Karl Maher, Shane Aylward and Martin Coen.

A large group of spectators turned out in beautiful hot weather to see a team from The Well battle their soccer skills a team from McCarthys in Killusty last Saturday evening. The game was organised as a fundraiser for Trust Charity, founded by local lady Alice Leahy, formerly from Annsgift, Fethard. The game was refereed by Killusty’s newly appointed league referee, Bernard Feery, who had a tough job enforcing soccer league rules on past-players with bad memories, rugby players, cricket players and a few suffering from bar-counter-elbow. Nevertheless, the game went ahead without injury and in good spirit with the more experienced drinkers from The Well emerging victorious on a 3-1 scoreline.

Helping at the gate were L to R: Paula Gahan, Michael Flaherty and Sean Aylward.

Juvenile GAA Club
Our under-6, 8, 10 and 12s played Clonmel commercials in the community field last Friday night and all teams did great there was a great turnout from children and adults and many new faces turned up to participate in a great nights fun. We hope to have more games this Friday night. A special thanks to the Clonmel club for coming out to play us. Our under-14s played Moyle Rovers in a play off game on bank holiday Monday and were unlucky to lose by 3 points in a thrilling game of football played in sweltering heat.

Having lead by 4 points at halftime, thanks to 2 brilliant goals from Matt Fitzgerald and a peach from Tommy Sheehan, we somehow lost our way and, with time running out, brought their lead back to 3 points with another great goal from Tommy Sheehan. But time was against us and we could not get that vital score to level the game.

The boys gave there all and had some great displays on the day from Kieran O’Connell, Frankie Donovan, Davy Walsh, Matt Fitzgerald, Brian Delahunty, Alan Lawrence and Tommy Sheehan. The team will have played in another play off by the time you read this and hopefully will have qualified for the semifinal.

All membership is now well overdue and will have to be paid before the hurling championship starts. We wish all the best to the Tipp football team who play Kerry this Sunday and to Paul Fitzgerald, Cian Maher, Brian Coen, Aidan Fitzgerald and Glen Burke who are on the panel.

We then went on to the county quarterfinal played in Boherlahan on Monday 4th June, with Martin Goldsboro in charge of the whistle, to record a victory on a scoreline, Fethard 1-13 (0-5), Eire Og (Annacarty) 1-7 (1-5). Well done to Aiden Fitzgerald who played on the Tipp Intermediate hurling team that beat Waterford last Sunday in the Munster semifinal. They now play in the Munster Final in mid July.

The best of luck to all our players in both junior, Michael Dillon, and senior football, Paul Fitzgerald, Cian Maher, in the Munster Championship semifinals in Killarney on this Sunday 10th June.

The Munster Hurling Final on 26th June between Tipperary and Cork is an all ticket affair and we ask that only interested Club Members 2006 give there names to Nicky O’Shea, Gus Fitzgerald or Noel Byrne and that all accounts to date be cleared before names will be taken by any of the above.

Fethard London Reunion
Following emails and calls from people concerned that the Fethard London Reunion wasn't going to take place this year. Paul Looby has contacted us to say this year’s Reunion will take place later in the year and Mary Morrissey and her band have now been booked for the 7th October.  Paul is just waiting on confirmation of a central London venue and will forward all the details when available. But for now, please pencil in 7th October in your diaries and get booking those flights. He would love to see a large Fethard contingent come over this year.

On behalf of his Fethard friends, we would like to wish Paul and his fiancée the very best of luck for their wedding which takes place in a few weeks time.

Medieval Town Brochure
On Saturday evening next, 10th June, a new Medieval Town Trail brochure is being launched in Fethard. The colourful brochure, produced by the Fethard Historical Society lays out a mapped walking trail around the old walled town.  Everyone is invited to join in the event which begins in the Holy Trinity Church of Ireland at 7pm.

The launch itself will be performed by Mr John Bradley of the History Department of St. Patricks College Maynooth. Mr Bradley is an expert on the medieval period and he has spoken previously in Fethard, a place he cares about a great deal.

The Historical Society received welcome assistance from Tipperary Leader towards the production of this useful guide, as Fethard’s unique heritage belongs to all of Tipperary, and to all of Ireland for that matter.

Guided Walk
Following the launch, Mary Hanrahan of the Historical Society will lead a guided walk along the Medieval Town Trail. The walk will end up in the Abymill Theatre where refreshments will be available to all the weary - but well-informed -walkers.

Teenage ‘Treasure Trail’
A total of one hundred euro in prizes will be given to the winners of a historical treasure trail contest for young people. The winners will be those who can answer a questionnaire based on the historical town of Fethard. All answers will ‘surface’ during the walk so any keen eyed teenager has a chance of winning. Entrants can go alone or in pairs and questionnaires will be given out at the launch in Holy Trinity Church at 7pm. Three prizes are on offer: the winning pair will get €50, and a second and third prize of €30 and €20 respectively will also be available. All in all, easy money is to be had!

All Welcome
Saturday evening will therefore present a great chance to natives and visitors alike to get to know the history of the old town and the Historical Society sends out a warm welcome to one and all to join with them in ‘Walking the Line’ on Saturday evening.

Some Information on St. Bernard’s Group Homes

  • St. Bernard's Group Homes continues a caring tradition established in Dundrum, Co. Tipperary in 1908 by the Presentation Sisters. For over sixty years, the Centre cared for children from homes where the death, indisposition or personal distress of a parent made it impossible for normal family life to be maintained.

  •  In 1975, the Sisters established purpose-built residential units on a three-acre site at Fethard, creating one of the first modern residential child care facilities of its type in Ireland.

  • Since then over 400 children and young people. have benefited from the professional care and supervision of St. Bernards.

  • Today this facility offers up to fifteen places to children and young people in informal surrounds that provide a warm and caring environment and allow them to live as normal a life as possible.

  • Since 1997 one of our units specialises in caring for young people needing High Support. Innovative and creative work is ongoing as we build community and help young people live together, deal with their hurts and trust enough to form meaningful relationships with others.

We look forward to welcoming you during the week of the exhibition.
