Small is Beautiful
The music lovers of Fethard will get a chance to see top class artists in an intimate setting on Friday 16th January in McCarthy’s when Jim Rooney, Mick Daly and Arty McGlynn play in the back room in the bar.

Jim Rooney is better known as the Grammy winning Nashville producer, who has produced hits for Hal Ketchum, Nancy Griffith and John Prine. In Ireland, he is best known for his work with, ‘The Lee Valley String Band’, who are familiar to Fethard audiences as they have played for the past two Walled Town Festivals (with Fethard man Hal O’Neill on fiddle).
Mick Daly is one of the founder members of the Lee Valley String Band, and he will accompany Jim in Fethard. They are currently working on the Lee Valley’s next album, which they claim to arrange in one of their kitchens, so they should be well used to intimate venues like the back room in McCarthy’s.
The last member of this trio is well known to Irish and world audiences. Arty McGlynn started his musical career in the showbands, in an era when showbands ruled the Irish music scene. He then moved on to work in the traditional, folk and rock world, playing with Planxty, De Dannan, Patrick Street, Christy Moore, Paul Brady and Van Morrison. He has recently worked with Jim Rooney playing on Sean Keane’s latest album. Tickets for the gig are €20 and there are a few left. Call to McCarthy’s or ring 086 8119625.

Abymill to stage Fionn Mac Cumhaill production
Misery the latest production from the Fionn Mac Cumhaill Players will play for one night in the Abymill Theatre in Fethard on Friday 9th January. This Stephen King thriller, made famous by Kathy Bates and James Caan, through film is rarely seen on stage and is gripping stuff as the relationship between the two actors has to be seen to be believed. A live performance is always great and especially so here as you get lost in the story and begin to believe what is happening. Although a dark play there are many very funny incidents and you can’t help but laugh at how childlike the character is in ways. Booking el: 086-8871467 or 086-0834208.
