He is the 13th Secretary of the South Board and had the unique distinction in his first year to serve with another Fethard man Miceál McCormack in the Chair, both from the same Club.

GAA Club News
In the County Intermediate Hurling League last Sunday we lost out heavily at home playing very much under-strength to Moyne, on a scoreline, Fethard 1-6, Moyne Templetuohy 4-11.

Our fixtures in Minor A football are this Wednesday 1st April, against Cahir in Ned Hall Park, and on Sunday 5th April, against Clonmel Og in Monroe at 12.15pm.

There was no winner of our Lotto Jackpot. The numbers drawn were 5, 19, 23 and 24. We had three match three winners of €50 to: Vanessa O’Donnell (Monroe Fethard), Bob Maher (Barrack St, Fethard), and Monica O’Shea (Woodvale Walk, Fethard). The €50 Lucky Dip was won by Peter Grant (The Valley, Fethard). Thanks to AIB for supplying the tickets.

The late Ajay Mehta
Ajay MehtaAjay Mehta of Carlow, formally The Valley Fethard, passed away on Wednesday 4th March 2009 having just turned 40 years of age two weeks previous. Born in Leister England of Irish/Asian descent, Ajay moved to Fethard in the late 70s with his family. He was a past pupil of Fethard Patrician Brothers Primary and Secondary School and later went on to study Industrial Design at Carlow IT.

During the early 1980s He was an active member of the Fethard ‘Teen Group’, who along with Kay Riordan and other members ran numerous successful activities and discos for the youth of Fethard.

He had a love of theatre and the arts and was very proud to be part of the FAS Youth Training team who in 1985 began work on restoring the derelict Fethard Mill into the Abymill Theatre the town has today.
His great passion in life was design and photography where this enthusiasm spilled over as lighting technician in several productions for the Hogan Musical Society. He was part of the company whom during the 1980s produced the acclaimed ‘Oklahoma’ and ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ amongst others.

In 1987 as a teenager he fell ill with cancer and underwent surgery for Hodgkin’s disease. To combat the effects of chemotherapy he started Fethard’s first newspaper round delivering daily papers to local households. Even though he was plagued with disabilitating illnesses throughout his life, he had a generous, gentle and courageous spirit. His is a light that shall never go out.

Heartfelt gratitude to the people of Fethard for their kindness and support shown to Ajay and his family. Ajays months mind mass is on at the Parish Church Fethard Sunday 5th April at 11am.

Ruth Dillon for Backroom Sessions
Ruth Dillon
Galway based singer, Ruth Dillon, who originally hails from Clonmel is the latest to play in the Backroom Sessions in McCarthy’s. Ruth flirted with music for years before she was heard singing by Dolores Keane’s musical director, John Faulkner, in a bar in San Francisco. She spent the next five years touring Europe, Scandinavia and the United States with Dolores and her band, always getting a chance to do her solo slot at each show. Dolores also asked her to join her on the ‘Woman’s Heart 10 Years On Tour’, where she shared a stage with Maura O’Connell, Mary Coughlin, Eleanor McEvoy and Cara Dillon. All this time, Ruth was writing her own music and preparing her first album.

Ruth has also performed with such luminaries as Richard Thompson, Jack L, Ron Sexsmith, Luka Bloom, Altan, Sharon Shannon and Juniper (that’s Bell X 1 with Damien Rice to those that don’t know).
Joining Ruth in McCarthy’s is American bluegrass player Tom Hanway. Tom graduated college with a BA in legal studies, but gave it up for a life in music. He has shared the stage with Bill Monroe, Peter Rowan, Levon Helm (The Band), and Bill Keith among others. Together they play McCarthy’s on Friday 17th April. Tickets are €12 from McCarthy’s. The final score was 7-5 to Fethard (photographs supplied by Kieran Butler).

Our under 12s and 10s hosted neighbours Carrick-on-Suir on Sunday morning last. The Fethard panel was depleted due to Confirmation in Killenaule and Moyglass, but two well-matched teams faced off and produced a great game of rugby. Fethard won by 8 tries to 4 and in doing so showed great running and handling skills, with quick ball releasing Kyle Walsh on four occasions to score 4 tries. Others to score were Shane Cleere, Tommy Anglim and Adam Fitzgerald.

Ben Murray played his first game as scrum-half and put in a great performance. The forwards were very strong throughout with James Harrington breaking the gain line at will. Others to impress on the day were Ciaran White for his tackling, while Tiernan O’Neil, Ruairí Hayes, Adam Keeley, Cathal Meagher, Cathal O’Donnell and Paul Moloney all put in personal best performances.

All these young lads will now compete to represent Fethard in an International Blitz in Waterpark next week-end where they will play against Piratii of Italy, Dublin, Cork Con., Shannon, Gorey, Kilkenny, Wexford Town and Seapoint. This is a great opportunity for these young lads to showcase their rugby skills against some of the best junior teams in Ireland, and one from Italy giving this event an International flavour. It’s a great occasion for our club and it reflects very well on the coaches as we are the only team, apart from our hosts from East Munster, involved in this prestigious event.

Under-12s were away to Ballyporeen on Saturday of last week and were not so lucky in the first round of their championship bid. It was with great pride and pleasure that we were able to introduce four girls onto the team — Katie Butler, Annie Prout, Laura Ryan and Jessie McCarthy. It has been a while since we have had girls to play on this age group team and we wish the Under-12s better luck in their next match when they are at home to Mullinahone on Saturday 4th April at 12 noon in the GAA field. Members will be given all details at training.
The Under-14s had a challenge match at home on Sunday last week in the run-up to the start of their championship and came away with a very convincing win against Mullinahone.

Hunting News
The Tipperary Foxhounds promoted a most successful Point-to-Point meeting at Lisronagh on Sunday last 29th March. They hold their annual Hunter Trials at Rochestown, Cahir, on Friday next 10th April. Rochestown is a new venue by kind permission of Mrs D.P. O’Brien and Ms Yvonne McClintock. The course has been designed by Mr Michael Higgens M.F.H. Start is 9am.

The Tipperary Foxhounds finished their season with a meet at Drombane by invitation of the Golden Vale Foxhounds.

Tim Hyde (Junior) and Michael Purcell leading off the Golden Vales from a meeting in Holycross.

The Golden Vale Foxhounds were founded in 1945 by Mr Tim Hyde, Camas. Tim Hyde, a leading National Hunt jockey of his time, rode Workman, winner of the Grand National 1939 and the great Prince Regent, winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup 1945. Tim Hyde hunted the northern side of the Tipperary country by agreement with the Tipperary committee and Mrs Sylvia Masters, master and huntsman with the Gallant Tipps. Mrs Masters was the only lady to actually hunt the Tipperary Foxhounds in their 190 years history.

Following a riding accident in the show ring, Tim Hyde was forced to give up hunting in the early 1950s and the Golden Vale hunt was disbanded. Captain Williams, who took over Mastership of the Tipps c.1954 re-opened the Golden Vale area which he hunted up to 1974 when the Golden Vale was reformed by Tim Hyde junior. They are still going strong up to the present day. They have always worked in harmony with the Tipperary Foxhounds and strong links have always been maintained between the two hunts. Tim Hyde junior, who hunted the Golden Vales up to 1987 was sequentially Master or Joint Master of the Tipps 1992-2002.

A current Master of the Golden Vales, Pat Lyons, is a member of the Tipperary Hunt and a regular follower, while Tim Hyde, grandson of the original founder of the Golden Vales is a prominent committee member.

Killusty soccer club beat Ballingarry Albion 5-4 in penalties last Sunday, after extra time, to reach the final of the Paddy Purtill Cup where they will play neighbours Killenaule Rovers. The game was very close and in the final minutes of normal play Ballingarry Albion scored a goal to draw leval at 1-1 and force extra time. It was a similar story in extra time when Ballingarry also scored in the dying minutes to equalise at 2-2 and have the game decided on penalties. Killusty keeper Ronan Maher made a great penalty save to enable his team mates win 5-4 after scoring in all attempts.
