Ballroom Dancing exhibition by students
Some of the dancers from Holy Trinity National School who took part in the Ballroom Dancing exhibition in Fethard
A wonderful evening's entertainment was provided by the children of Holy Trinity National School on Wednesday, May 25, when the put on an exhibition of ballroom dancing to a full attendance at Fethard Ballroom. The exhibition, run in competition format, was the culmination of a ten-week course at the school – one hour per week – with instructor and former award winning dancer, Marina Mullins, Fethard. All proceeds from the course and exhibition were donated to Fethard & District Day Care Centre
Marina told us that the idea for holding the competition first came after Micéal Maher, son of the late Bill and Babe Maher, The Green Fethard, offered all his parents' ballroom dancing trophies to be donated to a suitable charity. Marina suggested a dancing competition for local children which was enthusiastically agreed by the Maher family, who have a long tradition in ballroom dancing.
Marina Mullins and Pat Casey dancing the 'show dance' slow waltz
Fethard Car Boot Sale provided a perpetual cup and cash voucher for the overall winner. Local businesses also generously donated various spot prizes for the event.
The students dressed in very appropriate dance costumes for the occasion and really looked the part as compere, Mary Hanrahan, individually introduced the dancers as they took the floor. Watching the children dancing the Cha Cha Cha, Quickstep and Slow Waltz it was hard to believe these children had never danced 'ballroom' before and could reach such a high standard after just ten hour's tuition.
The dancers received rapturous applause after each dance which was followed by a dance recall before winners were announced by judges: Marina Mullins (Fethard), Pat Casey (Cashel) and Mary Delaney (Laoise).

Next Smallholder's Fair planned for June 25
The next Smallholder's Fair will now take place at Clonacody House on Saturday, June 25, so it's time for all garden enthusiasts to start thinking and get organised for the event!
Held once again at Clonacody House and Gardens, one mile from Fethard, the next event is a Smallholders Summer Picnic where we will focus on the first summer produce, new potatoes and strawberries, salads and fresh peas, all the joys of early summer. We'll also be looking at keeping on top of things at this time of the year, managing growing livestock, holding back weeds, conserve water and start enjoying the fruits of our labours!
Who do we need on the day? Stallholders with fresh farm and garden produce, hens, eggs, plants, tools, books, animal feed, plant food, compost, mulches, chicken coops, water butts, what have you got? Speakers/teachers to give talks and demonstrations on beekeeping, chicken-rearing, gardening, cookery, horses, anything about how to produce your own food and what to do with it.
Musicians are also welcome to join us for the craic and help all us hard workers to wind down! Kids area folk to set up activities for children and anyone else with ideas and energy who wants to come along!

Education - At Feile Cluain Meala in April, 1967, the Patrician Schools, Fethard, secured first place with 96% in the section for schools drama in Irish under 14. The adjudicator paid high tribute to the standard of acting, clarity of diction and general presentation of the winners.
The June examinations in Intermediate and Leaving Certificates were very successful. All pupils presented passed, sixteen in Intermediate, twelve with Honours, and eight in Leaving Certificate, two with honours. Terence O'Sullivan went to Clonliffe College to prepare for the priesthood, Augustine O'Flynn got an agricultural scholarship and Michael Kenny passed Civil Service Examination. David Fitzgerald, an ex-pupil, was awarded first place in the coming out parade at Templemore Garda Depot in March, the first Tipperary man to gain this distinction.
Bro. Joseph and Bro. Declan, Secondary School, were transferred and their places were taken by Bro. Steven and Bro. Paschal. The number on roll in Secondary now stands at 102, an all-time record. National School numbers, augmented by the Closing of Coolmoyne National School, are now 162, making Fethard Monastery N.S. a five-teacher school. Chemistry, Physics and Woodwork are now being taught in the Secondary School by qualified teachers.
Development Association - The observations made by Mr. E. McLoughlon, B.E., Acting Chief Assistant County Engineer (Planning), in the Draft Development Plan for Fethard, has resulted in the formation of the Fethard Development Association, the President of which is Very Rev. C. Canon Lee, D.D., P.P. The association will concentrate on efforts to promote industrial activity in the town as and when opportunity offers. It will also study the tourist potential of the area, with special reference to hotel and guesthouse accommodation, and promote social, cultural and recreational activities.
Officers elected were: Mr P. Meagher, B.A. Secretary, Mr E. O'Neill, N.T., and Treasurer Mrs Meagher. The association has decided to form three panels which would have the effect of ensuring that every facet of the life of the community would receive detailed attention. The members of the Industrial Panel are Michael Smyth (leader), Dr. Maher and Messrs R. Gorey, A. O'Flynn, Ed. Delahunty, T. O'Connell, T. Barrett and D. O'Sullivan. This panel will deal with such matters as housing, cleaning of the river, hotels, road survey and the promotion of suitable industries. Panel No. 2, Tidy Town and Tourism will be the responsibility of Miss H. O'Connell (leader), Messrs Ponsonby, P. Lonergan, T. Coffee, T. Carroll, W. Holohan, Mrs. Healy and Miss P. O'Connell. Panel activities include cleaning and painting of existing buildings, the publication of a brochure, farm house holidays, pony trekking, etc. The final panel, Social, Cultural and Recreational has the following members: Mr P. The members will concentrate on the promotion of a Fethard Festival week, the development of recreational facilities, the provision of a swimming pool, etc. Mr A. O'Flynn was appointed public relations officer and a public meeting will be held on the first Wednesday of January, 1968. Following this a Deputation from the Association met councillors who represent the Fethard area. It was learned with satisfaction that twenty houses, including eight new ones almost completed, will be built in Fethard in the next eighteen months. Following activities already on: The Christmas Tree in the Square, also Christmas Shopping arrangements in which draws for three prizes are being held by traders. It is hoped to have special lighting for the month of December.
Surprise Visit - Mr Sandy Duncan, who is on a round world trip, paid a surprise visit to his relations and Friends in Fethard by helicopter. Mr Duncan, who had a delay at London Airport, took a flight to Shannon, where he chartered the helicopter for the flight to Fethard. Sandy is a son of Mr John Duncan, Grove Road, Fethard, and is a partner in his fathers gigantic car spare parts business in South Africa.
Preparing for D-Day - The Capitol Cinema, these days and nights is a hive of activity. December 14, 1967, is D-Day, or maybe Delahunty-day, when the cinema will, as a modern ballroom, open its doors as a place of entertainment once again. Many local exponents of the 'light fantastic', when dancing was dancing, have stated their intention of making a comeback for the opening night.
