Fethard ICA
Best wishes for a very happy New Year to all our members. We will not have a meeting in January.

A reminder to anyone who would like to visit the 'ICA Champions in our Community' exhibition in the County Museum, Clonmel, that it continues until February 5. The work of Fethard past and present ICA members is well represented and we are very proud of all the community work they achieved over the years, so it is well worth a visit.

Fethard ICA Guild members would like to extend deepest sympathy to the family of the late Mrs Rita O'Shea, Main Street, who passed away during the Christmas period. Rita was a loyal ICA member and we will miss her presence at our meetings. May she rest in peace.

Hunting News

Tipperary Foxhounds had a field of seventy-five at their New Year's Day meet in Fethard. A brace in McCarthy's Bog quickly got to ground. From Rathvin they ran towards the old Racecourse where he got to ground in a pipe.

Rocklow was blank as was the Rathcoole Sandpits. Finding in Power's Wood they hunted down to the Moyglass – Fethard Road at Black's Bridge where they were stopped to avoid land they had already hunted. From Murdoch's they ran back to the Wood. From Ardsallagh they had their best hunt of the day. Finding at the Lodge they ran through Casey's to Pat Whyte's. Doing a U-turn here they ran back to Tom Noonan's and back to Annsgift where home was blown at 4.15pm.

The Tipp's had their best run of the week from Cashel on Tuesday, finding in the Wood at Hoare Abbey Cross they ran back to Hoare Abbey Cross. A fast left-handed circle from here to the brick bridge near Kennedy's where following a brief check Charlie ran almost the same circle again. This time he ran much deeper down to the Suir near the Old Castle. They checked here again in the Gorse. Hitting the line again they hacked straight down to Golden Village where they marked to ground. This run provided as good a forty-five minutes as they have had all season.

The future of hunting in Tipperary looks very promising indeed as evidenced by the field of some ninety children, of all ages, that turned out for the Children's Meet at Grove on Sunday. The young followers had a great afternoons sport around Grove Estate with a few excursions into Loughcopple, Kiltinan and The Carraigeen.

With the White Heathers
From their meet at Peppardstown on Sunday The Ballylusky White Heathers had a good day, with a big crowd attending, and got the 2011 season off to a good start. With refreshments provided through the courtesy of Mr. Bobby Guiry the New Year was welcomed in in style. Prior to move-off the Huntsman and Whippers-In were presented with new jackets. The jackets, embossed with the Ballylusky White Heather crest, were very kindly sponsored by Horsewear Ireland through Mr. Jack Ronan.

Finding in Knockelly Fort, one-hundred yards from the meet, hounds had a fox away that certainly knew his way around through Knockelly, Rathkenny and Lismoylan. Running over the hill he ran right-handed to Conor Cunningham's swinging left here they hunted back through the Valley by the Dairies (John Ryan's) to Maher's, Lismoylan. Hounds were going well here and hunted in view through the large fields (Delany's) back to where they found. Away again this time he ran to John Joe Whyte's, crossed the Drangan – Rathkenny Road to the large plantation in O'Brien's. Hounds were gathered here and vanned back to the meet. They enjoyed three good runs here.

From Coolmore (Anglim's) they ran to Sparrow's, St. Johnstown, crossed the road here to Heffernan-Delany's, back again through O'Donnell's to Dillon's and lost him by the Coolmore offices near the Fethard – Killenaule road. On their way home they found in the Sandpit (in Heffernan-Delany's) under Knockelly Castle. They had a nice circle on this one and were still hunting well at five o'clock when they were stopped, bringing an excellent days hunting to a close.

The Ballylusky White Heathers will meet on Sunday January 9, at Loughcopple; January 16th, Ballylusky; January 23, Kilvemnon School and January 30, at Coolmoyne.

Greetings from Kenya
It is that time of year again when we bid ‘GOODBYE’ to one year and welcome another. There is no way I can say it any better than Tennyson, quoted in part here (with his permission!)

Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,
the flying cloud, the frosty light;
The year is dying in the night;
Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.

Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring happy bells across the snow;
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.

Ring out the grief that saps the mind,
for those that here we see no more,
Ring out the feud of rich and poor,
ring in redress for all mankind.

Ring out the shapes of foul disease,
Ring out the narrowing lust for gold;
Ring out the thousand wars of old,
Ring in the thousand years of peace.

Tennyson wrote more of that and I take this opportunity to wish you all of that and more for 2011. May you all have God's blessings throughout the New Year and beyond.

Fethard Rugby Club News
Fethard/Thurles 22, Clonmel/Dungarvan 18.
This was a fine game, very even throughout and the difference between the teams was the man of the match performance by Mark Cummins who scored two tries and made many tackles. Clonmel Dungarvan were first on the score sheet with two penalties and the game was very tight throughout with each team scoring alternatively. But it was that man Mark Cummins who had the final say with a fine try to win the game. Shane Power, Matthew Fitzgerald, Kieran Power and Robert Hall had a great game also.

Fethard J2s - Gleeson League
Fethard travelled to Kilfeacle on Sunday to play in the Gleeson League, short many regulars this was always going to be a tough task. Fethard were slow to start and Kilfeacle led by two penalties, but some great rucking from Nigel O'Connell, John Hannigan and Paul Scully saw Cian Moloney crush over for a fine try, Declan Doyle converted. After more great play by both sides Fethard were awarded a penalty which they converted. A lapse in concentration saw Kilfeacle with an overlap and crossed the line for a fine try in the corner. Half time score was 11-10 in favour of Kilfeacle.

Fethard Captain, Brian Moloney, had strong words at half time and a much-improved performance was had in the second half. Cathal Gorey made some fine breaks and on one occasion Alan O'Connor was on hand and with a low centre of gravity he was able to get under the Kilfeacle defence to score a fine try, Declan Doyle converted. Both sides had chances to score in the last ten minutes, Chris Large was unlucky to knock on with the line at his mercy, and a fine back row move by Kilfeacle saw Alan O'Connor making a try saving tackle, Dick Walsh and Richard Gorey were also strong in defence. The game's final score was 17-11, leaving Fethard worthy winners.

Fethard J2 - Ken Ryan Cup
After and enforced break due to the frost we were back laying rugby straight after Christmas. On December 28 we hosted Clonmel in a match for the Ken Ryan memorial cup, a large crowd attended and all money raised went towards Hospice. The game was played at a fast pace and Clonmel were awarded a penalty which they converted just before half time.

Clonmel kept up the pressure in the second half and after great Fethard defending they eventually crossed for a fine try. Fethard then seemed to wake up and a great break by Joe Kelly saw him run 40 metres to score under the post, Declan Doyle duly converted. Fethard kept on the pressure for the remainder of the game but Clonmel came out worthy winners at 10 point to 7.

Fethard had fine performances from Paul Ronan, Paddy Teehan and Paul O'Dwyer in the forwards and from P.J. Morrissey, Alan O'Connor and Shane Kavanagh in the backs.

The presentation of the cup took place in McCarthys Hotel where many tributes were played to the late Ken Ryan. His wife, mum and dad were also present on the night. Our thanks to John Kelly for a fine refereeing job.
