Lonergan’s Bar also had their own fundraising event in aid of the Tipperary Special Olympics Fund when customer Larry Hopkins decided to have his well-established ponytail, hair and beard shaved off by extremely competent barber Leo Swift who offered his services for the event.

Fethard Annual Emigrant’s Newsletter
Anyone interested in helping with the production of this year’s Annual Emigrant’s Newsletter are asked to contact Joe Kenny, Rocklow Road, Fethard, Tel: 052 6131663 or by email: newsletter@fethard.com

Help is always needed gathering articles and photographs, indeed, one of the most time-consuming chores is trying to put captions to the photographs with correct names. Other ways people can help is in writing articles or inviting others to write articles in good time for publication.

The first issue of the Fethard & Killusty Emigrants’ Newsletter was published by the Legion of Mary in December 1959 and dated ‘Christmas 1960’. On checking the dates of the events and deaths featured in the newsletter we discovered that they all happened in 1959 so we concluded that the Newsletter was published in December 1959 and posted in January 1960. This ‘first newsletter’ was discovered in a drawer by Pat Shine formerly from Crampscastle and now living in London.

Today, fifty years later, the newsletter has grown into a full colour 200 page production and is still posted free of charge to all our emigrants living throughout the world.

Died recently
The death has occurred on Thursday 24th June of Richard (Dick) Byrne of Whitehall, Tullamore, Offaly. Sadly missed by his loving wife Breda, sons John and Paul, daughters Catherina and Caroline, sister Lelia, relatives and friends.

Dick, formerly from Main Street, Fethard, was a son of the late Sergeant William Byrne who was first appointed from Mullinahone to Fethard Garda Station in 1940. Interment took place in Clonminch Cemetery, Tullamore.

Fethard connection with Irish Derby winner
This year’s Irish Derby winner, Cape Blanco, a 3-year-old chestnut colt by Galileo out of Laurel Delight, by Presidium, was bred by Jack Ronan, Orchardstown, and Des Vere Hunt Farm, Garraun House, Fethard.

Local racing enthusiasts remember Thomas Kearney, The Green, Fethard, fostering Cape Blanco for the first few weeks of his life as a foal. Shows what a little ‘tender loving care’ can do!

The Castle Inn, Fethard, held a leg wax in support of the South Tipperary Hospice on June bank holiday weekend. The evening was a great success with The Castle raising €600, on the night, for the Hospice Society. The evening was great craic and The Castle proved that social responsibility and having the craic are not mutually exclusive ideals. All monies raised were presented to Martin Burke, husband of the late Breda Burke in Kilcoran Lodge.

Jack selected for ‘Irish Schoolboys Boxing Team’
Congratulations and best wishes to Jack Connolly, The Green, on being selected to be a member of the Irish Schoolboys High Performance Boxing Team.

Jack commenced squad training on Saturday 26th June, and will be put through a rigorous strength and fitness programme, by the national coaches assigned to the high performance team. All training will take place at the National Boxing Stadium in Dublin over the coming weeks in preparation for the European Championships, which for 2010 will be held in Bulgaria.

Incidentally this is Jack’s second year in a row to be called up for International squad training, and after just turning 14 years of age since Friday, that is a great achievement in itself. Again Jack well done, you do your family and Fethard proud.

Marie Keating Foundation Health Information Service
Groups or organisations within the community who might be interested in the services of the Marie Keating Foundation mobile units & nurses, should contact Angela Egan, Marie Keating Foundation, Unit 9 Millbank Office Park, Lucan, Co Dublin. Phone 01 6283726.

Mobile units and nurses visit communities and offer advice and help to men and women as part of annual health days or as a once off assistance to staff. On their mobile unit they have in-house presentations as well as prosthetic teaching aids in order to educate, show and highlight the importance of early detection and self awareness. The unit is equipped with take-home information leaflets on each of the key cancers – Lung, Bowel, Skin, Mouth, Prostate, Testicular, Ovarian, Cervical & Breast cancers. A nurse is available to talk to the public on a one-to-one basis with people on any health related issues they may have.

The service is about education and awareness only, they do not carry out screening. Nurses aim to teach and inform the public and the service is free of charge.

If there are any groups in the area, i.e. Active Retirement Groups, women’s or men’s groups, contact details are above. More information also available on Facebook: facebook.com/mariekeatingfoundation

Fethard Walled Towns Day, Sunday 22nd August
Once again we are looking forward to parents and children participating in this year’s Walled Towns Day Festival which will take place on Sunday 22nd August. Last year was a great success and thanks to all the effort by everyone in making the day so special.
This year, we are going to make ‘Medieval Cloaks and Mantles’. The cloaks will be made in the same premises as last year on the Main Street opposite Newport’s Newsagents. The art workshops led by Patricia Looby will begin on Monday 16th August for one week, with all ages catered for, from five upwards.

The project is based on medieval clothing and coats of arms, which appear on historic buildings around Fethard, as well as other medieval themes. Pupils will create their own cloak using materials and fabrics, embroidery, sewing, painting and decoration.

Look out for posters and advertising with more details on how to get involved, which will be posted in early August in local shops and newspapers and the Fethard website, www.fethard.com
This exciting project is leading us to National Walled Towns Day, a celebration of 20 walled Medieval Towns in Ireland, including Fethard, on Sunday 22nd August 2010. We look forward to working together on this new project.

Community Games County Athletics Finals
Congratulations to all competitors from the area who travelled to Templemore to take part in the Community Games County Athletics finals on Sunday last, especially Ryan Walsh, son of Eugene and Tracy, Killenaule Road, who won a silver medal in the boys U-8 60m event. This was a great achievement by Ryan who had to qualify in his heat and semifinal and was just narrowly beaten by Conor McKelvey from Silvermines in the final. Thanks to all parents for their tremendous support, especially to Anthony Wall, Knockelly, who acted as athletics manager on the day.

Fethard Juvenile GAA Club
Congratulations and well done to our U-16 footballers who have reached a place in the county final. The team put on a magnificent display of football on last Saturday afternoon when we travelled to Dundrum to play Moycarkey in the county semifinal. The final score stood at 5-08 to 2-05. Well done to this great bunch of young men and their trainers. We wish them the very best of luck in the final against Rockwell Rovers on Saturday 3rd July in Littleton at 1pm. It would be great to see as many supporters there to cheer them on. Please come along with your support.

Any changes of time or venue can be seen on the Fethard Bord na nÓg webpage. All information regarding matches and fixtures are updated regularly.

Our U-14s were out to Mullinahone at home on Monday evening last. Report next week. These great lads brought home the county football title and we wish them as much luck in the hurling. Tommy Anglim, John Hurley and Tommy Sheehan are their trainers.

Reminder that the last few places are left in the Cúl Camp so please get in touch with either club secretary or Annette O’Donovan (camp coordinator) to book your place.

Killusty Pony Show this weekend
The 47th Killusty Pony Show will be held this year on this Saturday 3rd July. We have a huge variety of classes, something for every pony: ridden, hunter pony, handy pony, working hunter, jumping, lead rein, in-hand and many other classes and of course the fancy dress. Not forgetting the popular dog show with prizes for the ‘waggiest tail’ to dressing up (entries for the dog show will be taken on the field).
Lets hope we have a good fine day, like last year.

Fethard GAA Club News
