Manchester United lovers
Anthony Colville, originally from St. Patrick's Place, photographed with his two sons Tadhg and Ronan with Rio Ferdinand, Manchester United and Eng land defender, at Rosso Restaurant in Manchester after United's rececnt FA Cup game against Crawley Town. The restaurant is owned by Rio Ferdinand and was voted Manchester's best restaurant 2010-2011. Anthony's family are season ticket holders at Old Trafford and travel up from Essex for all United's home games. They also travel abroad to support United in Champions League games. Anthony was a former goalkeeper with Fethard senior GAA football team.
John White, Carryduff, Belfast, is writing a new book on, 'Manchester United – Irish Devils – How the Irish fell in love with Manchester United'.
He is looking for as many Irish Manchester United fans as possible to send their story of how they fell in love with Manchester United. He was also very interested in the story of the Moulson brothers, George and his brother, Connie, who were sons of Charles Moulson, a British Soldier, and Bridget Dahill of Sparogolea, and later The Valley, Fethard. Only dedicated soccer fans would be familiar with the name of these two Irish Internationals who played for Grimsby Town against Wolverhampton in the FA Cup semi-final on 25th March 1939. This game was played at Old Trafford and on record as their biggest attendance of 76,962.

Munster Title for Jack
After being crowned County Champion for the 4th year in a row on, Sunday, February 6, saw Jack Connolly from Clonmel Boxing Club, and representing Tipperary, win his 3rd Provincial title in as many years. He defeated the Cork county champion, Arran Ronan, from Glen Boxing Club, on a scoreline of 8 points to 3. The contest took place at the North Point Business Park, in Cork City, on Monday, February 28. Jack boxing at 57kgs, showed his class, with some fine scores with his now familiar left jab, and won comfortable in the end.
Next up for Jack, it's back to the National Stadium in Dublin, to compete in this year's All-Ireland finals, where he will go for his 3rd national title in a row, with the big incentive this year, 2011 being the Centenary year of the Irish Amateur Boxing Association.
Again Jack, well done on being Munster Champion for 2011, and best wishes in Dublin for the National finals, which will be held in early March.
Fethard Macra News
Members of South Tipperary Macra photographed at their meeting in Fethard to organise the forthcoming the Munster drama semifinals, which this will be held in the Abymill Theatre, Fethard, on March 19 and 20, with three plays on each night from different clubs around the province. At the meeting the members also presented a cheque for €1,000 to South Tipperary Hospice Movement, proceeds from their New Year's Eve Ball held in Clonmel.
The South Tipperary Macra New Year's Eve Ball Committee were proud to present a cheque for €1,000 to the South Tipperary Hospice Movement on Friday, March 4, in McCarthy's Bar, Fethard.
Officially launched in April 1990, the South Tipperary Hospice Movement is a voluntary organisation. Its care team has grown from two nurses to its current strong team of seven, providing a vital service to the community. Predominantly community funded, the organisation is reliant on the generosity of the people of South Tipperary to continue providing the services it offers.

Representative of the Hospice Movement, Jim Bond, thanked South Tipperary Macra for their donation. Chair of South Tipperary Macra, Ann Marie Wade said "Giving something back to the community is a vital part of what we do in South Tipperary Macra. The New Year's Eve Ball was a great success, and to be able to take something from that to benefit the wider community makes us very happy."
Things are hotting up in drama circles as those involved in this year's play are busily preparing under the directions of producer, Michael Manley. The play will be staged as part of the Munster drama semi finals, which this year will be held in the Abymill Theatre, Fethard, on March 19 and 20, with three plays on each night from different clubs around the province.
Keep 'Holy Thursday', April 21, free in your diaries, as Fethard Macra will hold a great night of entertainment in Cloneen Sports and Social Club with music by the 'Loose Cannons'. This promises to be a great night's craic.
Fethard & Killusty Community Council AGM
The Annual General Meeting of Fethard & Killusty Community Council will take place on Tuesday, March 15, in the Tirry Community Centre at 8.30pm. We invite individuals and representatives from local groups and organisations to come along and get involved in whatever area their interests are. This year we hope to restructure how the organisation works to reflect current needs and commitments. We would love to see a good turnout.
Following the AGM there will be a presentation by Kevin Collins on 'Fethard's Wildlife on the Clashawley', which includes very interesting information found by Kevin on his recent wildlife survey in Fethard.

Fethard & District Day Care Centre will hold their AGM on Thursday, March 10, at 8pm in the Tirry Community Centre, Barrack Street, Fethard. All are welcome.
Fethard Scouts
Fethard Scouts activities conducted recently, along with their weekly meetings, included a hike on the lower slopes of the Galtees, the County Orienteering Competition held at Glengarra, where Dan and Brendan Walsh took 2nd place in the U12, Willie O'Meara and Shane Quigley won the U14 and Donal Walsh won the U16. Well done to all. The Cubs, in addition to their weekly meetings, took part in the County Swimming Gala held in Carrick-on-Suir, they also completed a 'night hike' over Looby's Hill.
Ventures have plans to do an overnight camp on Slievenamon.
Scout Group Council, Leaders, Venture Executive, PLs and Sixers attended a full day's training last Sunday on the 'One Programme'. This programme is the result of over four year's work and promises to be a great adventure for all involved in scouting. It is with great expectation that we will soon be starting a 'Beaver Section' for boys and girls aged 6 to 8, more about this very soon.
Neil Diamond tribute band
James Sexton, brings a fantastic tribute show to the best selling solo artist of the 90s, Neil Diamond, to Lonergan's Bar on Saturday, March 12. Admission free. James has had this show on the road since 2000 and during this time he has built up an extensive range of fans. James is a true professional with a great ability to engage and interact with his audience. This show is not to be missed.

My name is Kythryn Eubanks and I live in Amarillo, TX. I've been trying to find information on a type of Irish rug called a 'lumra' and a Google search of that word led me to your Fethard website and the O'Connell sisters.
I am quite intrigued by the account of their successful rug making and wondered if anyone could point me to more information on the rugs, both those made by the O'Connell sisters and other as well? I am a shepherd and a hand spinner and have wanted to make a rug that would stand the test of time living on a dirt road in Texas.

'Dead School' play The Piper Inn
'Dead School', featuring Fethard's Cathal Maher, will play The Piper Inn, Clonmel, on Saturday, March 12.
On Saturday, March 12, 'Dead School' play The Piper Inn on Gladstone Street, Clonmel. Dead School are one of the freshest bands on the Irish scene. Cork based, Dead School are a four-piece alternative rock band that is creating a stir on the national scene. The band was formed in August 2010 and comprises of Donal McDonald (vocals/percussion), James McDonald (guitar/drums /vocals), Cathal Maher (guitar/drums /keys) and Ruairi Dale (bass). Having spent an intense few months holed up in various flats and practice rooms writing songs and honing their sound they are proving themselves as genuine talent.
For a band just six months together they are already filling venues and have a schedule that sees them playing every week in the coming months in venues across the country. They have a rapidly growing fan base and have also attracted the interest of various record labels.
Their live show is something special, it is full of raw energy, swirling guitars, pounding drums and unique vocals. These elements combined with their broad range of influences ranging from My Bloody Valentine and Killing Joke to Joy Division and Nick Cave combine to create an original and exciting sound.
The band are currently in studio putting the finishing touches to their debut double A sided single, 'Standing on the edge' / 'Frailities' which is due for release on April, 28. Fethard Rugby News
On Saturday evening last at the community sports field Fethard took on one of the giants of Munster rugby, Thomond RFC. This match was the semi-final of the O'Carroll cup. Right from the first whistle the game was played at a fast exciting tempo. It was the home side who put the first points on the board after ten minutes with a well taken try from Paddy Teehan. The Thomond team worked the ball up the field well, took the ball out wide and scored a good try which they duly converted leaving the score 7-5 in favour of the visitors at the half way point.
The second half started as the first finished, very fast and entertaining with both sides putting in hard tackles and good running. It was Thomond's experience that told in the end with their backs scoring leaving the score 14-5 in favour of the Thomond side. Fethard played some brilliant rugby for the last 15 minutes of the game, with some players taking hard knocks, in particular, scrum half Brian Murphy, who took a knock to the eye area which forced him to leave the game prematurely.
Fethard can take a lot of positives from the game, and equally there's a lot of work to be done before next Sunday when they meet Clanwilliam.
The U15s travelled to Clanwilliam on Sunday morning for their first match in the 'E' Munster Cup. Fethard started very well and put first points on the board with a penalty through captain, Kyle Walsh, then through great pressure and passing they got winger Denis Fogarty in for a try.
Clan came back through a quick break and scored in the corner, with the ground nice and firm the pace of the game was extremely fast which produced a hugely exciting game keeping the spectators enthralled. The Fethard scrum although smaller than Clan performed extremely well with Cian O'Connell leading by example. The front row of Cathal O'Donnell, Jason Ryan and Jack Gleeson absorbed ferocious pressure to let Eoghain McCormack get his backs moving. A try from Clan and a reply from Fethard demonstrated how even the teams were, but unfortunately Clanwilliam were ahead by a point with the score remaining at 14-13 at the final whistle. Fethard will now enter the Plate competition to see out the season. Training this Friday at 8pm.
Fethard U13s travelled to Port Laoise for a friendly game last Saturday and enjoyed a great game of rugby coming away on top 22-10. The team scored 4 tries with 1 conversion and all worked well together.

Fethard and Killusty Community Games Area Art Competition took place recently. There was a very big entry in all categories except the U16 events. It was also hard luck on some children who may be under the age at the moment but who will be over the age specified on July 31 next so therefore they had to compete in the higher age group. However, all submissions were of a high standard and the judge had a hard task selecting the medal winners.

The first two in all of these events have qualified for the County Finals which will take place on Saturday next, March 12, in Silvermines Community Hall commencing at 12 noon. Entry fee €2 to be paid on the day. Closing date for entries for the County Final was Monday last, March 8.

Directions to Silvermines from Thurles as follows. Take the Nenagh road out of Thurles R-498 (past the Tipperary Institute and the Racecourse). Continue through Borrisoleigh still going towards Nenagh. Just a few miles after Borrisoleigh one will pass Kavanagh's Bus Depot after which there are four cross roads. Take the road to the left signposted Dolla and Silvermines R-499 and follow the signs for Silvermines from there. One will also find detailed directions on the AA Route Planner on the Internet. It is approximately 43 miles from Fethard.
We also held a non qualifying Tots competition for children U6 years old which was won by:

Fethard GAA Club News
The Senior Football team got their year off to a start with a challenge against Clonmel Commercials on Saturday last. This was an opportunity to introduce a number of players to senior grade and with a number of minors and U21s featuring, the year ahead looks bright as we attempt to build a new team to challenge for honours.
While Commercials won by a narrow margin of 1-10 to 0-10, the overall effort was positive following on from a well attended training session on Friday night. We look forward to our first South Championship game in the next fortnight. Training continues for all adult players on Tuesday and Friday at 7.30pm sharp.
Our first senior fixture takes place on Thursday, March 17, against Moyle Rovers in Kilsheelan at 12.30pm.
Our U16s play their first football fixture in Fethard this coming Saturday, March 12, against Ballingarry at 4pm. Mini GAA and U10s start back on Saturday March 12, at 11am. All newcomers welcome. Registration will take place at this time for those who have yet to pay their membership.
Premier 12s train on Wednesday evenings at 7pm. U14s train on Monday and Thursday at 6.30pm. U16s and Minors train on Monday and Thursday at 8pm. Fixtures will be coming in for all age groups very soon, so training is very important. Please remember it is the player's responsibility to bring the correct equipment required for training, which includes a mineral drink. Juvenile training appears to be interrupted many times while players head off to get a drink.
Our lotto numbers drawn this week were: 6, 16, 27 and 32. We had no jackpot winner and no 'match three' winner. Our €150 winner was Josie Fitzgerald, Kiltinan, Fethard. Our lucky Dip winner of €50 was Dinny Burke, Red City, Fethard. The next lotto draw will be held on Tuesday, March 8, in the Fethard Arms. Tickets cost €2 each and can be obtained from any GAA member or local participating shops. All the proceeds go to facilitate the GAA players in Fethard, both senior and juvenile gain from the sales, so please support your club as funds are desperately needed. We are very grateful to Clonmel Oil who sponsored the printing of our lotto tickets this week.

Hunting Season Finishes
With their Children's Meet at Kilcooley the Tipperary Foxhounds finished their season as did the Ballyluskey White Heathers with their Lawn Meet at Orchardstown House on Sunday last.
The Tipperarys had sixty children plus a large turnout of adults at Kilcooley. Unusual for this venue they had a very good afternoon's hunting. Hounds hunted strongly for one-and-a-half hours taking a route that provided the adults with plenty of jumping, while the smaller children were looked after through the forest roads and pathways keeping them more than happy. Foxes were very scarce at Orchardstown with scent very poor to boot. Hounds found in the Ash Grove in Orchardstown and ran to the Old Church on the hill at Rathronan and to ground. Drawing back they did not find again until near Donoughmore where they chopped him in covert.
Following another short run they did not find again. Drawn through Ballinlough to Jossesstown and back down by Clonacody and the Golf Course to the meeting. The Ballyluskey White Heather wish to thank the Ronan family for the hospitality provided. Well, here we finish the Hunting Notes. Irish Stable Staff Award Winner
Congratulations to Johnny Nagle, Rathkenny, who was awarded a Stable Staff Award (Flat) for his work with Joseph G. Murphy, at Crampscastle. The Irish Stable Staff Association presented its annual awards in the Keadeen Hotel, Newbridge, on Saturday night last, March 5. There were a large number of nominations received from all over the country, covering both flat and National Hunt yards. Johnny was the winner in the Tipperary, Limerick, Kerry and Cork region. Well done to all concerned.
