Fethard Macra na Feirme are staging the one act play ‘Till We Meet Again’ by Colin and Mary Crowther in the Abymill Theatre on Tuesday, 16th March at 8pm. This play examines the question of what we would we do differently if we had the chance to live life over again?
Nearing death, the play's hero, John, revisits himself as a teenager, as a young man starting a career, as a disgruntled middle-aged husband and, in the final moments, as a newborn child and as the old man he'll never be. He is taken on this journey by his guardian angel in the guise of his old Nana. The play offers an insightful yet humorous account of the different paths life can take and of the mistakes we make along the way. It explores what has happened in the past and what might have been and what could have been if life had been lived differently.
The play’s cast features members of the ‘Fionn MacCumhaill Players’, Slievenamon Musical Society’ and ‘Cashel Pantomime Society’. The play is being directed and produced by Cork man Michael Manley. Michael has been directing plays for Macra clubs for many years. He directed the winning play ‘Sorry, Wrong Number’ for Clonakilty and was awarded Best Director at the Macra Drama National Final last year.
Cast is as follows: Noel Clancy (John); Una Shanahan (Nana); Michael Moclair (Young Man); Anne Marie Kennedy (Young Woman); Anne Kennedy (Sarah); Leah McNamara (Wife); and David Ryan (Old Man).

Moyglass group raise € 13,765 For Haiti Appeal

The sight of destruction, dead corpses, homeless children, horrific injuries and lack of basic items such as safe drinking water, food, and medical help led to the formation of a group of locals at the Village Inn, Moyglass, to start fundraising to alleviate suffering on the Caribbean island of Haiti following the massive earthquake of 12th January 2010. Haiti is one of the poorest countries on earth, with more than five people living in each room. The natural disaster led to horrific suffering, exacerbated by density of population and lack of basic necessities. It is estimated that 1.26 million children were affected by the earthquake.
The group set a target of around €1,000 with a table quiz and raffle chosen as the fundraiser. The ideas increased to a monster auction, requests for donations, head shaving and waxing. The generosity of people was tremendous with cash donations, items for auction ranging from pedigree calf, paintings, prints, fuel vouchers, Tipperary and Ireland jerseys, hampers, wine, car service, clothes vouchers, furniture and numerous other items received. It was simply overawing. The fundraisers are indebted and hugely appreciative of each and every person who helped to raise the outstanding final figure.
The huge attendance on the night at The Village Inn showed that the people of Moyglass and all areas of the county, despite the current recession, have a huge capacity to help those who are less fortunate in this world. The night generated such feeling of good will, that people present felt proud to be part of the experience. P.J Ryan had his head shaven by Helena Johnson, Sean Tynan and Pat Fennelly had their chests waxed by Jackie Lacy. Pat Morrissey proved a brilliant auctioneer and Kenneth Browne was outstanding as MC. Louise Ryan and Seamus Tynan excelled to generate donations and auction items. So many people helped that it is not possible to name everyone, but each and every person can feel very proud to have helped all those in need.
Fethard Ladies Football Club

A very enjoyable night was held in Butlers Bar last Friday night with the presentation of county medals to our victorious ladies junior football team. Thanks to Anne and Philip for a great night, to Brian Coen for presenting the medals and to Tommy Gahan for providing the music.
Training continues for all age groups on Saturday mornings from 11am to 12pm in GAA field. All new players welcome. All membership fees are now due and have to be paid before the 1st March.

‘Pray for us Sinners’
RTE who are producing a programme later in the year are to feature the new play by The Fionn Mac Cumhaill Players from Cloneen. The play is written by Tipperary man Paul Maher, formally of Fethard, and this play is sure to get people talking for many reasons and no doubt upset a few.
Set in 1986 in the days of moving statues and upheaval of Christian values, 'Pray for us Sinners' is the story of Joey Ryan, a young man of 22 who is confused by life around him. Why? Is he suffering from some illness perhaps or are the statues really moving? Are the voices he hears in his head real or is he making the whole thing up to avoid having to face up to life?
Joey lives with his recently widowed mam and younger sister and does all in his power to annoy and create upheaval in the household. Joey seems to blame himself for his fathers death — his father fell off a ladder that Joey was holding at the time.
Now a stranger is coming to stay — a fallen woman with a shady past — and also in the house for a week is a holy statue. Can Joey take the pressure, especially as many secrets from the past come to light.

Fethard Bridge Club
On February 17th we played the fourth and final round of the Player of the Year competition and the results were: 1st Gross, Alice Quinn and Berney Myles; 2nd Gross, Nell Broderick and David O’Meara; 1st Nett, Kay St. John and Rita Kane; and 2nd Nett, Nora Lawrence and Philly Kenny.

Stars in our bars
The Village Inn, Moyglass, will stage their heats of ‘Stars of our bars’ on Saturday nights during the month of March. The competition which has a total prize fund of €50,000 is sponsored by Smithwicks. The Annual General Meeting of Fethard and Killusty Angling Club will take place on this Friday night, 26th February, in the Tirry Community Center at 8pm. Members only.
Fethard GAA News
Congratulations to Eoin Fitzgerald (Fethard) who played as a substitute in Clonmel High School’s victory in the Munster B Senior Colleges football final last Sunday The final score was Clonmel CBS 1-9, Middleton 0-5. Congratulations also to Aaron Conran (Fethard) who was on Tipperary Vocational School’s panel that beat Kilkenny in the All Ireland Vocational Schools Senior Hurling Final played in Thurles on Saturday evening. The final score was Tipperary Vocational Schools 2-14, Kilkenny 1-14.
The Lotto Jackpot €4,600 was not won. The numbers drawn were 11, 17, 18 and 24. We had two match three winners who received €75 each: Helen Crotty (Claremore, Fethard), and Dick Fitzgerald (St Patricks Place, Fethard). The €50 Lucky Dip was won by John Fitzgerald (Kiltinan, Fethard). Our thanks to Clonmel Oil for providing the tickets.
With the White Heathers
Drawing Coolagh Cemetery blank from their meet at Coolbawn Cross on Sunday last they moved to the fort at the cross which held a brace. Both foxes ran together down towards the river at St. Johnstown where they split and unfortunately so did the hounds. One lot ran up by the river and left to Blackmore’s where they lost him, the others hunting their fox back to Cooleagh. A fox from Aiden Kennedy’s was lost after a short run and one from the Waterfall quickly got to ground. The day however finished on a much brighter note with quite a good hunt from a fox found further up. Running up towards the Fethard – Killenaule Road Charlie seemed to be heading for the big plantation at Rathmoley. Swinging left-handed back towards The Glebe House he turned left again and ran back down to Smyth’s near where he was found. Turning right here hunting on well hounds ran to Blackmore’s on to Guiry’s to the fort at Coolbawn. From here they ran down to Bawnbrack where they lost him. This was a very good run with scarcely a check.
The Ballyluskey White Heather Harriers are currently promoting their Annual Draw. While the country may be in recession nevertheless, to comply with new health and safety regulations, Kennel maintenance expenses are ever increasing. Tickets for the draw are €2 each, or a book of three for €5. The White Heathers are confident that the support of supporters, friends and followers of this long established pack will be forthcoming this year, as always. Ballyluskey White Heather Harriers meet on Sunday next, February 28th, at Coolmoyne.
Your vote can help Fethard Youth
Fethard Youth Centre has been shortlisted as one of the local deserving projects for young people in contention for an award from AIB through the Better Ireland Programme. The Fethard branch will share out €10,000 between the three short listed projects with first place receiving €5,000, second place €3,000 and third place €2,000 that will be ranked in order by public votes cast over a four-week period from 15th February to the 15th March 2010.
We appeal to our local community to support Fethard Youth Centre by texting FETHARD A to 51303 (standard SMS rates apply) or vote online free by selecting the Fethard Branch of AIB and then Fethard Youth Centre. You can vote once per day up to 15th March.
The award is part of AIB’s Better Ireland Programme which supports children with physical, sensory and intellectual disabilities, children affected by drug and alcohol abuse, homelessness or a lack of access to mainstream education due to poverty and children suffering from terminal and chronic illnesses.
Clodagh Blake sent us this lovely photograph of a very friendly fox that has resided in the Kilnockin hinterland for many years and has luckily survived the many hunts to date in the area.
Fethard Youth Centre
Things are beginning to get busy at Fethard Youth Centre. There are now three computer classes underway in the Internet Café, one on a Monday night, organised by Fethard Womens’ Group, and others on Tuesday nights and Wednesday mornings, organised by Fethard & Killusty Community Council, all in conjunction with South Tipperary VEC. It is anticipated that a variety of additional computer courses will be introduced in the coming months.
The Youth Centre itself opens weekly on Friday and Saturday nights from 8pm to 10pm. This facility operates as a drop-in centre for members aged from 13 to 19 years and is manned by adult volunteers. It is believed that Fethard Youth Centre is the only volunteer led and volunteer run youth centre in the country.
There are currently approximately eighty members affiliated to the centre and there are fifteen trained volunteers involved. New members and adult volunteers are very welcome to come along and get involved.
In the coming weeks a number of programmes are due to commence with the assistance of youth workers from Tipperary Regional Youth Services and staff from the multimedia department of Tipperary Institute. One of these activities is the establishment of a Junior Youth Club, for those aged from 10 to 14 years. This is aimed particularly at those in the senior classes of primary school to enable them to experience the many benefits of being involved in a youth club and also to encourage them to become familiar with the youth centre.
Questionnaires have been distributed to schools in Fethard and Killusty in recent weeks by Maura Carey, outreach worker with Tipperary Regional Youth Services. However, the Junior Youth Club will be open to all those in the 10 to 14 age range who live in the Fethard area and who might not attend schools in the Parish. If you are interested in getting involved in this project or if you have a son or daughter who might like to join, please contact Maura on 087 2860991.
A meeting will be held on Thursday 4th March at 8pm in Fethard Youth Centre to progress with this and other ideas. This meeting will be attended by existing adult volunteers and potential leaders for the Junior Youth Club, as identified by the questionnaires, and the CEO of Tipperary Regional Youth Services, Cora Horgan, and members of her staff. If you are interested in becoming involved, in any capacity, as an adult volunteer please feel free to come along to this meeting. There are exciting times ahead for the young people of Fethard, why not become involved and be part of it?
Fethard Rugby Club News
The U19s hosted Cashel and both teams offered up a closely contested game that was eventually won by Cashel when they ran in for the only try of the game in the last ten minutes.
In truth the Cashel team won the territorial game in the first half but the Fethard lads defended like demons and repulsed everything Cashel threw at them and engineered a few attacks of their own. The game was all-square at half time at nil all.
Fethard started the second half very strongly and played their best rugby and were awarded with a penalty which Ben Walsh converted to give Fethard the lead. Conor Kavanagh had a great game at scrum half for Fethard at both offense and defence but Adam O'Donnell was man of the match for his defensive work. His tackle count was exceptional. Other players to impress were Kieran Power, Mark Ronan, while Eoin O'Connell was exceptional at full back. Kevin Hayes and Colm Shanahan made some great line breaking runs with Kevin being denied a try on the five-yard line after a forty meter break. Cashel rucked up field after this and their backs broke and touched down for the match-winning try which was converted to leave the final score at 7-3.

The Anglim's Yard Syndicate from Coolmore Stud, Fethard was in tip top form last Friday, as the eight lucky group members collected a sparkling Lotto Plus 1 win worth €103,500 at the National Lottery offices in Dublin. The group, who work together in Anglim's Yard in Coolmore Stud, matched five numbers plus the Bonus Number in the previous Saturday's Lotto Plus 1 draw, winning €100,000 worth of diamonds as well as the regular prize of €3,500.
"We're all absolutely thrilled," said Liam Boland, a member of the lucky group. "Our numbers certainly came up on the right night. To win €3,500 would have been great. To win €100,000 on top of that is a fantastic bonus." The group, who have been playing Lotto together for 10 years, opted to take the value of the diamonds €100,000 in cash and will share the win equally. Plans for the windfall include taking a holiday. They bought their lucky ticket in Wilson's, Kickham Street, Mullinahone.
The eight group members are Liam Boland, Eddie Croke, Michael Kennedy, Ian Goff, Tom Cummins, David O'Meara, Joe Martin and Declan Fanning, the recently appointed vice captain of the Tipperary senior hurling team. All Lotto and Lotto Plus players who matched five numbers plus the Bonus Number in the draws won diamonds worth €100,000, as well as the regular prize.
