Tipperary's first All-Ireland hurling title since 2001 thwarted Kilkenny's bid for a fifth successive Liam McCarthy Cup triumph. The final score was Tipperary 4-17, Kilkenny 1-18, Liam Sheedy's heroes produced a devastating attacking display, embellished by a Lar Corbett hat-trick as they swept to a 26th success.

Race Night to support Niall

Niall O'Riordan photographed with kids in Uruguay, now sleeping on beds, not concrete!

Niall O’Riordan is a vet from Thurles, working for the past few years in Fethard. He took a sabbatical from his job this year to help people in Uruguay who live in dire poverty. A letter that Niall sent to thank his friends for raising €300 says all that needs to be said,

“To all my friends and benefactors, On behalf of the many people in need here in Florida, Uruguay, I wish to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for the generosity you have all shown to this great cause. Many of these people really have very little, and with your money raised, we can now buy things like clothes and shoes for the kids and milk and bread for the families. It has been a very cold winter here, especially at night, and some parents had to take a loan out from the bank to buy simple things like blankets for their children. With your money, we can help these people in a great way.
Already, your money has been sent into action . . . the first €300 Denis (a work colleague of Niall’s) sent, has bought beds and mattresses for a family where the kids were sleeping on concrete floors. The mother was crying so much when we delivered the beds, which I told her was a present from Ireland, she thanked the people who sent the beds profoundly and declared that she would pray for them every night.

The community that I’m working with here get nothing from the government, so donations are all we depend on. I will keep you updated on where the rest of your money goes. Niall.”

A race night will be held to support Niall’s cause in McCarthy’s on Friday 17th September. Every cent gathered goes directly to Niall, so nothing will be lost in administration. There will also be a number of items donated for auction by friends and supporters of Niall (like tickets to Ireland v All Blacks etc) on the night. Come along and help this very worthy cause.
