Much anticipated Annual Patrician/Presentation Awards Day 2013

The Patrician Presentation Annual Awards’ Ceremony and the Opening of the School Year Mass took place in the School Hall on Friday, October 11. The Mass was concelebrated by Fr. Gerry Horan, OSA and Parish Priest, Fr. Tom Breen who asked for God’s Blessing on the school during the coming year and encouraged all present to place their trust in God and to do their best during the year. Music for the Mass was provided by Benny and Michael Raggett with the School Choir led by Ms Megan Raggett.
This year’s guest speaker was Mr Denis Burke who was introduced by our new principal, Mr Michael O’Sullivan. Mr O’Sullivan acknowledged the hard work of those present and not just the award winners. Many had strived to do their best and he believes that they represent the true spirit of our school. He said that in Patrician Presentation, we aim high, driven by our Christian values, where the dignity of work in the pursuit of excellence reflects our enduring belief in gospel teachings and in our God-given talents. Mr O’Sullivan went on to congratulate all the award winners and to encourage other students to take the risk, to rise to the challenge and not to be afraid to compete both in school and in life.
Finally, he complimented the organising committee of the event: Mr John Cummins, Ms Marie Maher and Ms Caitriona McKeogh, Ms Megan Raggett and the school choir, deputy principal Ms Fogarty, caretaker Connie O’Sullivan, secretary Gwen Cronin and all the staff.
Our guest speaker Mr Burke talked about his experience of the school as a past-pupil, as a retired teacher of the school and as a parent of children who attended the school. He enumerated the many qualities of the school and said that he is proud to be connected with the school. Mr Burke went on to urge the pupils to have pride in themselves, in their school and in their town. He asked the pupils to take responsibility for themselves and to be pro-active both in school and at home. This means doing things for themselves and taking charge of their lives.

The parents of award-winning pupils were guests at the ceremony as well as the officers of the Parents’ Association, members of the Board of Management, Sr. Juliana of the Presentation Order and Mr John Palmer, Area Manager AIB. Retired staff members Mrs Marian Gilpin and Mr Paddy Broderick, who have presented perpetual awards to the school, were also in attendance. The following awards were presented: 1st Year Pupil of the Year 2012-2013: Shauna O’Neill, Lisronagh. 2nd Year Pupil of the Year 2012-2013: Kate Davey, Farranshea. 5th Year Pupil of the Year 2012-2013: Michelle Walsh, Killusty. The winner of the prestigious Bishop Delaney Award of €2000 for the best Leaving Cert Results 2013 was Ms Emma Hayes. Emma is daughter of Anthony and Jane Hayes, Burke Street, Fethard, and is currently studying in University College Cork. This award was sponsored by the school’s Board of Management.

Pattens Gardens in the 1940s
Paddy Fitzgerald, a former worker in Canon Patten's garden at Fethard Rectory and now living in North Wales, is photographed here with Richard Welch, Canon Patten's grandson, and Joe and Caleb Welch, Canon Patten's great grandson and great-great grandson all of whom now live in North Wales. Paddy sends his greeting to all who remember the Rectory gardens.
Richard Cecil Patten (born January 9, 1872) was Rector of Holy Trinity Church of Ireland, Fethard, from 1904 until his death on October 8, 1942. He and his family resided at The Rectory where, apart from a large walled garden, there were about fifteen acres of land at the Glebe but very few amenities. All the water had to be pumped and the drinking water carted from the town - so help for the garden, milking, and other tasks was essential.
By 1930, Canon Patten become fascinated by alpine plants and had made an extensive rock garden in the field immediately in front of the house. This garden gave him great pleasure and he continued to produce the bedding and herbacious plants. Woolworth's of Clonmel sold quantities of his plants. The nursery had by this time long out grown the old walled garden, where large greenhouses and frames had followed the original small green-house; two of the fields were in use for the propagation of perennials, etc. The nursery gave great employment in the area and in the height of the selling season additional boys were taken on when as many as twenty-five people might be working. The late Miss Phyllis O'Connell did all his secretarial work.
After his death in 1942, Mrs. A.C. Vigors took over the nursery, keeping it for a year at the Rectory and then moving it to her home at Tullamaine Castle and later to Coolmore House. The nursery was known as ‘Pattens Gardens’ and continued on at least into the mid 1950s.

Fethard Players are currently rehearsing a wonderful play ‘Miss Rose White’ by Barbara Lebow, which will be staged in the Abymill Theatre from Wednesday, November 20, to Sunday, November 24.
The television film adaptation of the 1985 play, first aired on April 26, 1992, received five Emmy Awards as well as the Humanitas Prize in the 90 minute category - an award intended to promote human dignity, meaning, and freedom.
Richard’s UN Day in Addis Ababa

Fethard were well represented in this year’s UN Day in Ethiopia held on Friday, October 25. Richard Robinson, Watergate, Fethard, a former pupil of Holy Trinity National School, is now living in Ethiopia with his parents, Catherine and Tim, while they undertake work on a Concern development programme for two years.
Young Richard has settled into his new environment very well and his new school, Sandford International, has proved to be an enlightening experience with pupils from more than 50 different nationalities attending. For this year’s UN Day celebrations on October 25, the pupils all dressed up in whatever national costume they could find and paraded their appropriate flags. Richard wore his medieval Irish leine and brat while also carrying the tricolour. Afterwards hundreds of the children brought their national dishes and a huge buffet was held in the school grounds. Richard cooked Irish Stew using the legendary recipe handed down by his late granny, Mary Corcoran, nee Quinn.
Richard is looking forward to sharing his many adventures by Skyping his Fethard school friends at Holy Trinity National School.

The Ballyluskey White Heather Harriers will hold their opening meet on Sunday next, November 3, in Drangan starting at 11am. All are welcome.
‘Seasons Eatings’ coming soon
Lovers of good food and cooking should make a note of Friday, December 6, because on that date Cloneen Sports & Social Club are hosting 'Seasons Eatings', a celebration of Christmas Day cooking with author, broadcaster and chef instructor Frank Moynihan at Cloneen Hall at 8pm. This is a night not to be missed, so write it in your diary. Tickets on sale soon.
Jump Start Games resumed in Fethard Ballroom on Tuesdays
Following on from the launch of the Jump Start Games in Fethard in the Spring of this year and the enjoyable day the group from Fethard, Killenaule, Clonmel, Carrick-on-Suir had at the Go For Life National Games at Dublin City University in June, the group has been back in the swing of things in over the last few weeks and resumed Jump Start Games in Fethard Ballroom at 2pm on Tuesdays.
The group play three games which are based on some of the activities played by Go for Life groups around the country - ‘Lobbers’ (a target game adapted from petanque and boules), ‘Flisk’ (adapted from boccia and horseshoe pitching), and ‘Scidils’ (an adaptation of ten pin bowling with one skittle).
Our participants are drawn from a number of local groups such as ICA, Active Retirement Associations, Probus and others but we would very much live to invite anyone who would like to join us to drop in for an hour or so of light competition mixed with a great social atmosphere and cup of tea to recharge the batteries afterwards.

Nellie celebrates her 100th Birthday

Congratulations to Nellie Shortall, The Valley, Fethard, who celebrated her 100th birthday on Thursday, October 24, with family, relatives and her many friends at a special Mass in the Parish Church and reception afterwards in the Convent Community Centre.

This occasion was extra special as it also marked the third centenarian to celebrate their birthday in our parish this year. Indeed a unique occasion that may not be repeated in a long, long time. The other two centenarians are Chrissie Byrne, Killusty, who celebrated her 100th birthday on June 19 and Josie Casey, Derryluskin, Fethard, on September 3.
Fethard Bridge Club

Fethard and District Rugby Club
Great conditions in Waterpark on last Sunday when a small number of U7s and U8s joined forces to play two fine teams in Waterpark and Waterford City. Our combined team stepped up their game to score many tries in both games. New recruits Noah O'Flynn and Adam Ruttle tackled to beat the band and fine passing and chasing by the young players Harry O'Toole, Shane Ryan and Gavin Neville resulted in fine performances. Padraig O'Connor and Andrew Wall recorded more tries with Elle Luke great with her tackles and support.
U9s played two excellent games with fine play from Padraig O'Dwyer, Tomas Ryan, Louis Ryan and Jack Quinlan in rucking and tackling. Mark Neville with Joseph O'Flynn supported by David McCormack, Michael James Phelan and Luke Ryan upped their games once again to put in solid performances in their recycling of the ball, rucking and strong tackles. Well done to all.
Thanks to the parents for their support and Waterpark for their wonderful hospitality.
Next week Sunday, November 3, all minis from U7s to U12s are at home to Clanwilliam and Cashel. We look forward to a good turn out of players and supporters.
Our U11s took on Waterpark and Waterford City. In our first match against City we were a little slow out of the blocks but in the second half we really upped the gears and showed what we are capable of. Our second match against Waterpark was a completely different affair both teams seemed better matched, the rucking and mauling from both teams was top class the scoreboard reflected this at half time with scores level. In the second half Fethard upped both pace and tempo using the full width of the pitch to their full advantage and running in some fine tries, Waterpark responded well but they were met with a wall of blue.
This was a great morning with Fethard triumphing on both occasions. There is still room for improvement on certain areas of their game. Looking forward to seeing all at training on Friday night.

Died Recently
 The death has occured on Sunday, October 27, of former TD, MEP and Minister for Education, Noel Davern, at the age of 67.
Noel from Tannersrath,
Clonmel, was a Teachta Dála (TD) for Tipperary South from 1969 to 1981 and from 1987 until he retired from politics at the 2007 general election. He was a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from 1979 to 1984, and served as Minister for Education from 1991 to 1992.
In June 1991 while Minister for Education, Noel was instumental in getting the long awaited 'go-ahead' to proceed with the proposed extension to Fethard's Patrician Presentation Secondary School. At a public meeting in Fethard Noel promised that a letter from the Dept. of Education would be received within two days. The public meeting was also attended by Bill O’Sullivan (parents representative), Br. Cormack (chairman Board of Management), Marian Gilpin (staff representative) and Fr. Lambe, who chaired the meeting.
He is survived by his wife Anne Marie and their children Don, Marc and Davina. RIP

Christmas Shoebox Appeal
The Christmas Shoebox Appeal is an Irish project that promises to get your 'Christmas Shoebox' into the hands of a needy child in Eastern Europe. All they ask is for you to fill a shoebox with a range of simple Christmas gifts, and drop it off at your local drop off point in Fethard before November 11. All you need to do is get an average size shoebox (or a plastic storage container would also be great), and wrap it with Christmas paper. Choose who you'd like to receive your gift – a boy or a girl, in one of three age groups: 2-4 years, 5-9 years or 10-14 years.
