Benefit night for baby Ella
Ella was born on July 7, she was born with complications and was moved to Temple Street where she had surgery. Ella needs further surgery. There is a benefit night in Butlers Sportsbar on Saturday, October 12. Ella remains in Temple Street for the foreseeable future. We would appreciate your support.

The grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren of Michael Burke, Cloran (1861-1932) and his wife Ellen (1875-1913) gathered in Cloneen on Saturday afternoon, September 28, for a commemorative ceremony in honour of Michael and Ellen. Following Mass in Cloneen church, Fr. Tony Lambe blessed the recently restored Burke family grave in the adjoining ceremony. After the dedication at the graveside, over seventy family members adjourned to the Cloneen Community Hall for an afternoon of reminiscences and recollections. Of the seventeen surviving grandchildren, some of whose lives have taken them to far-flung places such as Hawaii and Australia, some nearer home in England and Ireland, eleven attended the gathering in Cloneen.

Patrician Presentation Jottings
Open Evening 2013
The school’s Open Evening will be held this month, date to be announced. All parents of 5th and 6th Class pupils are cordially invited to attend the Open Evening with their parents and to meet our New Principal, Mr Michael O’Sullivan. Further details will be available in future jottings.
Ploughing Championships
The Transition Year Pupils and those pupils studying Agricultural Science in the school visited the Ploughing Championship in Co. Laois last week. They were accompanied by their Agricultural Science Teacher, Mr Maher and Ms Margaret O’Neill, Home School Community Liaison Officer.
School Shop
Three enterprising TY pupils, Orla Walsh, Katie Whyte and Michael O’Mahoney have taken over the franchise of the school shop and plan to re-open the shop in the coming days. Ms Mulhall will act as auditor and mentor to the group.
Day Care Centre
The TY pupils have started back on their work in the Day Care Centre where they help out twice weekly with the Meals-on-Wheels Programme. Ms Geraldine McCarthy from the Day Care Centre visited the school to meet pupils prior to the commencement of this year’s programme.
Lunchtime Volleyball
All pupils may avail daily of the lunchtime volleyball facility. There is also a Board Game Club in the school which is organised by Ms Burke and meets at lunchtime on Mondays.
Coffee Morning in aid of the Hospice
A coffee morning for staff was held in the school on Thursday, September 19, in conjunction with the local Hospice Coffee Morning Organiser. The school is a long-time supporter of the event with retired teacher Ms Mary O’Sullivan liaising with the community in the past. This year Ms McKeogh organised the event in the school.
Fethard ICA
Fethard ICA will hold their monthly meeting on Tuesday, October 8, in the ICA Hall, Rocklow Road, at 8pm. Guest speaker will be horticulturalist Linda who will give us ideas on tidying up the garden before winter comes. The ‘Blue Group’ will cater.
At our September meeting votes of heartfelt sympathy were extended to our Hon. Secretary, Margaret Phelan, her husband Robert and family, on the sudden death of her son Martin, and to Mary O’Donnell on the death of her husband Denis. May they both rest in peace.
Congratulations to two of our members who both won first prizes for their baking skills. Sheila O’Donnell won first prize for ‘The Traditional Bramley Seedling Tart’ at the Apple Fest held at the Apple Farm, Cahir. There was a large entry and the judge was well-known chef Darina Allen. Ann Horan won first prize for her honey fruitcake and this competition was held at the Honey Show in Clonmel.
Well done ladies for keeping the flag flying for home-cooking.
Sports Achievement nominations for September
Daily Stars hoping to be monthly stars – Colin Allen and Shane Kenny who were part of the team to win the Star Newspaper All-Ireland Golf Society Challenge. Both were nominated for the September achievement award.
The nominations for Fethard Sports Achievement Award for September are as follows:
- Sandra Maher – Scored 3 goals and 2 points in Fethard’s recent ladies football junior semifinal. Following this victory they now go on to play Bansha in the county final.
- Pat Smith – Local golfer who recently won the Presidents prize at Slievenamon golf club.
- Eugene Walsh and Mick O’Mahoney – Coaches and mentors to Fethard’s U14 hurling team who recently won a county title beating Thurles in the semifinal and Sologhead in the final.
- Aine Doocey – Local athlete who recently finished 1st in her category at the Kilsheelan 10k road race.
- Shane Kenny and Colin Allen – Two local golfers while representing the Bridge House Bar in Golden were part of the team to win the Star newspaper all Ireland golf society challenge.
- Nat McCarthy – Local golfer who recently won the prestigious Carrigan cup at Slievenamon golf club.
- Kiltinan Stud – Breeders and owners of ‘The Fugue’, recent winner of the Group 1 Red Mills Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown.
- Fintan Rice – Fintan continued his good form during September with victory in the Kilsheelan 10k road race and second place in the Cashel Rock 8k race.
- P.J. Colville – A first time nominee whose horse ‘Asockastar’ recently won a maiden hurdle race at the Listowel Harvest Festival meeting.
- Sean O’Donovan and Kay Lyons – Tipperary Intermediate ladies footballers have reached an All-Ireland final and are fortunate to have local people Sean and Kay as manager and administrator respectively.
- Majella Smyth and Mary Kenrick – Both were members of the Slievenamon Golf Club county league winning team. They beat Thurles in the quarter-final, Cahir in the semifinal and Templemore in the final.
The September winner will be announced at a function in Butlers Bar on Friday, October 4th, at 10pm
Tidy Towns marks up again

Fethard Tidy Towns have been awarded 254 marks this year, a steady increase of 14 marks over the last four years. A substantial amount of work has taken place and we would like to thank everyone for all their help and support in the town.
A special comment was made on the entrance from Cashel with the splendid new trees blending in so well with the mature trees of the area. We were also commended on the lovely finger signage and tourist information boards. The amount of litter and graffiti around the town is also reducing.
Landscaping around the town was described as brilliant with splashes of tasty flowers and scrubs adding freshness and colour to the square. Two new areas on the Grove Road have now been completed with new wild flowers and grass set.
The housing estates were described as nicely presented with impressive displays of scrubs, trees, lawns and flowers. Well done to all involved.
The overall general impression was that it was a pleasure to visit our nice town and that we have great potential for further enhancement and we are making steady progress. Once again thank you to all our sponsors, committee members and the Fethard community for all there outstanding work in 2013.
Fethard Minis’ Rugby
Great to see players returning back to Fethard Rugby these past weeks at training on Friday evenings in the Community Field from 6.45pm to 8pm. Furthermore it is wonderful to welcome the new players to the club.
We have our first minis’ game of the season on Sunday, October 6, at home to Kilfeacle and Galbally. This is for ages U7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12. The kick-off is at 10.30am and we look forward to seeing our players on the pitch and welcoming all family support for the teams on the day.
Girls’ U18 and U15 rugby training takes place on Friday nights from 8pm to 9pm. New players always welcome.

Fethard-to-Fethard Outing

An early morning start saw twenty members of the Fethard Historical Society take the road to Wexford last Saturday 28th September. First stop, New Ross where we spent almost an hour with our lovely guide Lisa who took us through the 12 completed Ros tapestry panels depicting the history of the Normans in Wexford, from their first landing at Bannow Beach in 1169. The panels also feature the establishment of the town of New Ross and the building of such wonderful churches of St. Mary’s and Tintern Abbey. We heard of Dermot McMorrough, Stongbow and Aoife, William Marshall and Isabel de Clare and their descendants. The panels also incorporate references to the lifestyle and customs of the native Irish, showing clearly the differences between the two cultures.
Each panel is an entity in itself, worked in fine wool on linen, each with its own distinctive style. It takes hours of painstaking work to complete even one square inch of tapestry and one can only wonder at the dedication and expertise of the army of volunteers who have contributed to the making of the panels. They are a source of inspiration to historian and craftsperson alike affording a glimpse into the many facets of medieval life. There are three panels still to complete, two of which are being worked on in Wexford, the third featuring the Battle of Ossory is, appropriately, being done in Kilkenny.
Visitors are spoiled for choice when it comes to eating in New Ross but we can certainly recommend both the Dunbrody Café and The Nutshell up on South Street.
Video presentation at the J.F. Kennedy Homestead in Dunganstown
Following a quick browse at the local Country market, we were back on the bus and heading for the Kennedy Homestead in Dunganstown. The new Visitor’s Centre gives a detailed overview of the Kennedy/ Fitzgerald families, their Irish roots and their life in America. The exhibition includes many personal mementoes of the late JFK including some of his letters both to his own family and to his cousins in Ireland. There is also a copy of his book Profiles in Courage as well as the rosary beads he carried with him on the fateful day of his assassination in Dallas. There are video presentations of his inauguration as President, his visit to Ireland and the White House tour with Jacqueline Kennedy.
Hook Head Lighthouse and restaurant
The highlight for many people was the visit to Hook Head Lighthouse, the oldest operational lighthouse in the world, where another excellent guided tour brought to life the amazing story of the lighthouse from its foundation by William Marshall in the early 13th century right down to the present day. We were blessed with a fine day and, having climbed the requisite 115 steps, were rewarded with superb views from the third floor balcony. Our guide told us that on really clear days it is possible to see Slievenamon on the western horizon. Conversely, if one is up on Slievenamon at night and sees a three-point life flashing in the east, that is the light from Hook Head.

At this point we were joined by local guide Eileen Cloney-Kehoe who took us on a whistle-stop tour of the Hook peninsula. We visited the Knight’s Templar Church at Templetown and saw the recently discovered tomb of one of the Knights; an amazing find after so many centuries. We walked along Beginbun Head where the second wave of Normans, under Raymond le Gros, arrived in 1170. One can still clearly see the ditches they threw up as defences against the Gaelic and Norse warriors who failed in their attempts to oust the invader. We skirted Bannow Bay and made a brief stop at the lovely Tintern Abbey, its’ golden sandstone mellow in the evening light. Some of us even had enough stamina to visit the 15th century castle in Fethard-on-Sea before settling in Neville’s gastropub where fine dining is the order of the day.

Our trip more than fulfilled our expectations and we are already planning a return trip to visit, among others, such places as Tintern Abbey, the Colclough Walled Garden and Loftus Hall.
Fethard Underage Social Experience
Volunteers required at Fethard Underage Social Experience (FUSE) - a youth club for children aged 9-12, affiliated with Tipperary Regional Youth Service (TRYS).
This is an ideal opportunity for someone interested in a child-focused career, for example those attracted to teaching or child-care. Interested individuals aged 18+ should telephone Clodagh Murphy at Tel: 087-6983040. FUSE is held on Monday evenings at Fethard Convent Community Centre. Volunteers will receive training. Garda Clearance for volunteers will be necessary.
Social Dancing at Fethard Ballroom
Dancing at Fethard Ballroom on this Sunday Night, October 6, to the music of ‘Coupla’. All welcome to come along and enjoy a great night’s entertainment and social dancing. Dancing 9pm to midnight and admission is €7.
Circuits classes are back
Stay fit for the winter by taking part in circuits classes every Tuesday in Fethard Ballroom starting October 8. Classes run from 7.15pm to 8.15pm and the cost is €7 per class. All fitness levels catered for. For more information contact Bobbi Holohan on 087 2130414.

Cake Sale thanks
A cake sale was held in the Fethard Convent Community hall on Sunday, September 29, of in aid of the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association, Thank you to everyone who turned out to support this very good cause. Thank you to Helena O'Shea and the committee of the convent hall for the kind use of the venue, also to everyone who helped bake and make the day a success. A total of €240 was raised.
