In recent years the end of summer holidays and reopening of schools has been marked by a vast improvement in the weather. This year was no different. One can only observe that if both continue to be so related it might be a good idea to return to school a few weeks earlier so we can enjoy a decent spell of weather! That suggestion may not be popular or even practical but neither was the recent ‘summer’ we’ve had to endure.

Nevertheless, September is a milestone in our young people’s lives. The first day at ‘big’ school for Junior Infants, which in these times is far less traumatic with the introduction of crèches, playgroups and playschools where children can meet other children and learn the art of survival without parents . . . at least for short intervals of time.
On Monday last it was lovely to see the children make their way to school, in glorious sunshine, some full of excitement and others trepidation, and their experienced teachers, as usual, prepared for every eventuality in their classroom.

It is widely accepted that school days are the most important days of our lives, a place where our character is moulded and developed. In years to come it may be unlikely that all teachers will remember every child that he or she taught, but it is almost certain that every child will remember their teacher and their first day at school. A beautiful friendship begins that can last a lifetime.

Archaeologist Jim Crane supervising dig at Pierce's Gate, Barrack Street, to determine where the medieval town wall crossed the road.

Work is currently in progress to mark the line of the Fethard Wall where it crosses the public road on Lower Main Street, Watergate, Burke Street and Barrack Street. These four sites will identify where the original gateways and town wall were located before they were demolished.

The work will be completed by South Tipperary County Council who have received Ministerial Consent from the Department and under the direction of an employed archaeologist. The markings will be of split limestone and have a rough cobbled looking face and will be carried out at all gateways except the existing North Gate.

New signage designed to state what the markings mean will also be erected in the relevant sites.

Emigrant’s Newsletter!
Preparations have begun for the publication of this years Emigrant’s Newsletter, which is printed and posted free of charge to our emigrants and families living abroad in time for Christmas every year.
We now invite submissions of articles and photographs for inclusion in this year’s edition. The Newsletter covers all generations of emigrants and it would be nice to see more young people submit articles. The article need not be long. It might just be a funny incident, a local character you remember, a particular event, school time or any other recollection that may surface.

Recently we held a very successful ‘Green and Barrack Street Reunion’ and it was clearly obvious how everyone just loved chatting and reminiscing about people and times past. The popularity of the Emigrants Newsletter is for very similar reasons. People love reading stories that rekindle memories of people and places long forgotten. So please consider putting pen to paper, or voice to recorder, and submit an article for this year’s issue. Photographs are also very welcome.
Articles or photographs can be submitted to Joe Kenny, Rocklow Road, Fethard, or by email to newsletter@fethard.com

Kung Fu and Self Defence School
Chris Dougliss has well over 30 years experience in learning and teaching Kung Fu. He became proficient at Lau Gar Kung Fu attaining Black Belt status before progressing to Hung Gar Kung Fu, which is a very traditional style, known for its low stances, hard blocks and furious attacks.

This Chinese Martial Art has been practised for in excess of two hundred years, but its origins go back much further than that to the Southern Shaolin Temple of Fujian and is renowned for its Tiger and Crane form and its hard fighting style. That is not to say that Hung Gar doesn’t have its soft side, as many of the forms incorporate the development of Chi, or energy, most popularly shown in Tai Chi.
Chris ran the successful Hung Gar Kung Fu Club in Clonmel for 5 years before work and time constraints forced him to forego this project. However, most of the Students from the Club continued to train in his purpose built ‘kwoon’ or school at his home.

Since then Chris has continued teaching and has included general cardiovascular fitness and kickboxing in what he teaches. Anyone is welcome to come and join them on Wednesday and Friday evenings at 7pm, the only condition being that you come with an open mind and be willing to push yourself close to your limits.

The end result of all the above is a complete Martial Art that has very practical self-defence properties and also increases overall levels of fitness, regardless of the fitness levels of new students and also increases self-esteem and confidence. But a word of warning, this is not a ‘fast food’ Martial Art, you can expect to be sore after the initial training session as you will be using muscles, ligaments and tendons in ways they have not been used before. However, for those who persevere, the results of constant training and application of techniques are more than worth the initial pain.

So if you think you have what it takes, and are willing to push yourself whilst learning Self Defence, Kung Fu, Kickboxing or just improving your general fitness levels, why not give Chris a call on 087-6244449. There are no membership or gym fees, you pay as you go, and if you want some one-on-one private training, this can also be arranged at a mutually convenient time. Remember, it’s better to know self-defence and not need it, than to need it and not know it.

Fethard & Killusty Community Council
The next meeting of Fethard & Killusty Community Council will take place on Tuesday, September 11, in the Tirry Community Centre at 8.30pm.

Bunny Hop reopens on September 10
Bunny Hop music and movement for 0-4 year olds will reopen again in Fethard on Monday, September 10, at Fethard Youth Centre / Old Convent Hall from 10am to 11am. Within the hour we do a wide variety of stimulating songs with actions, musical instruments and lots more, interacting with children same or similar age. Music is a very important part of a child’s development, making them aware of different sounds, developing their memory, new skills and introducing a new environment. There is a free playtime afterwards.
All are welcome and for further information and to join us contact Nicola at 087 6742401 or visit bunnyhop.ie
