Fethard Athletic Club
Fethard AC members who were in action at the cross-country hosted by Moyne AC last weekend L to R: Jennifer Rice, Biddy O'Dwyer, Kate O'Donnell, Leah Fox, Joan Fox and Ruth O'Meara.
The hinterland of Lisheen Mines near Mary Willies was the venue for the Tipperary Ladies and Gents and even-age cross-country on Sunday last. The towering windmills, lovely level lush grass of the pasture and the precise marking of the course all contributed to make a wonderful venue for the day’s sport.
Fethard AC, or for those not disposed to athletics, the ‘running club’, had three teams in action. Our ladies team under18 years comprising of Jennifer Rice, Katie O'Donnell and Leah Fox were the first to enter the fray and came away with silver medals in the event. Being the first time that the latter two had run in this kind of an event made it all the more remarkable. Well done and thanks for the cooperation from their parents who also turned out to support them and the club.
Next up were the novice ladies comprising of Ruth O’Meara, Biddy O’Dwyer and Nicola Quigley who were also on their maiden voyage at this sport. They finished strongly as a team but were out of the medals.
The novice men’s team looked strong during the week but work, holidays and injuries left us a bit short on the day. Nevertheless our quartet of Fintan Rice, Andy McBride, Michael Moclair and Michael Magic Ryan gave a splendid display. Well done!
Fethard & District Rugby Club
Fethard Under 7 rugby team who were in action on Sunday, October 6 for the Fethard & District Rugby Club.
A great turnout to the Fethard Community Field last Sunday to witness huge groups from all around the area turn out to play rugby from U7s right up to U18s.
The U7s turned out in force for their first inter-club challenge. The squad saw Gavin Neville work well with Adam Ruttle, Sean Fitzgerald, Joseph Fitzgerald, Charlie Walsh, Bill Smyth, Lee Delaney, Troy Delaney, Codi Grogan, Sam Austin, Jack Stokes, Joseph Gayle, Sam Wyse and Noah O'Flynn. Theses young players are learning their skills with good fun and we look forward to the season ahead with them.
Our U8s played a lively Galbally team and performed well for their first game of the season. They stepped up to the mark well with tries from Oscar Staunton Croke. We had great tackling and robbing of ball from Padraig Duggan and a few tries from fearsome tackler Andrew Wall with fine tackles and rucking-over from Oisín Ryan and Brian Cormac Hayes. We also had tries from Liam Kiely with fine runs and smart tackling and driving from Elle Luke – not forgetting the continuous tackling from Finn Madigan. Well done boys and girls. Keep it up.
U9s squad are back training well and have a lovely squad and enjoyed their inter-club challenge and all performed well together. The squad last Sunday was Louis Ryan, Tom Smyth, Anna Quigley, Tomas Ryan, Jack Quinlan, David McCormack, Michael Blake, Mark Neville, Joseph Flynn, Clodagh Foley, William Cleere, Robbie Noonan and Daithi Hogan.
Sunday last saw our U10s and11s take to the field against two good sides from Kilfeacle and Galbally, in what were impressive games of rugby. Our U10s had only the one game against a strong team from Galbally, this was an exciting game to watch with Fethard coming out on top. We were unfortunate with the numbers that turned up on Sunday with players off with colds and flue. Looking forward to seeing all at training on Friday night.
Fethard under-11 rugby team
Under 11 Rugby
Our U11s played two games against Kilfeacle and Galbally. We drew against Kilfeacle in our first match our lads looked a bit on the rusty side, with the team taking a bit of time to adjust to the new rules. In our second match the rustiness had almost vanished, whilst we won the game there is a fair bit to improve on, and it only October this bunch of lads should do well in the coming season, looking forward to seeing all at training on Friday night.
We would like to thank. Thanking everyone very much from coaches, everyone who brought food and those who helped out in the kitchen to make it a great morning.
Next game for the Minis (U7 up to U12) at home Sunday, October 13, to Thurles. Training every Friday from 6.45pm to 8pm. See you there.
Under 12 Rugby
One good thing about the weeks rain was that the ground was now soft enough to allow our U12 Mini rugby season to start. Galbally and Kilfeacle were our first visitors and brought with them determination and strength; looking to stamp their authority on the game early in the year.
First up Galbally played with all the passion you might expect and in the ideal conditions kept the Fethard U12s within their sights; as the game progressed, however, Fethard put some distance between the two teams and whilst they could never relax, Fethard ran out comfortable winners.
Kilfeacle took to the pitch with a heavy pack and some strong running centres, ably guided by the scrum-half; Scrummaging was excellent from both teams who have easily adopted the new scrum laws and along with text book line-outs all the Forward play was a pleasure to watch; two very evenly matched and competent packs. Kilfeacle ran two very strong centres and had support out wide, Fethard’s backs were similarly strong in defence and incisive when attacking. The scores came for both teams and there was nothing in it for the bulk of the match, indeed if the ref. had blown on time it would have been a draw but play was allowed to go over the clock and Kilfeacle snatched a last second winner. Great game, well done both teams.
Fethard seniors played their fourth game of the season on Saturday evening last and clocked up their third win. This young team played a great open game to defeat a fine Thurles side by 5 points to 3. Matthew Ryan getting the vital try when a back row move involving Chris Large put Conor Kavanagh into space, and drew the man, giving the try scoring pass to the elusive Matthew.
This was a fine all round performance with Kevin Hall cleaning up in the line outs, the even green Paul Scully, Rob Bannister, Kevin Hayes and Brian Murphy being very effective. In the backs Declan Doyle, Shane Kavanagh and Alan O'Connor were always strong in defence and were unlucky not to score a few more tries. Dean Tobin was solid at full back. In previous games we had fine wins over Portumna and Fermoy. Joe Murphy, Robert Hall, Chris Bannister, JR McGrath and Nicko Hoynes had mighty performances in these games. Training continues every Tuesday and Friday at 8pm.
Fethard U16s victorious over Clonmel and Waterford City in League
Fethard U16 clocked up their second win in the league on Sunday morning last, having previously secured a solid win over Clonmel by 27 points to 17. Adding to their victories, they had a fine win over a spirited Waterford City this weekend, 17- 0. Fethard who are often slow to start came into the game well and some fine forward play saw the ball spread wide for winger Jack Kealy to touch down in the corner.
Fethard withheld a lot of pressure and eventually got up the field to be awarded with a solid try just before half time. The second half was very evenly contested and a Fethard breakaway saw Gearóid Fahy touch down under the post. Michael Gaynor, Bill Phelan, Tim Daly and John Clancy were superb in the forwards while Jake Murphy in his first game, was the pick of the backs. Training every Friday evening at 6.45pm. New players welcome as always.

Fethard Ladies Football
Fethard U12 girls played out their county league ‘blitz format’ finals in Littleton. They played three games against Templemore, Moyle Rovers and Mullinahone. The first game ended in a hard fought draw against a very good Templemore side. In the second game we played Moyle rovers, trailing by two points at half-time Fethard dug deep and came out on top by a point in a nail biting finish. Game three was the decider to be crowned league champions. The Fethard girls put in a terrific performance to win by two points and take the spoils.
On behalf of the club we would like to congratulate and thank all the players, parents and selectors on what was a very successful year. Best of luck to those moving up to U14 next year
Commiserations to our Junior B Ladies who lost out to Galtee Rovers in their county final played in Ballylooby. In what was a high scoring game it was Galtee’s ability to pick off scores from out field that made the difference at the end. Unlucky ladies. On behalf of the club we would like to thank all the players and selectors for their huge efforts this year.
