The Junior Ladies championship campaign came to an end in Monroe after a quarter-final loss to Clonmel Commercials. The concession of a quick goal and a point in the opening minutes didn't do anything to settle our team. Despite several attacks on the Commercials defence, particularly in the second half, we just couldn't take our scores. On more than one occasion, possession lost well inside the Commercials half was punished with a score at the other end of the field.

Fethard scores on the day came from Lucy Butler (0-1), Sandra Spillane (0-1), Marian Harrington (0-2), Sarah Smyth (0-1) and Sandra Maher (0-1). A huge thank you to Willie O'Meara, Kieran Treacy and Tomás Keane for their marvellous work during the year, and to all the Junior Ladies team for their tireless effort and 100% commitment in 2012. Best of luck to Commercials in the semi-final.
On Saturday, September 22, the club will hold a ‘Cash for Clobber’ fundraiser. If you have any old clothes, shoes, bags, soft toys etc, just pop them in a plastic bag and drop them off at our collection point in the car park of the GAA Field in Fethard between 11am and 1pm. The clothes can be in any condition. We will send everything for recycling; the more we recycle, the more we can earn for the club. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

Community Council News
The last meeting of Fethard and Killusty Community Council was held on Tuesday, September 11, in the Tirry Centre and was attended by: Joe Kenny, Edwina Newport, Deirdre Brady, Carmel Kiely, Marie Murphy, Pamela Sweeney, Joe Keane, Brian Sheehy, Thelma Griffith, Peter Grant, Tom McGrath and Maurice Moloney.

Playground
Plans for the proposed playground in Fethard are steadily making progress. An inspector from the water council visited the site and recommended fencing the entire river area as a safety precaution. Other than that he was very happy with the site. We are awaiting for an engineer from the senior planning department to inspect the site.
The layout of the playground in relation to the overall site development was discussed and it was decided to organise a meeting between the relevant involved parties the second week in October to prepare a development plan for the area when a decision on our funding application for the project was known.

The application to South Tipperary County Council was for a total of €100,000 of which 70% of that amount may be funded leaving a balance of €30,000 to be raised.

Business and Tourism Group
Fethard Business and Tourism Group, a sub-committee of the Community Council, are progressing well with their plans for the Town Hall Development. The final set of draft plans have been received from Shaffrey Associates Architects, Dublin, and will be discussed this week.

Youth Centre
Committee members met with Ms Phil Shanahan and Richard Wood, TUS supervisor, on Friday, July 13, to discuss the future of the scheme. The need for a full time manager was again stressed. There are apprenticeship schemes and internships available, both of which were only for a period of nine months. We were advised that there was no FÁS projects or other funding available.

Lisa Kavanagh, Youth officer with the VEC Clonmel, requested a meeting to help discuss the issues of the Youth Centre and the meeting was held in the Tirry Centre on the September 6. Lisa, accompanied by Carmel O’Neill, acting CEO of the Tipperary Youth Services, advised that money is available from the National Lottery Funding, and that there could be facilitator hours available which may allow a youth leader work on individual projects. A meeting was organised with young people from the relevant age groups to ask them directly what they would like to do and get their feedback before putting the application forward.

Joe Kenny suggested a meeting on Wednesday, September 26, in the Youth Centre, with regard to the management of the centre and putting some structures in place.

Fire Safety
Among the items discussed on the night it was decided to look for additional quotations for servicing the fire equipment in both the Tirry Community Centre and the Youth Centre following advice that the previous supplier was no longer in business.

Tidy Towns up six points
Joe Keane said that he was delighted that Fethard was up six points on last year in the Tidy Towns National Competition results.

Johnny Duhan at Crocanoir
The legendary singer/songwriter, Johnny Duhan, will play at Crocanoir on Saturday September 29. Johnny started his career as a fifteen-year-old front man with Granny’s Intentions, the most popular beat group in Ireland in the 1960s. After rousing Dublin with their soul touch, they moved to London, were signed to the prestigious Deram label, enjoyed considerable success and disbanded before Johnny was twenty-one. Johnny started writing folk songs, poetry and prose at this stage. In a career spanning 40 years, his greatest achievement is a quartet of epic albums - Just Another Town, To The Light, The Voyage and Flame - which correspond to the four chapters of his lyrical autobiography, ‘To The Light’. Johnny’s songs are sung worldwide in a variety of languages, thanks to the focus put on them by Christy Moore, The Dubliners, Mary Black and hosts of other Irish and international singers.

His song The Voyage has become a modern classic. Christy Moore has termed Johnny “One of our greatest songwriters.” And the late Ronnie Drew described him as, “One of my favourite songwriters”.
Concert starts at 8pm for tickets phone: (052) 9153117.
