Married Bliss for 70 years
Madge and Jimmy Hurley who celebrated 70 years of marriage on September 29
Madge and Jimmy Hurley who celebrated 70 years of marriage on September 29

Congratulations to Madge and Jimmy Hurley, Congress Terrace, who are celebrating 70 years of marriage bliss. Madge and Jimmy married in Fethard Parish Church in 1942. Jimmy recalls cycling to the church for the wedding ceremony, the main mode of transport at that time. Madge also relates that times back then were simple and people never had much or wanted for much and were very happy overall.

Madge and Jimmy are still very happy and we wish them many more years of married bliss!

Fethard U10
Last Saturday Fethard RFC U10s travelled to Ashbourne RFC for a minis blitz. Fethard lost two and won two games. We were narrowly defeated by Lisburn and Dundalk Sharks but had two great wins against Cobh Pirates and Corrib. On the day all of the Fethard team gave 100%. In our forwards Oran Ryan, Oisín Smullen, Conor Walsh and Michael Scully kept the opposition busy with some great line breaks, fine tackling, and some superb tries. Toby Collier kept the game flowing with some good interplay between backs and forwards.

In the backs Robert Wall and TJ Murphy showed a clean pair of heels to score terrific tries. Aaron Denny and our new man Daniel Boland were forever to the fore with hard tackling and great support play. Eoin O’Dwyer had a superb game and with his jinking runs left the opposition in his wake. This was a terrific performance and they should be all very proud of themselves, most especially the singing on the bus!

Fethard U17
Fethard’s U17s played Clonmel in a friendly on Sunday, October 7, which was a very competitive game for our first full game. First half was all defence with our lads putting in a lot of tackles, Kieran Whyte taking down anything that came his way. Cian O'Connell had a huge game and James Burns at scrum half played well for his maiden voyage in this position. He got injured just before half time leaving us with 14 players, Clonmel scored two tries.

It was 14-0 going into second half. Darren Prout made a fantastic cross field dash to save a certain try. Our lads woke up with Shane O'Connell, supported by the other forwards help James Burns (after a miraculous recovery) score our first try. Adam Fitzgerald went on to convert. Jodie Sheehan from the restart made great ground with the team working their way up to the Clonmel try line and David Heffernan a charge over the line to score our second try which was converted. Leaving the score 14-14, a fair result on the day.  Well done lads.

Six of the Fethard Under 15 players - Pierce Blackmore, Gary Kavanagh, Tim Daly, Bill Phelan, Andrew Phelan and John Clancy - are intent on stealing possession from the isolated Dungarvan player when the teams met on Sunday, October 7, in the Community Sportsfield.

U 17 Blitz
U17 blitz in Fethard RFC in aid of Zambia Immersion Project took place on Sunday, September 30. Eight teams took part in a very competitive competition. Fethard played Waterford City in their first game. A lot of mistakes were made but it was the first competitive game of the season for this newly formed team. Waterford City won the game 15-5. We went on to play Cashel in the semi final of the plate.

There was a big improvement on our first game with the team starting to gel. The players put in some big hits with the forwards doing a huge amount of work allowing the backs to shine. Fethard won 19-7, a great boast for the boys. The final of the plate saw the team play a strong Kilfeacle team. It was a tough game which saw our backs run in four tries with Adam Fitzgerald converting all four and Fethard only conceding one try.

Well done to all the boys and especially Shane O'Connell who played his first game of rugby, a great addition to the team. It was a great day for our U17s namely forwards: Cian O'Connell, Niall Kelly, Cathal Meagher, Adam Kealy, James Burns, Cathal O'Donnell, Shane O'Connell, Mathew Walsh, David Morgan and backs Paul Maloney, Adam Fitzgerald, Jodie Sheehan, Darren Prout and the legend that is 15 Kieran White who tacked everything that moved.

Thanks to Cashel, Waterpark, Waterford City, Kilfeacle, Carrick-on-Suir and Clan William rugby clubs for participating and well done to Waterpark Reds on winning the Cup Final.

Fethard U11
Our first away game of the season and the early start was too much for some, but having finally mustered a team Fethard faced up to Waterpark in a thrilling and hugely competitive match. Fierce tackling, strong running and good support work had Fethard going in at half-time only one point adrift. The second half saw Fethard putting in a terrific display for this early in the season and the scores came more regularly. Final score 12-9 to Fethard and a hard won victory.

Next up Dungarvan, with a physically imposing team and another hard fought game. What was encouraging here was our team’s refusal to be cowed by a bigger physical presence and we rucked and tackled like furies coming out of the game with the job well done. Our team was: Mathew Burke, Mathew Gleeson, Ian Harrington, Jack Hassett, Mark McCormack, Angus MacDonald, Sam Quigley, Richard Robinson and Eoin Walsh.

Fethard U13
Fethard U13s played their first league match at home on Sunday against Waterford City. It proved to be a good test for Fethard. Great tackling by Barry McGrath, David McCormack, Paddy Gaynor, Kieran O'Dwyer and Richard Anglim coupled with a great team performance allowed Fethard win out in the end with scores from Joe Carroll, Gavin Ryan, Peter Wall and Patrick Scully. Well done to all the team.

Club reports for Emigrant’s Newsletter!
This year’s Emigrant’s Newsletter is now underway and we remind all club secretaries to send in their annual reports as soon as possible. We also invite submissions of articles and photographs for inclusion in this year’s edition. The Newsletter covers all generations of emigrants and it would be nice to have articles covering all age groups. The item need not be long. It might recall a funny incident, a local character you remember, a particular event, school time or any other recollection that may surface. So please consider putting pen to paper, or voice to recorder, and submit an article for this year’s issue. Photographs, current or old, are also very welcome.
