Book Fair puts Fethard on Literary Map

The 17th annual Tipperariana Book Fair that took place in the Fethard ballroom last Sunday was again a very positive event for the town and the county.
At a time of bad news from all directions the Fethard Historical Society must be congratulated on organising such a successful national-scale event in such a small town. The nature of the event means that many people in education, the arts, local history and other 'bookish' disciplines come to the town and then go home and spread the news of a very lively and happening place.
The organising of the fair and the associated Book of the Year and book launch events all take a lot of time, money and effort by members of the Fethard Historical Society. The organisers are also very aware that but for the work of other voluntary committees that none of the Tipperariana events could take place. The Abymill Theatre and the Fethard Ballroom committees must be thanked for maintaining two such wonderful facilities for the benefit of the people of the town and area.

Book Fair
The book dealers – over thirty of them – came from the four corners of the country and, along with a line of Tipperary authors selling their own books, all made for a very colourful site. The Tipperariana Café, with the home baking provided, is legendary at this stage and the piano player adds a 'classy' touch to the whole event. The traditional raffle was not forgotten and the winners, in order, Margaret Slattery, Michael Walsh, Richard Bailey, Mr Hogan and Mary Butler were glad that they bought tickets to support the book fair.

Launch of Poetry Book
Saturday night saw the launch of 'Spring Song', a commemorative selection of the poetry of Rudi Holzapfel in the Abymill Theatre. Rudi lived for many years in Moanvaun, Cappawhite, had bookshops – first in Cashel, then in Tipperary town – and worked with the organisers of the Tipperariana Book Fair from the beginning until his sad death in 2005.
The launch was hosted by Fethard Historical Society and special guests were Rudi's wife Ulla and his sister Mona who now live in the city of Bonn in Germany. They told the story of a man who lived quite an extraordinary life from his birth in Paris in 1938 to transportation in his mother's arms during the war to a teenage life in California, to college in Dublin, to work in Germany, to finally ending his years in the heart of the quiet Tipperary countryside.

2013 and beyond
Hopefully the Tipperariana Book Fair can continue into the future and the second Sunday in February next year, Sunday, February 10, 2013, should again see the bookworms seeking out the Ballroom of Romance beside the town walls of Fethard. Coffee Morning for Cancer Research
A Coffee Morning to support Wendy Normile who rides in the 'St Patrick's Derby Charity Race' at the Cheltenham Festival in aid of Cancer Research will take place at Clonacody House at 11am on Wednesday, February 22.

Died Recently
 The death has occurred on Wednesday, 15th February, of Mrs Leish Fogarty (nee Cooney), Congress Terrace, Fethard, aged 87.
Reposing at her family home in Congress Terrace on Friday, 17th February, from 4pm to 8pm.
Requiem Mass in Holy Trinity Parish Church, Fethard, on Saturday at 11am, followed by interment at Calvary Cemetery.
St. Rita’s Camogie Club AGM
St. Rita's Camogie Club will hold their AGM on Friday, February 17, at 7.30pm in the Tirry Centre. All are welcome.
This year we will be starting Camogie for the following age categories U8, U10, U12 and U14. All players are welcome to join for both underage and junior teams.
Fethard Ladies Football Club
It's been a very busy two weeks for the Ladies Football Club since our AGM, as we focus on building a strong foundation for success in 2012 and beyond. Fiona Ryan and Noelle Ahearne have been selected as Registration Officers, and will be organising a registration evening in the next few weeks. Mary Shanahan has been selected as Children's Officer, and Stephen Fitzgerald has been selected as Club Secretary.
Willie O'Meara, Kieran Treacy and Tomas Keane have been confirmed as management for the Junior Ladies Team, with training commencing on Wednesday night, February 15. Training for the Under 16 team has already started, taking place every Wednesday at 7pm and Saturday at 11am. Best of luck to everyone as they take up their new positions in the Club. Fethard GAA News

Condolences to the Morrissey family in Tullamaine on their recent bereavement. During his life the late Billy Morrissey was a staunch Fethard GAA man, and gave many, many, hours of his time to the development of hurling and football in his native parish. Early in the life of the juvenile GAA Billy took over the running of the club as chairman and led by example, whether it was collecting money, transporting young fellas around the division, or county, or helping out in the field, he was always one of the first to be there when required. Billy was a senior committee member of the club for many years and a great man to fight his corner when the occasion arose. He was a great believer of fair play and always believer that youth should get its chance.
Billy was a member of the last Coolmoyne hurling team panel that contested a county final, something that he was very proud off. To his wife and family we offer the club's deepest sympathy. May the green sod rest gently on his soul.
Congratulations to our U21 football team who played in Ballylooby on Sunday last, coming away with a convincing win over out near neighbours Clonmel Og. The boys gave a skilful and determined display on the occasion and came out easy winners on a score line of Fethard 2-12 to Clonmel Og 2-05. Training continues on the usual nights, and players are asked to make a special effort this year. Well done boys.
Membership fees are now due and the few outstanding ones will be thankfully accepted by the treasurer.
Congratulations to Louis Coen, Killusty, who scooped the jackpot of €3,700 in the draw which took place in Lonergan's Bar on Wednesday, February 8.
The numbers drawn were 11, 14, 17 and 21. Louis and family are long time supporters of the draw and this is the second jackpot win in the Coen family following Colm's win some years ago. Our €50 Lucky Dip winner was Maureen McCarthy, Derryluskin. Thanks to Clonmel Oil Co. Ltd. who kindly sponsored printing of tickets. Next Week's Jackpot will re-start at €2000.

Sacrament of Confirmation
Children from the Parish of Fethard and Killusty will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation in Holy Trinity Parish Church, Fethard, on Friday, March 2, from His Grace, Most Rev Dr. Dermot Clifford, Archbishop of Cashel and Emly.

Fitness Walking
South Tipperary Sports Partnership will run their 'FleetFeet Programmer' – five sessions of indoor fitness walking – at Patrician Presentation Secondary School from 7pm to 8.30pm on Wednesday evenings starting on February 15 and continuing to March 14. Fethard and Killusty Community Games
The closing date for all entries in the annual Area Art Competition is Wednesday, February 22. All entries from schools in Fethard and Killusty will be collected on that date.
If a child would like to enter the competition but is going to school in any of the adjacent areas ie Lisronagh, Moyglass, Cloneen, Drangan etc., they may submit their entry to the Community Games Office at Grove Road, Fethard, or arrange for collection elsewhere by contacting 086 8110768 before February 22, and it will be included with the pictures being submitted to the judging panel.
All Participants must reside in the parish of Fethard and Killusty regardless of where they attend school. Entries must be accompanied by fee of €2 and be on a community games theme and under the following age groups: 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16. The competitor must be under the age specified on July 31, 2012. Sporting themes such as boxing, showjumping etc., will not qualify, as they are not part of the Community Games programme.
Good news for all those who made the long journey to Silvermines last year, the 2012 County Finals will take place in Clonmel on Saturday March 10. Best of luck to all.

Fethard Athletic Club

Training continues on Thursday nights in the community field at the usual time of 7pm. Our numbers are steady but with the long evenings fast approaching training will transfer from a social event to some serious exercise. Championships are just around the corner so we are hoping that the quality and effort of our sessions will greatly improve, especially if road races are the object of your participation or if your desire is to run on the track, and seeing that it is Olympic year.
Membership is now due so don't be shy in coming forward.
We are running and walking on the road on Monday nights. We meet at Kerry Street car park at 7pm and do our activity under streetlights, which takes about 45 minutes. High visibility vests are essential but can be supplied if you are without one. There is no cost and everyone is welcome.
The training is all at your own pace so no need to worry that you will be left behind. Congratulations to Thomas Channon from Lisronagh who joined up with the club recently and won a bronze medal for the hurdles and a bronze medal for the 60 meter race at the Co. Tipperary indoor Championships in Nenagh on Sunday last. This was his first adventure into the sport after only four weeks training and we are delighted with his success, may it be the first of many.
Names are now being taken for our Easter dinner in McCarthy's Hotel.
South Tipperary Military History Society
South Tipperary Military History Society will hold our 1st Annual General Meeting on Tuesday March 22, at 8pm in Slievenamon Golf Club.
We are always looking for new members who have an interest in any aspect of Military History, be it Ancient to Modern, Irish or anywhere in the world. If you would like to come along, our membership fee is €25 annually and €2 per lecture, or you can pay €5 and just come along to the lectures without being a member.

Hunting News
From D'Arcy's Cross on Wednesday hounds did not find until they reached Davin's on the Tullamaine-Ballydoyle Road. Following some good cover hunting they crossed the road at the Rosegreen Junction. Running to the raceway they re-crossed the road hunting a left-handed circle to Long's big covert.
Moving across to Milltown they found again. Hunting by Moorstown Castle towards Mocklerstown they ran left-handed towards Coleman and to the big covert in Garraun. Pushing their fox around here they were away again left-handed towards Coleman Abbey and ran to the sheds on Milltown Hill.
The Tipps had a field of eighty at Moyglass in very inclement weather on Saturday. Foxes were very hard to find. A large area through Fogarty's Willows to Hannigan's and the Railway Line proved blank. Crossing the Fethard-Moyglass road from Mick O'Neill's. Through Teehan's to Moyglass School proved blank also as did Nico Quigley's, Murphy's and up to the new line at Sue Perry's. Finding eventually in O'Dwyers near Knockinglass they had a nice run to Graystown, left to Fogarty's, Knockforla, down through Lacey's and to ground behind the old tennis courts.
Great to see young Gavin Ryan out on Saturday following an injury received when hunting from Killenaule. A great rider to hounds Gavin, on his black pony, will take on obstacles that somewhat prove too much for senior riders. Grandson of the late Mattie Ryan, a great rider to hounds back in the Mrs Masters, Captain Williams' era. Gavin proved a great help to Derry on Saturday. On such young riders the future of hunting depends.
With the White Heathers
A fox found from move-off in fort at William Burke's was quickly caught. Finding again below the farm they hunted by the Anner's banks left handed back to Burke's they ran form here to Sandy Stokes' farm at Kilmore and right-handed towards Monroe. They swung back again towards Burke's but ran into some live electric fencing and were stopped. This was a good run of almost one hour during which hounds crossed four roads.
Drawing back towards Fort William they had a fox to ground. Fort William held two-and-a-half brace. Setting on one of these they crossed the road to Monroe Park running down to the railway line at Shanbally where they were stopped near Annsfort Bridge at 4pm. The Ballyluskey White Heather Harriers meet on Sunday next at Cloneen at 11am.
