Blessed on Sunday, November 12, 1950
The cross in the background was the original wooden cross first erected by the men of Killusty and blessed by an illustrious native of the Parish of Fethard, Most Rev. Dr. Patrick O’Donnell, Archbishop of Brisbane on Sunday, November 12, 1950.

Up along its steep, heather-clad slopes, a procession of clergy and people made its way against biting wind and showers of sleet-heavy rain. The inscription on the plaque reads: “This Cross commemorates Holy Year 1950 – the definition by Pope Pius XII of the Dogma of the Glorious Assumption of Our Blessed Lady (Nov 1, 1950). It was blessed on Sunday November 12, 1950 by Most Rev. P. K. O’Donnell D.D., Coadjutor Archbishop of Brisbane; Very Rev. John J. Canon Ryan, V.F., Fethard and Killusty, being P.P. A committee formed from the men of Killusty were responsible for promoting and carrying out the erection of the Cross.”

Those present at the ceremonies included Rev. Brothers Albert, Damien, Stephen, Fergus and Dominic, of the Patrician Brothers Fethard, as well as the members of the committee, Messrs Mulcahy, Dan Davis, Michael Byrne, James Corr, Patrick Davis, William Prout, Thomas Slattery, William Slattery, Thomas Keane, John Pollard, Pierce O’Donnell, John Aylward, Philip Shee and James Shee.

A decade of the Rosary was recited at the Cross and the proceedings terminated with the assembly singing ‘Faith of Our Fathers’. At nightfall the Cross was illuminated.
