Fethard Rugby Firsts record second victory in Munster Junior Division 2

The Fethard Rugby Firsts that have defeated old Christians and Cobh Pirates in the last two weeks
Fethard firsts having been newly promoted to Munster junior division 2 recorded their second win in as many weeks when they showed amazing heart to grind out a 10-8 win over Cobh Pirates in Cobh on Sunday last. From the drop off, Tomas Keavney gathered and ploughed into the big Cobh pack. Michael Gaynor and Mark Ronan were in support and Fethard were soon in the opposition 22, constant pressure from Fethard saw the home team knock on and the quick-thinking Tim Daly was on hand to touch down. Josef O’Connor landed the conversion.
The very mobile back row of Chris Large, Justin Carey and Andrew Phelan dominated open play and some great defence by the home side just held them out. Cobh did land a penalty on half time to leave it 7-3 to Fethard at half time.
Fethard introduced veteran prop John Stokes which stabilised the scrum and some great breaks by the Kavanagh brothers saw Fethard apply the pressure in the Cobh 22, eventually rewarded by an O’Connor penalty. The home side were not done yet and about 30 phases of pick and go eventually got the over in the corner, the conversion was well wide, so we had a heart stopping last 10, but this young Fethard side showed some heart with Joey Noonan, Oliver Pearson and William Morgan lodging attack after attack and when the final whistle did sound it was a superb win for this young Fethard side. Next up is Ballincollig in the league in Fethard on November 18, at 2.30pm. All support very welcome, the seconds play Waterford City away at 4.30pm next Saturday.

Water levels in River Clashawley

The Clashawley river bed completely dry at Watergate, Fethard on September 5, and remained that way until November 6 when the water eventually returned.
We are trying to get some background information about water levels in the River Clashawley in the past and would be grateful for any information, photos or old records which can through more light upon this subject, with particular respect to the disappearance of the river in summertime. We want to know if this is a new phenomenon, or an increasing one.
Any such information, no matter how anecdotal, will help Mieke Muylart, who is an ecologist carrying out some research on the natural heritage of the River Clashawley in Fethard under the auspices of a grant from the Local Authority Water and Communities Office. The grant was successfully allocated following an application by the Fethard Historical Society and will also fund a piece of work by Dave Pollock, archaeologist who is recording the built heritage along the river bank in the town.
The background to this work is that the Fethard Historical Society and other groups including anglers and the Business and Tourism Group have been very concerned by the OPW plans to dredge the river in the town and build concrete walls and clay embankments to alleviate the risk of future flooding. Surprisingly, the OPW have rated Fethard as having a high risk of future severe flooding. They have acknowledged however that their plans did not take account of a number of remedial measures which local groups have suggested, such as re opening a blocked arch in Watergate Bridge, and other solutions, but remain adamant that major engineering works are required in the town.
The Fethard Historical Society survey is aimed at carefully recording the heritage along the flood plain as a baseline study to highlight the richness of the flora, fauna and medieval structures in this area. We hope that it will help in our negotiations with the OPW in due course as flood prevention measures are finalised and lead to the most sensitive and appropriate design possible.
Please send any information about the river, especially about the issue of drying up in the summer months to this email address: alanomoore@gmail.com or phone: 086 1739707.
