Your support needed on Sunday next for Fethard's first County Hurling Final at U12 grade
Congratulations to Fethard U12 Hurling Team who won a dramatic county semifinal on Monday night last, August 22, in Cashel, beating a fancied Loughmore on a scoreline: 3-5 to 2-7. This was another unreal performance by our Fethard players, beating a highly fancied Loughmore with brilliant skill, spirit and determination.
All roads now lead to Holycross next Sunday for a first ever county hurling final at U12 grade. The game is fixed to start at 2pm against Rosegreen. So we ask you to come along and support our young hurling stars and we wish them the best of luck!

Great success at Community Games national finals
Fethard and Killusty Community Games U12 Girls Football team, representing Munster, celebrating with their bronze medals won at the National Festival held in Athlone Institute of Technology.
Congratulations to Fethard and Killusty Community Games U2 Girls Football team, representing Munster, who enjoyed a great weekend at the National Festival held in Athlone Institute of Technology, which resulted in winning bronze medals in a 3-17 to 0-1 victory over Leitrim.
In the team events, the draw determines the outcome of the medals. It was Munster (Fethard) v Leinster (Meath) in the first semifinal at 9am on Saturday, played in horrible weather conditions where Fethard failed to hold the challenge of an exceptionally strong team from Skryne, Co. Meath.

In the second semifinal between Connaught (Leitrim) v Ulster (Monaghan) the game resulted in victory for the girls from the North who were defeated by Meath in the final. Fethard were ‘on the ball’ from the start of their game against the Connaught champions and worthy winners of bronze medals. It was a long road for this team since last April winning both the south-final and county-final in Semple Stadium in June; the Munster final in University of Limerick in July, and finally giving such a fine display at the All Ireland final in Athlone. Every member of this team played their part in securing this honour and making history for the area. They are a credit to their mentors Micheál and Sandra Spillane along with Sean Og Ryan. They gave their parents and supporters hours of entertainment with many nail-biting moments along the way. We are so proud of them all.
Vice chairman Micheál Maher, Area Secretary Noreen Sheehy, and her daughter Hannah were among the many supporters who travelled to Athlone and reported that the girls were a joy to be associated with and a very enjoyable weekend was had by all, despite the weather.

Well done Fethard U12s, after a great victory against Ballingarry on Tuesday last, August 16, in Clonmel Sports Field that finished on a score line, 1-7 to 0-4. ‘Rising Stars’ harp concert this Saturday night in Fethard’s medieval church
Harpist Gloria Birardi, the senior member of the ‘rising stars’ group that will perform in Fethard on Saturday night
Holy Trinity Church, Fethard will come alive with the sound of music next Saturday night, the sound of harp music to be precise. Four very talented young musicians will perform in the atmospheric medieval church situated just off the Main Street in Fethard. The Fethard Historical Society is hosting this event as part of Heritage Week 2016 and so far there has been a great response among music lovers both locally and further afield.
All four young women, Gloria Birardi, Lucy, Rachel Duffy and Emer Ní Scolaí are currently studying at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin. Gloria, the senior member of the group, hails originally from Italy, came to study harp Geraldine O’Doherty in the RIAM and loved Ireland so much she has stayed here ever since. Gloria has played with many orchestras in Italy as well as our own RTE NSO, the RTE Chamber Orchestra, Clare Memory Orchestra, Hibernian Orchestra and SinfoNua. She currently teaches harp at the Kilternan School of Music, Dublin.
The three other girls study under Aine Ní Dhubhghaill, RIAM, and all have achieved outstanding success in their chosen field. Rachel has a First Class Honours degree in Music education from Trinity College and RIAM. She won the O’Carolan Cup at this year’s Feis Ceoil and has performed in numerous venues and at various festivals throughout Ireland including the Urban Fleadh and Trad Ash.
Sixteen-year-old Lucy is currently the recipient of the ESB Feis Ceoil, An Chruit (A) award. As a member of Craobh Phiaras Uí Ghréagáin she participates in the Fleadh Ceoil and was Leinster Champion 2014/15. Lucy has a passion for the Irish language and is a student at Coláiste Íosagáin.
Emer is the youngest member of the group at just twelve years old. In 2014 Emer won the U12 Feis Ceoil and the U12 All Ireland at Fleadh Cheoil. In 2015 Emer won the Leinster Fleadh and was placed third in the U12 All Ireland Slow Air competition. That same year she won the U12 O’Carolan Harp Competition. In 2016 Emer was awarded a scholarship at the RIAM and in the same year won the An Chruit (B) Feis Ceoil as well as the Dublin Fleadh in U12 Harp and Harp Slow Air Competitions.
Emer is no stranger to traditional Irish music and takes much of her inspiration from her extended family in particular her grandfather the distinguished Sean-nós singer and flute player Séamus MacMathúna.
We are delighted to welcome these four accomplished harpists to Holy Trinity next Saturday where they will perform, individually and collectively, a wonderful programme of classical and traditional Irish music.
The Fethard Historical Society enjoys great support from local businesses and this year we welcome RibWorld, Fethard, as a new sponsor and we are most grateful for their generous support for this event.
The evening begins with a cheese and wine reception at 8 pm. Admission is €5. Children are free. Tickets are available at the door or may be pre-booked at 087 9009722.
