Local schools take Fethard tour

Pupils from Lisronagh National School, with their teacher Mrs Carmel Armstrong, photographed with guide Terry Cunningham at the grave of Sir Henry Kellett, officer in the Royal Navy, oceanographer, Arctic explorer; born on November 2, 1806 at Clonacody, Fethard, and buried (above) in the grounds of Holy Trinity Church of Ireland. The group were on a tour of Fethard.
Vice Admiral Henry Kellett of Clonacody House was a very able officer in the British navy in the mid 1800s. His story lives on - especially in the USA and Canada - as he explored the frozen lands and seas of northern Canada and then the timbers of his ‘abandoned’ ship ‘The Resolute’ were used to make ‘The Resolute Desk’ that Barack Obama sits at in The Oval Office’ in the White House.
Fethard Historical Society arranged that the senior pupils from seven local Primary Schools could visit Fethard and take a guided historical tour of the medieval walled town during the month of June. The seven schools chosen were; Lisronagh, Moyglass, Cloneen, Killusty, Killurney, Drangan and Holy Trinity in Fethard. This project was assisted and encouraged by the Heritage Council within their Irish Walled Town Network initiative and it was a great opportunity for local children to get to know and understand their local area.
The guide for the children’s visits was Terry Cunningham, chairperson of the Historical Society and proprietor of ‘Backs To The Wall Tours’, a tourism guiding service for the Fethard and Slievenamon area.
The children learned how the ‘grain growing’ Anglo-Normans came and built the town of Fethard in the cattle grazing lands of the Gaelic Irish families around the year 1200AD. The extraordinary thing is that the town that was laid out and built in 1200 is still very recognisable today and the view over the south battlements of the town wall is very much as it was at that time.
The children learned of all the other ‘big stories’ of Fethard, which in many ways is the history of Ireland in general: The Plague and Black Death of the 1300s, the Reformation and Cromwellian Plantations of the 1500 and 1600s, the relaxation of the Penal laws and the return of the Augustinians to their Abbey in the early 1800s and the list goes on.
It is very true to say about Fethard that ‘the past is still present’ and it is wonderful that the schoolchildren of the area can actually ‘see history before their very eyes’ and better understand why things are the way we now see them.

U14 Munster Finalists – one of the best games witnessed

Fethard and Killusty U14 Girls football team, winners of silver medals at the Community Games Munster Finals for the third successive year. Back L to R: Sophie Delaney, Rachel Prout, Caoimhe O’Meara, Mark Prout (team manager), Hannah Dolan, Laura Kiely, Kaylin O’Donnell, Michael England (NEAC Delegate Tipperary Community Games), Ava Ward, Annette Connolly (team manager). Front L to R: Carrie Davey, Leah Coen, Ciara Connolly, Ashley Bradshaw, Alison Connolly and Nell Spillane.
There is great credit due to this great young Fethard U14 ladies football team and their mentors who put on a fantastic performance in the Community Games Munster Finals held in UL on Saturday last.
The Fethard team dominated in their semifinal against Limerick representatives, Bruff, winning by 3-11 to 0-6. Nell Spillane suffered an injury and fractured her arm in the final quarter of this game while going for a high ball. Hannah Dolan was also the victim of a very high tackle but recovered.
The girls then opposed Killorglin, Co. Kerry, in the final which was a spectacular game. It was described by a seasoned GAA follower as, “one of the best games ever witnessed.” The Kerry team was very strong and overall bigger than the Fethard/Killusty side who did not give an inch. The players answered every call and gave their best but unfortunately Kerry were ahead on the scoreboard at the final whistle. We are so proud of our girls who gave their coaches, parents and supporters hours of entertainment during the last few months.
The team were also unlucky to be without Lucy Spillane who was playing in the U14 All Ireland Final for Tipperary against Donegal, which resulted in a drew 5-7 to 3-13, so another day out to be slotted into Lucy’s busy schedule. Fethard also missed Ava Hickey who is recovering from an injury and Ellie Devaney who was not available. Wishing Nell a speedy recovery and a big ‘thank you’ to Micheál, Annette, Mark and Martin for all their assistance. Thanks also to Imelda Ryan for taking care of the Camogie and to Sean Kiely, Willie Morrissey and Sean Og Ryan for their help with the U10 Football and U11 Hurling teams.
Fethard had to withdraw their spike ball teams as the girls consisted of some of the football players and the boys were away on the day. The girls’ final was won by Limerick and boys by Kerry.

On the podium receiving their medals at the Community Games County Athletic Finals in Templemore are L to R: Noah O'Flynn (Fethard), Oran Gahan (Drangan) and Matthew Ryan (Ballina).

Gardai information afternoon with young students

Holy Trinity National School pupils photographed on their information day with members of the Gardai at Fethard Ballroom
On Friday, June 19, Holy Trinity National School 5th and 6th class pupils were invited to Fethard Ballroom for a very interesting and informative afternoon with the Gardai. The Gardai demonstrated all aspects of policing including the equipment they use. Pupils got the opportunity to see how a breathalyser machine and speed gun operate, and to try it out for themselves. The children were delighted to get the opportunity to sit in the patrol car and to sound the siren. They were also shown a few of the Gardaí’s essential items like handcuffs, batons and pepper spray.
Next we heard all about the Garda Dog Unit's duties. It was very interesting to hear all about these amazing and intelligent dogs, their trainers and the important work that they do to keep us all safe from harm. We even got to meet one of these fantastic dogs and see him working to protect his owner!
Finally we took part in a discussion about cyber bullying and the dangers of social media. The children listened attentively, took part in activities to demonstrate the dangers of being online and asked very pertinent questions. All involved thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and found it most interesting.
Silage Extravaganza and Family Day at Moyglass

Organisers preparing the groundwork for the forthcoming Moyglass 'Silage Extravaganza' on Sunday, July 26.
Coolmoyne and Moyglass Vintage Club are hosting a silage extravaganza and family day on Sunday, July 26, on Joe Trehy’s farm at Mobarnane, Moyglass. This promises to be the biggest working event in Ireland for 2015 and entries have been received from all over Ireland and the U.K. The local club members are joined by experienced silage operators from surrounding clubs and counties. Club members met like-minded silage and vintage enthusiasts a few years ago and the idea of holding a large event was discussed and two trial runs were held last year. The venue is ideal as it is only 10K from the M8. There are over 100 entries for the silage cutting and it will be a sight to behold when all of these kick into gear on one site. We are creating a record for double chop harvesters and Lee trailers. One entrant is driving his tractor from the north of Ireland and the boys from the west are travelling in convoy to The Horse and Jockey.
Our tractor run will take place on Saturday, July 25, when we will meet the contingent from the west at The Jockey and escort them back to Moyglass. We want to emphasise that the main events are really part of a family day out. There will be a static display of vintage tractors, cars, oil engines and implements etc. an old fashioned threshing, butter making, a lady blacksmith, trade stands and auto jumblers will add to the enjoyment for the public. Of course we cannot forget the children and these will be catered for with bouncy castles, slides, swinging boats, train rides, amusement arcades, ice cream vans and shop etc. Food will be available all day. The Dog Show is sponsored by Moyglass Kennels, so it’s time to get grooming and give your pets a day out also. Neighbours Sean and Ann O’Dea are very kindly providing parking facilities.

The event will commence at 11am with cutting for single chops, precision chops, wagons and self propelled dating from the sixties to the eighties. Paddy Lee of Lee Trailer fame will officially open the extravaganza at 2pm followed by the double chop record challenge and the Lee trailer record challenge.
Eamonn O’ Dwyer of Tipp F.M launched the event when an episode of Down Your Way was recorded at the Village Inn Moyglass on June 13. This was a memorable night of trad music, interviews and nostalgia. The Pheasant Pluckers were joined by a host of singers and musicians. Eamonn will return to record another episode on site on Sunday, July 26. And the Pheasant Pluckers are returning to Ned Kelly’s on Saturday, July 25. Irish TV are sending a film crew to record the event, which will be aired on channel 191. A host of journalists from Ireland and Peter Love from England are covering the event. South Tipperary Hospice are the charity who will receive the proceeds from the event and what a worthy cause. Admission is very reasonable at €5 and children under 12 are free. So whether you are a silage enthusiast or looking for a good family day out head for Moyglass on Sunday, July 26, and become part of this unique event and also support a most notable charity.
