'Sadies' grocery shop recently opened in Burke Street, Fethard.

Congratulations to proprietor Michael Duffy and manager Ray Doheny who have opened a new grocery shop ‘Sadies’ in Burke Street. The shop was named after Michael’s mother Sara ‘Sadie’ Duffy, originally from Fermanagh.  Michael, a well-known jockey and trainer, purchased the shop previously called ‘Annies’.

Michael has now leased the shop to Ray Doheny, who has years of experience in the grocery trade. Ray is extremely grateful for the encouragement and custom he has already received from locals. He intends to continue the shop’s long tradition by offering a friendly service in familiar surroundings. His younger customers have already affectionately called it the ‘sweet shop’. Opening hours are: Mondays to Fridays from 7am to 7pm; and Saturdays from 7am to 6pm. The shop will remain closed on Sundays for the present and a delivery service is also planned for the near future.

'Sadies' Grocery Shop , Burke Street, Fethard

The shop dates back to the 1900s
The premises in Burke Street, Fethard, that we refer to in this article is recorded in the Primary Valuation of Tenements, also known as Griffith's Valuation, carried out by Richard Griffith between 1848 and 1864. The premises in Moor-Street (as it was called at that time) in the Parish of Fethard is referenced as No 28, house and yard; occupied by a James Dwyer with the name of the 'Immediate Lessors' being James Connell.

Ellen Doherty, from Donohill, came to Fethard in the early 1890s to work as a bookkeeper for Patrick Coffey at his general merchant's shop on Main Street, Fethard, where he sold plain and fancy bakery goods; meal, flour and bran; home-cured bacon and hams. While in Fethard she met and fell in love with John O’Grady who worked as a railway porter (either in Fethard, Farranaleen or Laffansbridge).

Ellen and John later married on July 15, 1895 (registered in Tipperary parish) and in the following year, 1896, were parents to twin sisters, May (Mary) and Nellie (Ellen). Not long afterwards, they both set up in business in Moor Street (Burke Street), which was around the time their youngest daughter Lizzie was born on February 17, 1900.  This is the first reference of a business being run at this premises – a business that continues to the present day (2021).

John and Ellen O’Grady ran a grocery and provision store and sold the best Waterford and Limerick hams, bacon, pig’s-head, steaks and sausages; and they were also an agent for Lipton’s Tea.  In the 1950s the shop was run by her two daughters, May and Nellie O’Grady, neither of whom married. The shop was a thriving business at that time and always renowned for a late game of cards with neighbours and visitors. The house also provided long-term accommodation for people who came to work in Fethard.  Their younger sister Lizzie married and moved to Clonmel where they ran a Butcher’s Shop at Irishtown.

Nellie died on May 14, 1970 at the age of 73, and her twin sister May died on January 3, 1982, at the age of 85. In the following month, February 1982, the shop reopened after a brief closure, by new owners Bernadette (née Kenny) and Peter McManus who moved back to Fethard from South Africa. Bernadette and Peter continued their McManus Grocery business up to 2017, when they retired and sold the shop as a going concern to Anthea and Michael Hames, who opened and changed the name to ‘Annies’. The shop closed in March 2020, due to the first Covid-19 restrictions in March 2020. and remained closed until it was sold and bought in January 2021, by Michael Duffy, a well-known local jockey and trainer.

Michael leased the shop to Ray Doheny, who has years of experience in the grocery trade. Ray intends to continue the shop’s long tradition by offering a friendly service in familiar surroundings. His younger customers have already affectionately called it the ‘sweet shop’. Opening hours are: Mondays to Fridays from 7am to 7pm; and Saturdays from 7am to 6pm. The shop will remain closed on Sundays for the present and a delivery service is planned for the future.

(Some of the above earlier information was supplied by the late Michael O’Donnell, Kilnockin and Owning, when he quoted his father, Willie O’Donnell’s memories in his ‘Descriptions of Fethard’ article written in the 1980s.)
