Luke Coen, who is studying Equine Business at Maynooth University, had his first start in 2018 as a senior international in a 39-runner class where he finished third with 'Stroke Of Genius' as an eight-year-old gelding.
The 2019 GAIN Under 21 Young Rider six-member squad announced to compete in the Netherlands is as follows: Ella Boyle – 'Catriona'; Luke Coen – 'Stroke of Genius'; Anna Kelly – 'Something Special'; Christine O’Donnell – 'Blessington Prince Royal'; Robyn McCluskey – 'Rum Jumbie'; and Megan Telford-Kelly – 'Mr Chocolate'. Sue Shortt, Horse Sport Ireland Young Rider Eventing Team Manager said: “We are in the fortunate position to have a strong squad of talented horses and riders in the Young Rider Programme this year. The squad we have selected, I believe, are best positioned for success at the European Championships. The riders have demonstrated a high level of commitment to the High Performance Programme which has been a significant factor in the development of the squad during the season. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in the riders’ support structures, and also to Heike Holstein (dressage) and Gerry Flynn (show jumping) for their expertise.”
Luke, aged 19, has a life-long love for horses and really appreciates the support he received from his family, friends and local businesses, that has helped in no small way to achieve his dreams career with horses and without whose help it might not have been possible. We wish Luke the very best, along with his team members, at Young Rider European Championships in the Netherlands and have no doubt that we'll be hearing a lot more from this talented rider.

The Killusty Pony Show committee organised a wonderful, vintage style show on Saturday, July 6, as they celebrated the 57th Show, in the idyllic location, at the foot of Slievenamon. The entries were magnificent with over 250 ponies on the day, which was a credit to all the organisers of the show. Many newcomers from all over the country coming to the show to experience success at Killusty. The weather was extremely kind to them as the rain stayed away until the show was over. The committee were delighted to have new qualifiers for their show this year for Barnadown and Raheen-Na-Gun, and this attracted competitors to their young stock classes and Welsh Pony classes.

Also, this year the committee invested time and effort to preparing ring 5, and it proved worthwhile as competitors travelled from all over Ireland to try out the course. The course provided competitors with the opportunity to prepare prior to attending the big shows of the summer, including the Dublin Horse Show. This year they invested in a horse shoe, similar to the one seen in the RDS and it proved very attractive to all competitors. As always the dog show was very popular with the children, which was kindly sponsored by Iain Meagher of Daybreak Fethard, and judged by Mr Mike and Mrs Tanya Westgate, Ballynonty.

Photographed at Killusty Pony Show were L to R: Catherine Kearney, Christy Williams, Una Kiernan and Damien Byrne.
Thanks to all our sponsors, which without them Killusty would not be the success it is today and we really appreciate their continued support. Thanks to all the judges and stewards for their great work in all the rings throughout the field. Thanks to those who did the catering, everyone really enjoyed themselves and the food was superb. Thank you to everyone who helped with the parking and the erecting of the rings and marques during the week. A special thanks to the O’Flaherty family who provided refrigeration on the day for the food. Thanks to John Hennessy M.V.B. for being on duty for the day. The ‘Mentor of the Month’ award for June was won by Ann Slattery Coen, originally from Killenaule. Speaking at the presentation, Philip Butler, said that this month’s mentor award was somewhat different as it acknowledges the incredible background work that parents do in the coaching, encouraging and the usual never-ending travelling and collecting from events. Philip went on to say, that there were three young Coen boys nominated for the overall June Award, and this reflects highly on hard work and aspirations of their parents. Ann was picked as a representative ‘Coen’ parent to receive the award and ‘tipping’ the choice in her favour, was the fact she is originally from Killenaule – as is the proprietor!
