'Republic of Shame'— online event Thursday, April 22

The religious-run institutions in Ireland might seem like a thing of the past but thousands of people are still searching for answers and searching for each other. Sean Ross Abbey in Roscrea was one of the biggest institutions in the country and women from Tipperary were also sent to different institutions across Ireland. As the Commission of Investigation into Mother and Baby Homes released its controversial final report this year, there has been a surge in support for survivors to have access to their records and the right to know their identity. The Source will hold a special online event hosted by 'Republic of Shame' author Caelainn Hogan, opening up a conversation and bringing together intergenerational survivors of these institutions who will share readings, poetry and their own experiences.

This event is a webinar and registration is required in advance: Please go to registration page by CLICKING HERE

Guests:

Colleen Anderson was born in Sean Ross Abbey and was one of hundreds of children sent from the institution to America for adoption. She now lives in Ireland and will speak about her experience visiting Roscrea for the first time while trying to access information about her identity.

Terri Harrison is a mother who went to England when she was pregnant in the hopes of keeping her child but was forcibly brought back by the Crusade of Rescue and sent to institutions in both Cork and Dublin. She is a musician and the director of the Christine Buckley Centre.

Jess Kavanagh is a singer and writer from Dublin who has performed internationally with Hozier and The Waterboys. She has performed spoken word poetry about her mother's adoption and written about her experience as a mixed-race Irish woman.

Noelle Brown is an actor, writer and activist who was adopted from Bessborough mother and baby home institution in Cork, run by the same religious order that ran Sean Ross Abbey. Her play Postscript explores her experience attempting to trace her mother.

Caelainn Hogan is a journalist from Dublin whose book 'Republic of Shame' investigates the history and ongoing legacy of Ireland's religious-run institutions. She has reported for The New York Times, National Geographic, The Guardian, and The Washington Post.

The webinar, presented on Zoom, starts at 8pm on Thursday, April 22, and is open to the public. Registration is required in advance. For further information and registration link click: The Source Arts Centre Thurles

Information required
I wonder if you or any of your readers may be able to help or advise . I am trying to find any information or Birth Certificate of my Great Grandfather William Ryan . All I know is he was born in Fethard in 1873 and died in Liverpool in 1942 . He married Mary Cain.

I’ve been told they may have had a stud farm but not 100 percent sure. I know Ryan is a popular name and I may be asking to much, but hopefully, someone may be able to help.Funnily enough I mentioned to an Irish girl in Spain several years ago about my search and Fethard. She asked if it was a Ryan I was looking for, as she had a friend there who looked like me! Unfortunately I lost her details!
Thank you so much, Katharine Kearnes EMAIL KATHARINE

National Heritage Week 2021
National Heritage Week 2021 The Heritage Council is delighted to announce that National Heritage Week 2021 will take place from Saturday, August 14 to Sunday, August 22, 2021.

Last year, in response to public health guidelines relating to COVID-19, National Heritage Week moved away from events only, and invited heritage enthusiastic to create projects that could be shared online. Project organisers met this challenge with great innovation and creativity, producing over 800 heritage projects. You can search the full collection of projects here.

For National Heritage Week 2021, the Heritage Council is once again inviting individuals, communities and organisations to develop heritage projects. This year is all about opening the door to heritage and getting as many people to enjoy heritage as possible: heritage newcomers, who have not engaged with National Heritage Week before; groups or individuals who may not traditionally feel included in local heritage; and heritage enthusiasts of all ages. Completed heritage projects can be shared via the National Heritage Week website from Wednesday, June 16, to Monday, August 30.

For more information on National Heritage Week 2021 and for some things to consider when planning your project, check out the National Heritage Week Blog.
